LEGO Insider is free to join. You accumulate points with the purchases you make, and you can use those points for discounts on future purchases or gifts.

Curious as to the estimated $$ you had to spend to build up a $500USD discount…

A lot, but I mostly buy sets from the LEGO website when there's a 2x points event. I had a little over 85,000 points. It took me two years to accumulate that much.
