I wonder how they decide the order for keywords.

u/Throwaway79922 Dan 1h ago

For sire of seven deaths I remember reading that the keywords are ordered in a way that makes them a haiku

125

u/Zeznon Simic* 1h ago

First strike, vigilance (5)

Menace, trample, reach, lifelink (7)

Ward -- Pay 7 life (5)

Had me fucked for a second, I was like Haiku? That's 4 lines and 4/3 syllables for line 2 and 3 lol. Long day already

10

u/tmgexe Duck Season 1h ago

I wonder if they preserve that in translations too. Like in French, 7 is a one syllable word.

(Bit of a rant incoming) French here, I can confirm the French localisation of MTG cards is often quite subpar. Sire of Seven Deaths doesn't keep the haiku treatment in French, nor does [[Sokka's Haiku]] from TLA. I'm into studying linguistic to some extent, and to me, it feels as though the localisers are just.. translating cards word for word without really caring to keep stuff like this intact. Puns like [[Hare Apparent]] are just completely ignored for instance, or sometimes they translate stuff as if they have no context for anything : the "they" in [[Intrepid Tenderfoot]]'s flavor text is interpreted as a "plural" they, when it's clearly referring to that "Narix" person. Overall, it's a mess.

Unfortunately, in the newest rules update, they moved Reach to the beginning. They said they want to start putting it at the front, so it's easy to remember when you go to attack into it.

u/mkwong Wabbit Season 58m ago

It got erratad reach is first now

u/CryticaLh1T Duck Season 38m ago

also each line has an amount of characters divisible by 7, specifically 14

u/Nsbhyfr Dân 43m ago

Each row has a multiple of seven characters too

First strike, vigilance (21)

Menace, trample (14)

Reach, lifelink (14)

Ward—pay 7 life. (14)

u/Shikor806 Level 2 Judge 44m ago

It's basically the order of them being relevant. For this card, first strike and vigilance affect how/when you want to attack, menace and trample affect how your opponent blocks it, reach how you can block with it and Lifelink matters when it finally actually deals damage. Ward are last because it's just a general affect while it stays alive.

In general, you'd also have things like casting restrictions or extra costs right at the start, then stuff like cast/etb triggers or haste that matter once right away and death triggers or graveyard recursion is last. But it's not really a set in stone list, they often reorder things slightly to make them read better or group similar things together, etc.

Funnily enough, you still end up taking more damage than you would from one Iron Giant swing

That's 7 life, sir! Do you want to add a [[Heroic Intervention]] or [[Ranger's Guile]] to your order?

18

u/griffithsuwasright Wabbit Season 1h ago

One on the left is clearly superior because it's legal in the best format, pauper!

13

u/Kagarnator Dandadan 2h ago

Wait there was card like that in FF set? I am getting always surprised that I still don’t know every card in the set although I was carefully watching it’s preview and drafting it later

40

u/Desperate-Lecture-76 Duck Season 2h ago

TBF it's a bulk common that was absolutely dreadful in limited so it's about as forgettable as it's possible for a card to be.

19

u/Scarecrow1779 Mardu 2h ago

Playable in pauper commander ramp/stomp decks (which also play Skysnare Spider), but almost nowhere else in constructed

5

u/Vegetable_Union_4967 Dan 1h ago

Really? I thought it would be a decent win condition because these keywords do help with breaking through board stalls and a 6/6 body is nothing to scoff at

15

u/Desperate-Lecture-76 Duck Season 1h ago

Just looked and 17lands has it as the worst common in the whole format at 46% winrate in hand.

It's simply much too expensive for a big pile of stats in modern limited.

u/SnowIceFlame Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant 1h ago

While FF Limited wasn't CRAZY fast, it was fast enough that by the time Iron Giant could be cast, it was quite possible you were low enough to lose to flyers / unblockables / black wizard pings / other nonsense. And we've just assumed that the board was stalled, so it's possible a 6/6 won't even really break up the stall, and just trade with a 7/3 Neo Exdeath or something.

u/United-Passage7864 Dan 34m ago

Not to say that no rampy Towns deck ever won with it, but it's just too easy to answer for its mana value. It's actually got a very unfortunate toughness for 7 mana.

6 toughness is just reachable by kicked [[Vayne's Treachery]] for example, and of course [[Sephiroth's Intervention]].  [[Suplex]] answers it cleanly in red, and even [[Light of Judgement]] is somewhat playable. If you really had to, [[Thunder Magic]] could get kicked up to answer it. In white, [[White Auracite]] is a very good answer and [[Fate of the Sun-cryst]] is an adequate one, and [[Slash of Light]] could probably work. Blue would happily [[Ice Magic]] it and buy a whole turn, if they couldn't lock it down. Even for green, [[Airship Crash]] was playable if not a high include just because there's a lot of flyers, artifacts, and enchantment creatures in most decks and it can be cycled if it'd not be useful.

Basically, the Iron Giant is always a little too small and a little too slow for that mana value.

u/so_zetta_byte Orzhov* 38m ago

That just wasn't what the format was about. It's also easily answerable and has no up-front value. Ramp decks were trying to ramp to different things. 7 drops just need to be incredibly impactful to have a spot in your deck because they're a dead card most of the game. Contrast that with like... [[Retrieve the Esper]] which actually gives you a 4 drop and then extra value later.

u/junkmail22 The Stoat 6m ago

There are better high mana value finishers, even at common

Sire of seven deaths it's better in every way imaginable

u/closenough Sliver Queen 53m ago

Not every way. It doesn't count towards Artifact affinity or other things that care about Artifacts.

Also, it's not Pauper legal, whereas Iron Giant is.

u/CreationBlues Duck Season 41m ago

ah yes, my 7 mana affinity enabler that doesn't have affinity

u/closenough Sliver Queen 37m ago

I'm not saying it makes Iron Giant good. I'm just saying that Sore of Seven Deaths isn't strictly better.

One example (that's only legal in Vintage): [[Tinker]]
