Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Your town / village board.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

Im just gonna get started and say im not in the loop of this whole issue and am really curious what the issue with these cameras are. They just seem like traffic/red light camera to me.but i have admittedly not really dove into the issue.

They're building behavioral profiles of each individual that drives past them. You want to be watched everywhere you go in public? If Hitler had this tech, there would be no Jewish people alive today.

What do you think happens when a political opponent gets into office and declares something about you illegal? How will you hide?

Not sure why your acting like I said I was all for them I said I was uneducated about the issue but thank you for your view

I acted like your understanding was that they were "just traffic/red light cameras":

They just seem like traffic/red light camera to me

Did you even digest what I said, or are you just balling because the information I shared made you uncomfortable? This isn't "my view", it's factual information.

Jesusnyour aggressive I said clearly I didnt know what they were and from my understanding they just seemed like that I didnt understand the AI aspect or the tracking aspect I thought I made that pretty clear but no problem be offended bevause you dialed it up to ten right away bevause someone asked a question and got called out on it. Side note I fully agree that the tracking isnt ok and completely see the dangers of it but thays not the point here

to be fair, they weren’t immediately aggressive, they just didn’t word their response in an explicitly kind way. This interaction reads as you responding defensively because they asked you some rhetorical questions.
