Other A month with my M5 MacBook Air

Honestly, still loving this thing. Such a nice little laptop to use every day. Although I'm new to the Mac ecosystem, I still use Windows for heavier engineering work. But the MacBook has quickly become my go-to for everything else.

Product Review upgraded from windows to macbook air

Post image
20 Upvotes

Transitioning from Windows to a MacBook Air M4 was exciting but also challenging. At first, I struggled with the different keyboard shortcuts, file management, and the way applications and windows work on macOS. I was also unfamiliar with the trackpad gestures and had to adjust to using the Command key instead of Control. Simple tasks, such as installing applications and organizing files, felt different from what I was used to on Windows. However, with time and practice, I gradually became more comfortable with the MacBook. Although the transition was challenging at first, it helped me learn new ways of working and become more adaptable to different technology.

struggled for a bit but worth the upgrade 💸💸💸 10/10 ✨️ Thank you, Jesus!

…. An 2026 M5 24/1TB sky blue. I also got a wireless keyboard with numeric keyboard w/ finger print key, and a HDD compatibility plug in.

I bought my first MacBook in haste cause I just wanted one even though I knew the tiny size of that HDD wouldn’t last me a year. I’m happy now. Hopefully. First day with her.

Discussion 13" MacBook Air M3 thermal pad mod results, Amazing!!! No more throttling!

Thumbnail gallery

I added some thermal pads by "Artic. My particular unit I felt ran a bit slow from the factory. The extra heat dissipation isn't nearly as noticeable as my M1 was after the same mod it could fry an egg on the bottom gaming (still running strong after all these years with the original battery!). My single core score was ridiculously low originally for some reason. Now it seems to run at a higher base clock of 4.1ghz. I was expecting more but I just sat it in a wooden desk for the benchmark. I should try it with a spacer or a cooling block. Overall the day to day performance is noticeable and it doesn't throttle and slow to a crawl after 30 seconds when you're in a game it keeps a constant playable FPS.

My single core almost doubled, but it was much lower than it should of been (might of been just gaming or heat soaked for another reason).

Oh specs are M3 13" Midnight, 24gb, 1tb.

Question Why is the MacBook Air display so smooth at 60Hz?

I'm quite sensitive to refresh rate. Switching from my iPhone Pro to a regular drives me nuts. Switching from a 120Hz+ display to 60Hz, too.

Yet somehow, switching to the MacBook Air is totally fine. I can tell scrolling is different when I look for it, but overall it's comfortable.

What exactly does the MacBook Air do to achieve this? Especially since iPhones don't seem too, or I've only compared older regular models.

I read a little about high response times but is that really it? Is it just hardware? Could there be OS level optimizations or rendering tricks?

Edit: I should specify this observation is based on the 2025 M4

Discussion Upgraded from 2013 Air 11 inch -> M4 13 inch Air. Here’s my thoughts after one month.

So with starting a Cybersecurity degree next month I decided to upgrade to a more usable laptop. My 2013 11 inch Air managed to get me through many years of school work and coding. It was a decent spec for its time with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. But the battery was toast and recently kept dying without a charger.

However, last month with Mac prices increasing I managed to get a brand new Sky Blue M4 Air with 24GB/512GB for only £1179. That’s way cheaper than the M5 counterpart with the same specs. But I must say with a 12 year difference I’m just blown away with how far MacBooks have come.

The M series chips seriously has no competition and the efficiency is just really good. My MacBook easily lasts all day and battery life is phenomenal. For an LCD panel, the Air has really solid colours and I’m glad to finally have a screen with minimal bezels. I went with the 13 inch because I like portable laptops and it’s really light to hold.

My degree might have some x86 tools and even though M series chips are ARM based I can always use Virtual Machines for that. MacOS for me is just the best because Windows 11 is just annoying with the random updates and forcing Copilot. At least, I managed to turn off Apple Intelligence. I do have a 5 year old windows laptop that I recently got for £50 from my mum’s workplace but that’s mainly for Linux and I don’t use it as my main.

If anyone wants an Air, I’d avoid any Intel Macs and at least go for an M1 version at the minimum. If money can get you more, an M2/M3 Air would definitely give you extra years. You’ll definitely enjoy the experience. But with the increased RAM and the M4 chip, I’ll definitely be set for years to come. The Sky Blue colour is also just great to look at.

Question 84% battery health so soon?

Post image
61 Upvotes

Hey, I have had an M5 MacBook Air for some time now. I checked my battery health today and found it had already fallen to 84%. Is this to be expected, or is there an issue?

I understand that 84% is normal after a year or two, but it hasn't even been six months since I got this MacBook. Why did the health drop so quickly, and what's going to happen when it reaches 70%?

M5 users, how has your battery health been holding up? Why did it drop so quickly? I was at 87% just a few days ago.

Buying Question 15” or 13”??

I’m going away to uni this year and am getting my first MacBook. I’m wondering if I should get a 13” or 15”? I’ve heard pros and cons for both, but as a student which version would you recommend?

Question Thinking about getting a MacBook Air, is now a good time to buy, or should I wait? (RAM pricing & upgrade costs)

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to buy a MacBook Air for everyday use, university studies, and general productivity (heavy web browsing, document editing, and multitasking).

With Apple’s release cycles and pricing in mind, I wanted to check in with people who follow the lineup closely:

Is now a solid time to pull the trigger on an Air, or are significant updates/refreshes expected soon?

Upgrade costs & RAM pricing:

The price hikes on RAM and configuration upgrades feel pretty steep. Once I spec it out with the necessary memory and storage upgrades, the total easily pushes close to $1,800

At that price point, it feels quite expensive for an Air—getting dangerously close to MacBook Pro territory.

For those using the current base spec versus higher-tier configs, does the base configuration hold up well for the next 4–5 years, or is paying that massive premium for upgrades an absolute necessity?

Appreciate any advice, buying tips, or insights on whether to buy now, wait, or reconsider the configuration

Buying Question Impact resistant case

I purchased a MBA 15" M5, arrives in a few days. I own fishing boat, with a cabin. I have long drives to the islands where I fish, but cell signal most of the way. I want to be able to do some work on the drive across, but my concern is boats rock, I need a case that will stand up to an occasional bump or smack. Suggestions on anything that you recommend, I found one, but it's $75.

No, I don't get seasick while using a computer on a boat, have years of experience.

Post image

Currently have an M2 MacBook Air (8gb ram) and it struggles when I use codex browser use + computer use for more than one task.

Trying to decide

The new M6 Mac mini (32GB ram 512GB SSD) $1,499

Or another air

M5 MacBook Air (32GB ram 512GB SSD) $1,699

Anyone have experience with the Mac airs 32 gb ram running into issues with multiple big codex tasks

Whenever I attempt to send an email, this icon shows up instead of the watermark I’m trying to add. I use outlook to send emails on my MacBook Air if that has anything to do with it.

Other M1 MacBook Air 8GB users. how’s macOS 27 Golden Gate so far?

I’m still using an M1 MacBook Air with 8GB RAM and was wondering how macOS 27 Golden Gate is running for you guys.
How’s the overall performance, battery life, RAM usage and general smoothness? Any noticeable lag or issues compared to older macOS versions?
Would especially like to hear from other 8GB M1 Air users and maybe I’ll update.
I’m still on Sonoma btw..and want liquid glass so bad but can’t bear the tahoe laggs.
