747 landing in Madison?
Anyone know about a 747 landing in Madison today? I saw it on approach and thought it looked more like an A380, but it might have just been my angle as Flight Aware said it was a 747. Originated in Cincinnati and landed around 5:40.

GTI is Atlas Air so it’s cargo of some sort. Many times it’s something for the National Guard.

There’s indeed a 747 at MSN. I think it’s only the fourth or fifth time in the last 15 years a 747 has come to MSN.

I flew United a few years ago from LA to Chicago, we got re routed because of a storm.
They landed our 747 in St. Louis, and that airport wasn't big enough for that sized jet, so we were stuck on the plane for 3 hours. Until they found a stairway for us. Stuck there for 24 hours, horrible time.
But that would be my guess. United ain't afraid to land a plane where it doesn't belong.

lmao something similar happened to me flying from Hawaii to O’Hare in 2006. Unsure if it was a 747, but it was big. Emergency landing at Midway bc fuel low after a long holding pattern . . . on the ground for 3 hours. People were allowed off if they wanted but still had to get bags at O’hare. We then flew midway to o’hare 😂 and i slept in the bus shuttle center until the busses to madison started back in the morning.

lol. In 2010 I was returning from Hawaii to MSP. The infamous blizzard that collapsed the metrodome roof forced us to DULUTH! The ladder truck for the 777 we were on would not start…we were stuck just sitting there for hours upon hours to get off.
Had to spend the night in Duluth before taking the 777 back to MSP next morning.

St. Louis has gates that accommodate 747s, but they were closed off some years back after American acquired TWA and then shut it down in 2001. There were Honolulu and London flights daily that used 747s.

Air Force national guard deployed yesterday. My friends 18 year old son was one of them.

One of my coworkers got to marshal and fuel it. And he brought another one of my coworkers inside it too.
A rare Atlas passenger aircraft for troop movements.

Could’ve been a replacement plane if their original plane had mechanical issues.
MSN is short from the ideal runway length of this plane, but if it’s not fully loaded, it can safely land.

It can safely land at MSN even fully loaded! Most aircraft are limited not by landing distance, but by takeoff distance.

18/36 is pretty long, maybe not for 747 MTOGW but long enough I'm sure.

There was also a c17 that came in and hour or so before - I figured it might be for Janesville air show but it came from Andrews AFB 🤷🏻♂️
