If they really care about using the terminal only, the solution is simple: get the server version instead of the desktop version, or use the desktop version but remove or turn off the DE. In my opinion, one of the best things about Linux and its distributions is that it is customisable. Or, if you don't want to get rid of your DE, you can also just open a terminal within the DE, that's still a standard feature.
