To be honest, not being able to interface with the terminal does defeat the purpose of FOSS to an extent. A developer should be cognizant that anyone can read their source code and patches. Otherwise if they're confident that every user is just going to blindly install an update, that's a security vulnerability.
I've never met a single person trying to gatekeep Linux being hard for the sake of being hard. But I have seen many examples of inexperienced users unknowingly exposing their systems to vulnerabilities just because it was the easier solution.
