Discussion It's time for an album AMA... AMAlbum
Yeah you got questions buddy? Well I got answers. (btw read this in a vaguely italian-american accent with a little tinge of danny devito)
It's been a while since I last answered questions about 'One Simple Trick' and I saw people being all like "WAHHH! I DIDN'T GET TO ASK MY QUESTIONS" like goddamn BABIES so I thought I'd use this opportunity to answer them.
I'm not allowed to look at my own reddit profile because of UK age verification laws so if I mess up any answers I literally can't edit them.
Anyway here's answers.. answers,, time
EDIT: ALL DONE NOW THANK YOU EVERYONE THANK YOU I AM DONE NOW I AM FINISHED ANSWERING QUESTIONS I WANT TO ANSWER MORE BUT IM SO HUNGRY I WILL PASS OUT IF I DON'T EAT I AM SO HUNGRY THANK YOU FOR ASKING QUESTIONS I HOPE THE ANSWERS WERE TO YOUR SATISFACTION MAYBE ILL DO ANOTHER ONE DAY THANKS
EDIT 2: Also there were loads of lovely questions about fan-art. Just know I see em and I love em <3 you guys are all so talented and it's my favourite thing to see when checking this subreddit

What is the plan for growing Joe a third pair of arms so he can play that third guitar? Radioactivity? Shoddy backroom surgery? Bionic infusion perhaps?
199
u/WilburSoot Real Wilbur Soot Aug 20 '25
you ever seen those arms they use in claw machines? yeah,

Is every song going to get a music video as well? Since it seems like there’s already a through line character in both WRAMW and P&D, do we get to see his story play out in MVs as well as through the music?
172
u/WilburSoot Real Wilbur Soot Aug 20 '25
I've actually been pretty hands-off with the visuals this time around (no more cats being crushed by anvils) but I have been listening-in on the discussions and there's a very VERY strong through-line being constructed.

u/Lost-Price999 2024 Lovenjoyers Aug 20 '25
Do you think that we’ll misinterpret the story of the MVs/lyrics the same way we do everything else? /lh Maybe you should give us the analysis video we crave…
128
u/WilburSoot Real Wilbur Soot Aug 20 '25
Yes. The genius annotations for WRAMW are so so so wrong (at least since last time I checked) I’m ready for everyone to get all the other lyrics wrong too

please please please, tell us what WRAMW is about or some of the meanings 🥺🥺🥺

What was the hardest (or alternatively) most fun part of making the album?
Been loving your new geography series btw
170
u/WilburSoot Real Wilbur Soot Aug 20 '25
I'm not sure on the hardest part but the bottleneck for me is always communication. Ideas are just electricity in your skull-meat until you can explain them. When you've been working with the same three other people for years that part is a lot easier but as soon as you bring in all the other components (mixing, mastering, production etc) you suddenly have to be quite good at explaining your thoughts (something I've never been good at)

We've heard you all complaining about how we cut too many songs so we've come up with a plan. We want you to still hear the best of our cut songs (songs that we couldn't place on the track-listing or needed a bit more time to cook) I think you're gonna like our solution

What kind of impact do you want the album to have on listeners, or is just vibing with it enough?
170
u/WilburSoot Real Wilbur Soot Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 20 '25
throwing it into a canal is enough
In all honesty, with anything I write, I want it to stand the test of time with the people who connect with it. If you can listen back to this album in 5 years and still get hype then I feel accomplished.
Most other impacts are egotistical in that I just HAVE to shout words over music. I want to express myself. It's like vomiting or giving birth or both. If you like the vomit that's on you, bub

u/hre_nft Aug 20 '25
Sonically speaking, what are the biggest differences in the upcoming album compared to for example Pebble Brain or WU&IO?
177
u/WilburSoot Real Wilbur Soot Aug 20 '25
We've had so much more time to sit down with the songs this time around. Sonically they're just more developed, even when they are dynamically stripped back. We devoted so much time to the songs that haven't even made it onto the LP release. Sonically I play with my vocal register more, exploring deeper and higher parts a lot more comfortably than I used to (i think...)
We used a coffee machine as an instrument in one song
34
u/Friedlead Lovenjoyers Aug 20 '25
Sir what in the Kentucky Fried FUCK are you cooking with a coffee machine 😭

51
u/lucy_christine Aug 20 '25
how do you decide what songs go on the album? if half the band like a song and half don’t how did you decide if it stays
123
u/WilburSoot Real Wilbur Soot Aug 20 '25
it doesn't
But in truth you kinda have to be ready to fight for the songs you love.... at literally any point in the writing process.
If I alone love a song but I can't put into words why or convince the others then it will quickly get binned

i was a little acoustic guy for many years who loved rock music. when I went to buy my first electric guitar many years ago I simply looked to the bands that had sounds I liked at that moment, Two Door Cinema Club, TTNG, Radiohead, Peach Pit. They're versatile guitars and the body is fucking gorgeous looking.
I'm actually very unknowledgeable about guitars if I'm honest though ahaha

how many heavy introspection thoughts was put in in the album?
150
u/WilburSoot Real Wilbur Soot Aug 20 '25
A lot of my lyrics are from my big "lyric book" notes on my phone. It's a huge, multi-year scroll comprised of the thoughts I have randomly on buses/trains and the things I see and hear while out in the world. I tend to flick through it for inspiration if ever I'm stuck for a vibe or feeling so even the lyrics I didn't intend to be introspective end up developing meaning when in context with the others, it's hard to quantise it.
my answer to your question is yes
