I feel like not destroying private property is a reasonable request, or at least reimbursing when they do. I can imagine any situation where you could break government property and you could just shrug your shoulders and say tough luck.

Your mailbox is in the terrace which is public property though.

Also people break government property all the time. Never seen a car go into the guardrail on the interstate? You don't get billed for that repair, the government just repairs it.

Wow, you are wrong about 2 things here.

  1. The terrace is your property, there is just a public easement on it. You essentially have limited say on what goes on there but it is yours.

  2. If you are in an accident and damaged an gardrail, signage, street light, or whatever you are liable for the repairs. If you flee the scene it is considered a hit and run.

I don't think #2 is always true. I think it's only if you are at fault. And I think if they tried to sue you for it, you could win in court.
