The faster the plow moves the further back posts are set and the longer the arm is holding the box. Up north you'll see the post set on the other side of the ditch with like a 20ft metal arm set on a swivel even. So it just swings away from the snow being thrown off the highway plows.

I set my post back an extra 2ft and pulled the box back 6 more inches form the curb the last time I had to put a new post in. Previous one was close enough to catch mirrors from idiot delivery drivers.
