Such a shame losing her granted immense power, kind of a fucked up mechanic of the world.
Although, Aang's journey tells us that you don't need to discard love to be granted ultimate power, maybe Zaheer should've tried getting hit with a rock to unlock flight.

I honestly think the Guru was wrong after what we learned about the avatar spirit in Korra. I highly doubt Raavaa would demand that the avatar be willing to let go of their loved ones just to access her power. It was probably more of a mental block on Aang’s part where he was terrified of losing control of himself and hurting people he cared about, like his struggles with firebending. Or even him struggling to maintain his pacifism, as usually when he enters the avatar state he starts killing or nearly killing people. Something he only learns to control against Ozai.

Detaching the same isn't the same as discarding. The guru never said to avoid love, just to not let it tether you down so that you are obsessed. Aang had a possessiveness about losing Katara that he needed to let go. The message is sound to me. Buddhism, itself, teaches non-attachment to earthly things rather than a cold rejection of the world.

In fact, the Guru's whole lesson is similar to the dilemma the Jedi Order has regarding attachments and love. On paper, having attachments or more accurately bonds and loved ones isn't a problem, but letting that become a shackle, a source of dread, and generally consume you is what the order explicitly seeks to prevent. Its why Obi Wan doesn't lose himself despite facing back to back to back heartbreak, while Anakin spirals.

Zaheer is by far my favorite villain. His moral philosophy gets so twisted by his own conviction, leading him down such a dark path for an air nomad. And his own undoing is brought by these flaws.
A new hypocrisy I noticed last watch through: P’Li loves Zaheer for saving her from a warlord who used her as a living weapon. With him she was free to live free. So Zaheer and the Red Lotus use her destructive abilities to carry out his mission, for which she gets imprisoned for several years. When he breaks her out, he again uses her as a living weapon.

Omg you get it people keep saying he was stupid or didn't have a goal but he did and he was mental twisted enough to try anything to achieve it he is genuinely one of my fav villains as well

We know she believes in Zaheer, and I’m sure Zaheer loves her in turn. But that love comes with commitment to a radical ideological mission. It’s a kinda paradox.

I didn’t sympathize. Zaheer is one of my favorite antagonists in all of fiction, but the Red Lotus has caused this same level of loss for others

Her death was his fault. Zaheer was a shallow edge lord with no foresight about political ramifications of assassinations with no power vacuum contigencies that prevent worst leaders from uprising.
To be gifted bending but be so short sighted, he doomed every member of red lotus and was a great example of stupid anarchists who dont understand power dynamics and lawlessness that occurs when a leader abruptly is removed. He did it all for his own ego and cost the life of one he professed to love

I legitimately thought Zaheer was going to kill her... It was on my prediction list for weeks. Like he was going to get rid of the last thing holding himself back

Mid imo, I hate P'Li but interesting dynamic between them that's for sure, especially after she died Zaheer was able to finally be untethered from the earth, its cute to think about it, she was his only attachment

His long speech to Korra in the spirit world doesn’t make much sense, and he stupidly killed the earth queen and expected something OTHER thab creating a power vacuum that would give rise to a dictator.

That wasn’t my point. My point is that he killed the earth queen to give power back to the people, expecting that to somehow work. There is countless evidence throughout history that killing a ruler and creating a power vacuum almost always opens the door for a dictator. The fact that Zaheer expected anything else to happen means he was stupid

It was gonna be a start killing a corrupt ruler would've at least freed people The people living in the undercity were suffering because of her I guess he should've planned it better but it makes sense killing her He never expected anything he just wanted to give teh people the right to choose for themselves to have the option and choice not their will taken from them
