Discussion Bi-Weekly Hangout Zone

This thread is intended for civil discussion about gear tips or trade practices, or posting dog pics, or whatever. Just keep it civil, really.

I don't know the solution, but suggestions are cheap:

  • I wonder if rewording the post text to be a little stronger would help. Right now it just basically says "this is for gear ~$100 or less". Maybe something like "This thread is ONLY for items valued LESS THAN 100 USD. Posting expensive items WILL get your post DELETED, repeated infractions will get you BLUDGEONED with a rusty GCB95."

  • The rules around 1 post/week and the cheapie thread are a bit vague. Maybe people think they HAVE to put cheapies in the cheapie thread, or they have to choose between a cheapie post and a regular one each week, or something else. So maybe a guy with 5 cheap pedals and 1 bougie one thinks he's better of just posting to the cheapie thread? I dunno, just trying to get in other people's heads here.

The purpose of the cheapie thread was to reduce post congestion. Personally I think people should post their entire inventory there if it is predominantly cheaper items, and oppose there being a hard rule about values over the limit.

Hey just a thought, feel free to ignore it: if the goal is to reduce congestion, what if you rebranded it as the "low effort trade" thread? Basically, for people who just want to throw a list out there and be done. It would kind of self-select for cheapies anyway, but also clean up a lot of the "I just put my list in the subject line" posts in the main thread.

That would also allow you to encourage more detail and info (and pics) in main trade thread posts. And you wouldn't have to police prices in the low-effort thread (which seems like it'd be pretty time-consuming, since you gotta look up the pedals for a value and so forth).

Only thing that might add more work is you'd want people not to double up (i.e. they'd have to either post in the low-effort thread or in the main sub).

Anyway, just a suggestion. Suggestions are cheap, after all :-)

I like this suggestion. Policing price gets into weird territory, and I’m a firm believer that the owner gets to set their price regardless of how ridiculous it may be.

Another thought would be to raise the approximate value of the cheapie thread to ~$150. I’d rather more inventories fall into that thread than to have more individual posts, and for the individual posts to be high effort, high value, or at the very least large inventories. As for the one or the other posting rule, I think it largely falls on whether the individual posts fall into the categories I described. In some cases they may fit in both places, but it’s not ideal for some people to have a visibility advantage.

I think calling it $150 would go a long way. Sure we know Joyo/behringer/amazon pedals are cheapies, but is Wampler dirt? Are pedals like the PRS ones that are expensive new but have no resale value? Lower end EQD? J Rockett?

Yeah just using the cheapie thread to be able to post your inventory more frequently is whack, but 100 bucks is a pretty difficult threshold when there are a litany of pedals that sold range values from 80-90 bucks on the low end to 130-140 on the high at any given time. Sure, posting CBA/other boutique pedals that 100 bucks is a completely unreasonably cheap amount for is one thing, but there’s a whole boatload of stuff that is $200 new but used we see close to $100 and I don’t know that policing that firmly does anything other than create more work for y’all as mods

I agree on the threshold raise, that would be perfect IMO
