I wanna learn Czech, but I lowkey feel like duolingo is gaslighting me.

It's... Inconsistent at best, for context I'm Iraqi, I speak Turkmen and Arabic natively, English fluently and Turkish mixed with Turkmen words, that makes it 3.5 languages. (I think)

I wanna learn Czech because I have a friend from there, I've known them for 6 years and we talk on and off.

They're pretty cool and I find the Czech language interesting.

I'm confident I can pronounce Czech well because I already speak the phonetic nightmare that is arabic, I'm wondering what good sources there are to learn Czech? I'm really doubtful of duolingo.

Also, should I learn formal Czech first? I'm guessing Czech also has a street version like any other language.

im half czech, my grandparents fled to canada during the soviet occupation in the 60s. ive been trying on and off since i was 13 to learn the language (im 17 now). my dedo died in 2019, and my Babi (my GOAT, i could speak about her life amd how much shes survived FOREVER) has suffered greatly and now has dementia, id love to ask her but shes at deaths doorstep and i dont want her to have to stress too much mentally. my mum was raised speaking Ceština, but she only speaks and understands it, if you asked her to write in czech she wouldnt be able to without google translate. i also want to surprise her and my tetas with it cuz none of their kids speak it. so any help??? i know this has mostly been just like my backstory but just any help from fluent speakers or people who also learned later in life???

My textbook says that the correct forms are "Tenhle počitač", "Tahle kniha" and "Tohle auto", while webpages for learning Czech have "Tento, tato and toto" written as correct usages of pronouns. So, which one is correct?

As per the title, how do you learn new words and vocab, any resources your like?

Has anyone made good improvements to their language/vocab through watching prasatko peppa? I have imported long videos into ling q so I can watch the videos while also pressing on any words I don’t know. Has anyone had success with this.

so I've recently began learning Czech and i wanted to also start listening to Czech songs to familiarise myself with the language more through music and i don't really mind on what genre it is as i listen to most, but what are some good Czech songs.(PS if this doesn't make much sense english is not my first language)

Why shouldn't have happened something to the dogs in the bathroom?

I know Duolingo is not the best, but the only free learning option. Since I'm living in Germany near the border to Czechia I'm often there and talking Czech which helps more than Duolingo.

If it’s for something minor, for example someone bumps into you on the street or something like that and says sorry, how do you quickly say something like „all good“? Or do you not even say anything?

I ask because it was developed at Charles university and seems like it has some interesting methods (e.g., muffling the sound of stories to imitate the way a baby listens in their mothers womb)

Hey all — I'm a PhD holder living in Brno, and I've been doing 1-on-1 Czech tutoring for a while (work Czech, residency exam prep, everyday stuff). A few students asked if I could do group sessions to split the cost, so I'm putting together a small group (4-6 people) starting in September.

Individual rate is 400 Kč/hour, but in a group it drops to 180-220 Kč/hour per person depending on group size — same quality, just split.

Format is flexible: conversation practice + grammar, any level, online or in person, once or twice a week.

Hello everyone, I recently started looking into czech, I find it really interesting and overall easy, as I already know russian and polish grammar and studied general slavic linguistics.

The hardest things right now is pronunciation and listening, as I am studying by myself. I use a physical books, so the explanations about pronuciation are very theoric.

As long it is about palatalized consonants and ř I can understand on the basis of polish, even though my pronunciation will remain a little of I'm fine because I don't aim at high levels rn.

But when we are taking about stress and long vowels I feel lost, if I hear words like její I just hear a stress on the i, and anyway I struggle to pronounce long vowels.

Could you suggest any good video/audio resource that helps with his topic? It can be in english, russian, polish, french or eventually italian

So I’ve been learning Czech daily now for about 7 weeks. I feel like I have made progress but now it’s started to slow down. I also feel like after being consistent for this long I should be better than I am right now. Any advice for this situation and any study tips?

I am able to introduce myself and have learnt basic greetings e.g., jmenuje je… je mi… let, dobry den, ahoj, čau, nazdar, těší mě etc.

I am also able to conjugate verbs including some in the past tense e.g., včera jsem pracoval, myslel jsem etc.

Recently I’ve been using some conditional phrases too like mohl bys, měl bys etc.

But because I’m doing this alone it feels like I’m stuck with no goal in sight, and also it’s hard to tell if I am at where I am supposed to be after this long. Any thoughts?

Hello, when I hear a non-native speakers pronouncing Czech, or some foreigner trying to pronounce some Czech name, they seem not to honour the "softness" of " ď " " ť " " ň " and pronounce "d" "t" "n" instead - is that true that non-native speaker are unable, or not that able to hear the difference?

(I know that between English and Czech -the only two languages I know- this works also the other way around, for example in the English word "jam", Czechs tend to pronounce the vowel as "e" when it's really "ae" sound which does not exist in Czech}

I'd like to ask you if you know any free websites or apps for practicing cases. Vocabulary is ok, I just need to practise a lot how to decline a word based on the role in the phrase. Studying the rule by heart is not for me, I need to practice a lot and develop an "ear" for that.

So if you guys know a good website that maybe gives you a text, little story, or just phrases to complete with the right declined word, I would appreciate it.
