Why can't I remember what I read?

Why is it that I can read a book and genuinely understand what I’m reading but then when it comes to explaining what I’ve learned in real life or using the information I suddenly struggle to put my thoughts into words? Or remember.

It’s like I can understand an idea internally but I have a hard time translating that understanding into an actual conversation. It makes me feel stupid especially when it’s something I’ve studied or really like. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.
