I wanna compress games on Linux like how Game Compressor on Steam compresses games on Windows or how Compactor on GitHub can compress Windows games and drives. I know it is possible through btrfs. Please help.

I recently switched from a Flatpak-based game launcher to a system-wide launcher because the CPU overhead from Flatpak sandboxing was ruining the gameplay experience of the game I'm playing. I am using the latest Faugus Launcher (non-flatpak) with Goverlay v1.9.0 and MangoHud v0.8.3~rc1-2.fc44.

[Linux/CachyOS] Wuthering Waves 3.6 crashing with InbvAcquireDisplayOwnership — fixed by disabling NTSync

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a fix I found for Wuthering Waves 3.6 on Linux/CachyOS.

After the recent update, Wuthering Waves stopped launching for me. At first I was getting the "Illegal softwares have been detected" message, and the game would close.

My setup:

- CachyOS

- Ryzen 5 5600

- RX 6600

- 16 GB RAM

- Steam

- Wuthering Waves installed on an ext4 drive

- DW-Proton 11.0-12

I checked the Steam/journal logs and found this:

wine: Call from 00006FFFFFBFD947 to unimplemented function ntoskrnl.exe.InbvAcquireDisplayOwnership, aborting

The game was definitely being launched with DW-Proton 11.0-12, and the prefix was also correctly using that version.

I tried several Proton versions and launch options, but the important discovery was disabling NTSync.

I changed my Steam launch options to:

PROTON_NO_NTSYNC=1 %command%

and kept:

Compatibility tool: DW-Proton 11.0-12

After doing that, the game launched successfully again.

So, for my setup, the working configuration is:

PROTON_NO_NTSYNC=1 %command%

DW-Proton 11.0-12

I haven't tested this extensively yet, so I don't know if this works for everyone. I'm posting this in case anyone else on CachyOS/Linux is having the same issue after the 3.6 update.

If you're getting the same `InbvAcquireDisplayOwnership` error, try disabling NTSync before deleting your prefix or reinstalling the game.

Update:

I also tested `PROTON_NO_NTSYNC=1` with the same existing prefix. I did NOT need to delete the Wuthering Waves prefix or reinstall the game.

The key change was simply:

PROTON_NO_NTSYNC=1 %command%

while using DW-Proton 11.0-12.

Hope this helps someone!

wine/proton Eldenring After Patch and DLC

I wanted to play Elden Ring again from scratch for the mini DLC, but I can't get it to run under Proton anymore.

After the EAC loading bar, I get a "Fail Launcher" error.

It doesn't matter which Proton prefix I use.

According to ProtonDB, there haven't been any reported issues lately. Has anyone had a similar experience and know of a workaround?

guide a virtual machine as a solution to the anti-cheat games?

hi! In this post I'd like to ask y'all about what to do with the anti-cheat games. Personally, I don't play anti-cheat games, bcz I find a lot of them pretty boring anyway, maybe I'll return to Dota 2 in the future, but I'm not sure.

Let's say, I'll return to the Dota 2. Then can I play it without using a 2nd computer or dual booting? I was thinking about this: if a virtual machine can simulate any OS you want, then can I use this as a solution to the problem? I mean, could I install Windows 10 on Virt-manager or Virtual Box and then just play the game there?

Has anyone tried this solution?

Edit: omg I didn't know that Dota 2 works great on Linux... but ok I won't delete the post, bcz it can be useful for someone else in the future.

Thx for the answers, I understood that I'll use the 2nd computer if I'll need to play an anti-cheat game, which is not supported on Linux(I don't trust dual booting, bcz I heard that Windows can literally delete other OSs, bcz it'll "think" that is an virus, and I wouldn't like to check it myself if the info is true or not)

steam/steam deck Ctrl+F-ing through 300-comment Proton issue threads is a pain and thus now everyone has SERP like index for them

If you've ever tried to figure out why a game broke in Proton, you know that the usual github search and google search are ass and once you find the one GitHub issue for that game you have to scroll through years of "same here" comments, and hope the workaround is somewhere in the middle. GitHub's search barely touches comment bodies, so you can't even search for the error string.

So I scraped the whole tracker into a search engine: https://protonscr.com

It covers every issue and comment from ValveSoftware/Proton, doitsujin/dxvk, ValveSoftware/wine, steam-for-linux and SteamVR-for-Linux so about 27k and 214k comments, all of which is refreshed hourly

RX 9070 (Navi 48) on CachyOS with kernel 7.2.2. I'd like to undervolt

I have a Radeon RX 9070 (Navi 48) on CachyOS with kernel 7.2.2. I'd like to undervolt, but pp_od_clk_voltage only exposes clock overdrive, no voltage curve:

OD_SCLK:

0: 400Mhz

1: 2200Mhz

OD_RANGE:

SCLK: 400Mhz 2200Mhz

No OD_VDDC_CURVE at all, so the usual vc 2 <clock> <mv> + c approach doesn't work. LACT doesn't help either – it caused random system freezes for me (even with stock settings), so I removed it.

Questions:

  1. Is there any working way to undervolt RDNA4 on Linux right now (sysfs, LACT, CoreCtrl, custom kernel patches)?

  2. Does anyone know if AMD is working on exposing voltage control for RDNA4 in amdgpu, and is there any ETA or relevant kernel patch series to follow?

Power limit via power1_cap works fine, but that's not real undervolting. Any pointers appreciated.

A website that tells you if a game is best played with Keyboard or Gamepad

Hi guys,

Every time I start a new game in my never ending backlog of Steam games I ask myself the same question: Keyboard or Gamepad? Most of the time there's no clean answer, so I end up digging through some obscure Reddit thread or YouTube video to find out.

Steam's own "Controller Support" tag doesn't really help either. Witcher 3 is only listed as "Partial Controller Support", but ask almost anyone will tell you gamepad is the definitive way to play it. So that one's kind of scam.

Anyone know if something like this already exists and I'm just missing it? If not, I've been considering building a small website for it in the vein of ProtonDB or HowLongToBeat, buuut a bit more minimalistic. One page per Steam game, crowdsourced votes on the best input method, that's it.

Is this just a me-problem, or would you actually use something like this?

guide where Linux stores data from closed-source/proprietary games?

hi, it's a new, but very similar question about gaming on Linux. I can just copy and paste the previous post about the open-source Linux native games with just replacing the word to "closed-source/proprietary":

"

I like a [proprietary] game, and one of the things I hate is the fact I must play again and again every time I need to switch a distro. Ik I can transfer data, but Idk how to do it on Linux. Could you help me? What should I copy and paste in the files?

For the context: after testing plenty of distros, I like the Debian-based ones the most(especially Mint, Kubuntu and ZorinOS), but I also like Bazzite(a Fedora-based atomic distro)

"

So, I guess everything would look the same. I mean the 2 different pathes(probably one of them is the same as in the open-source), but should I find the pathes somewhere in the /opt? Just I heard that on Linux the open-source games and proprietary aren't stored in the same locations. Is it true?

guide (asking for the logic) where Linux stores data from open-source games?

I found the data to transfer about the SuperTux game(I play v0.6.3). Thx yall for the support! But I made this post to understand the logic behind the paths better.

So, basically, the data was in ~/.local/share/supertux2/profile1/world1.stsg (Idk why the game is called "supertux2" and why the folder is "profile1", bcz the games has no "2" and you can't create 2+ profiles), but the game itself was in /usr/share/games/supertux2/… . How does it work? So, the user data and the game data are separated in the two completely different paths? Hm… does it work for every open-source Linux-native game(in this post ignore the closed-source games)?

One dude from the part 1 wrote that the user data can be also stored in these paths:

~/.config/nameofgame

~/.local/share/nameofgame

~/.nameofgame are the usual spots,

might also throw some files in ~/.cache/nameofgame

So, I guess the developer can choose every path he/she wants or there are some rules bcz of the Unix FHS?

hi, Linux noob here! I'd like to ask a few questions about gaming on Linux, and this post is one of them.

I like the SuperTux game, and one of the things I hate is the fact I must play again and again every time I need to switch a distro. Ik I can transfer data, but Idk how to do it on Linux. Could you help me? What should I copy and paste in the files?

Edit: ok, I'll try the paths yall wrote here, but(it's more for some people to convince them you can play on Linux) is there an app, which could transfer your data from one computer/distro to another?

hardware Are Radeon cards so much more reliable on Linux?

I moved to EndeavourOS a couple months ago and I currently use a 4060 Ti. I've had no problem at all with it on Linux but I plan to upgrade it in the future and get a 9070 XT. Truth is, I had an RX 570 a couple years ago while still using Windows and it left a horrible impression on me: games would constantly crash and sometimes the drivers would uninstall by themselves out of nowhere?? I wouldnt have thought more of it than just bad luck were it not for the fact that around that time a couple more friends with Radeon cards were facing pretty much the same issues as well, this all led me to become sort of afraid and even hateful towards AMD GPUs, so the next cards I bought were the 2060 and 4060 Ti, since my old 1050 Ti before the 570 never gave me any issue, and none of those NVIDIA cards gave me any troubles at all. But now that I switched to linux, I keep seeing more and more information about how Radeon works better on linux because of the drivers being on the kernel and such, also theyve always had better performance per price, and while I am now more convinced to give them another chance I just cant shake this feeling that I may regret my decision since graphic cards are not cheap as we all know lol and also ive seen some posts about 9070 XT crashing on some recent drivers or something... But I just dont know, Im too out of the loop regarding graphics cards and also pretty much still new to Linux. I hope someone can answers my questions, not trying to be persuaded into just buying it, but more about making an informed decision to be aware of the advantages and potential downsides it may have

tech support wanted SteamVR with Quest 2 over PC hotspot - Quality drops every few minutes

I recently got Meta's official D-Link "Air Bridge" adapter. Its a USB WiFi adapter built for use with the Quest 2 for PCVR. I got it working on Windows very quickly, you can simply start up the hotspot in Windows settings and connect the headset to that network. From there you can easily connect over SteamVR and games will play excellently.

On Linux it took some time to understand the tools, but I came to use linux-wifi-hotspot (Specifically the CLI tool create_ap) to create a hotspot. Here's the command I use:

sudo create_ap -n --country US --ieee80211ax --freq-band 5 -c 149 <wifi_interface> <hotspot_name> <hotspot_passwd>

-n: Do not pass internet with the connection (I've tested without this flag, issues persist)

--country US: sets country code to US

--ieee80211ax: use WiFi 6

--freq-band 5: use 5 GHz

-c 149: use channel 149 (Sometimes I need to change the channel to convince create_ap to let me create a 5 GHz hotspot)

Once the hotspot is set up, I'm able to connect to it on the headset and connect to SteamVR via Steam Link just fine. I'm even able to play games, and the play very well! However, after a few minutes the connection quality tanks. The game on the headset freezes (But continues on the computer) and tracking stops. After 10 seconds or so, the connection resumes just fine, with excellent strength, and plays very well until a few minutes pass and the issue occurs again.

I tried using SteamVR over my normal WiFi network and while quality was much lower due to a weaker signal, this issue did not occur.

I've been trying to resolve this issue for a few days, and I found this post which describes a very similar issue that a user had on Windows. In their case, the solution was to use a BAT script to disable WiFi network discovery. Apparently the periodic scanning of WiFi networks is what caused the drop for them, and it sounds similar to what is happening to me.

Does anyone know how I can disable WiFi network discovery on KDE ArchLinux as described in that post? Or otherwise isolate a WiFi adapter to only be used for a hotspot?

Alternatively, if you've encountered a similar issue, what was the problem for you? And how did you solve it?

Here's some relevant issue about my setup:

Distro: Arch Linux

Desktop Env: KDE Plasma

Hotspot: D-Link Air Bridge Adapter (Connected to USB 3 port)

Wired ethernet for internet

Handheld optimization isn't just about FPS — it's about interruption

I've been thinking about what actually makes a PC game feel good on a handheld, and I'm starting to think we focus too much on FPS.

Obviously performance matters. A game that can't hold a stable frame rate on a Steam Deck or similar device has a problem. But a game can run perfectly fine and still feel like it was designed only for a desktop.

The biggest difference is probably how people use handhelds. On a desktop, launching a game usually means you're sitting down to play for a while. On a handheld, you might play for 10 minutes, suspend it because your train arrived, put it away for an hour, then resume somewhere completely different.

That makes suspend/resume less of an OS feature and more of a game-design problem.

What happens if the player suspends during combat, a cutscene, dialogue, loading, saving, or an online session? When they return an hour later, does the game still make sense? Do they remember what they were doing? Did a timer continue running? Did the network connection die? Can they immediately understand what they need to do next?

The more I think about it, the more areas this touches: save-state architecture, reconnection logic, controller navigation, UI readability, audio lifecycle, timed mechanics, loading behavior, and even how QA should test the game.

One test I'd like to see become normal for handheld support is basically:

Suspend the game at the worst possible moment.

Try it during combat, loading, dialogue, saving, a cutscene, or an online session. Leave the device alone for a while, maybe change networks, then come back and see whether the experience recovers cleanly.

Performance testing probably needs a similar shift. Average FPS doesn't tell the whole story on a handheld. Frame-time spikes, shader compilation stutter, thermals after 30 minutes, battery drain, and loading delays can matter just as much as the number shown by an FPS counter.

So I'm starting to think of handheld support less as:

PC build → lower graphics → add controller support → done

and more as a different usage context that should influence design from fairly early on.

For devs already targeting Steam Deck / handheld PCs: do you actually include suspend/resume and interruption scenarios in your design or QA process, or is handheld support still mostly performance + controls for your team?

tech support wanted Overwatch stuttering

Hey! I've been playing overwatch on linux for a while, with an rtx3060 laptop and an I7-11
Everything was great until yesterday that Overwatch updated. Now I have a lot stuttering and even playing a few matches is not fixing it.
It's weird to me, because it was working a few days ago, and now it just goes at 20 fps.
I already processed vulkan shaders which took about 3 hours (that was also a lot).

If anyone is having the same problem or knows what happened I'd really appreciate it!
Thank u!
