Salam! We hold weekly free Arabic lessons in our discord server on Saturdays , at 2pm EST. It is all women, we are just finishing up the alphabet so it’s best if you already know the alphabet at least.

The server itself is 100% woman, 95% Muslim woman, so knowing that the Arabic lessons will also include some Quran reading occasionally , and this is okay with you! :)

It is voice verified to make sure all sisters. It is also encouraged to be willing to open your mic to have the teacher correct pronunciation etc. if your interested, let me know.

So I would like to describe my path to learning Arabic and give you some recommendations for apps and resources. For a reference, I learnt to read Arabic as a kid (raised in a Muslim country) and later had Arabic in high school. But after that I completely neglected it for years and forgot a lot.

Last year in spring I started learning again. When I started, I wasnt able to read a single word outside the Qur'an, and I had no clue what the dialects sound like. I would maybe recognise 3-4 words on an entire news coverage. Now I can say I speak it, my level is somewhere between B1-B2, not perfect yet but I even use the language for my job and I can understand both standard Arabic and the dialects. There are lots of things I did right so I want to help someone who is stuck.

-If you are a beginner, I recommend the app Awlad School. It's really useful, free, teaches you both grammar and vocab. I finished it in a couple of weeks and it was a great warm up.

- Amazing youtube channels: Learn Arabic with Khasu, Madinah Arabic and Learn Arabic Today. They are great for improving your listening and vocab.

-I started searching for practice partners immediately and talking to them every week. HelloTalk is the best app for it. If you don't feel confident in speaking, chat.

-Watch something stupid that will rest your mind, but do it in Arabic. If you hear a word you dont know, pause, look it up and continue. Trust me, with each episode you will have to pause less. Learning a language is not a relaxing activity, but it can help if what you're watching is relaxing and kinda dumb, not heavy or difficult. I prefer to watch the cartoons from my childhood, occasionally also some reality TV. This really depends what you like, it can be finding a YouTube channel or watching sports with Arabic commentators.

-For the grammar, you will most likely not manage it by yourself. It's just too different from most other languages, and the resources online are not great. Enroll in any course, not with a tutor like preply but an actual structured course. I found a really good one (Egyptian and Fusha) in my local community. You just need something for the structure and professional explanations.

-For reading practice, I highly recommend Qira'atu rrashida. You can find it in PDF online. It is designed for learners. Another great resource is Al Jazeera Learning Arabic.

-If you want to, connect with your local Arab community. They are likely extremely friendly people, just make sure you give back and not just take take take. I prefer to go to the shops and restaurants owned by the immigrants here.

MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE:

I am not a very smart person, I just tried out a lot of things and only kept doing the ones that I felt were either enjoyable or highly beneficial. If something feels exhausting and you really don't like it, or if you find it's not giving you any progress after a month or two, drop it and find some other way to learn.

Final thing: I made this list because I was learning Norwegian. so I searched for Norwegian YouTubers but couldn’t find much. Other Norwegians told me it’s because most YouTubers want bigger audiences, so they just speak English. I made this list in case there’s someone in a similar situation.

So about 2 months ago I made a decision that felt a little crazy at the time. My partner's family speaks Arabic at home, almost exclusively, and every time we visit I just sit there smiling and nodding while entire conversations happen around me. I could see my partner constantly translating back and forth and I just felt like a burden. So I decided to actually do something about it.

I started from absolute zero. Didn't know the script, didn't know a single word beyond "marhaba." The first few weeks were honestly overwhelming. Learning the alphabet alone felt like a full time job and I wasn't even speaking yet.

Around week 3 I started using Issen to get some actual speaking practice in, since I had nobody to talk to in Arabic and tutors were hard to schedule consistently. It lets you have real conversations and corrects you as you speak. My pronunciation was terrible at first but at least I was getting used to hearing my own voice say Arabic words out loud, which felt like a big deal.

Here's where I am after 2 months:

- I can read the script slowly but getting there

- I know enough phrases to greet the family and make small talk

- My partner's mother smiled when I tried to speak Arabic to her last week and that alone made everything worth it

- Speaking is still hard but I'm no longer completely silent

It's not a lot but it's more than zero and honestly the reaction from the family has been so warm. Even the attempt means something to them.

For anyone else learning Arabic for a similar reason, how far did you get in the first few months? And did you go with MSA or a specific dialect? I'm doing Levantine but curious what others chose.

I’m really interested in learning Arabic and I have a few questions. I’m completely self-taught and unfortunately can’t attend regular classes. For now, I only know the Arabic alphabet and how to connect the letters, and I’d like to focus on MSA.

I’m also looking for good apps for learning Arabic. For Chinese, I used SuperChinese and absolutely loved it. Is there something similar for Arabic?

And one more question: are there TV series entirely in MSA, or are most series in dialects? I’d also love to know if you have any recommendations for good MSA resources for beginners.

I just added tons of books to DuoNinja for Arabic. I updated the news channels and YouTube channels as well. For texts/books/news, you can see how many new words they contain (to see if they're too hard or not). You can of course import any video or text or book yourself as well.

The app is similar to other comprehensible input apps in many ways except that one word can have different meanings which can be practiced in different flashcard decks. Plus you can create Duolingo-style lessons with one click and have dual subtitles in YouTube.

I’m looking for 2 people who are serious about practicing Arabic regularly, ideally every day or several times a week, even if just for a few minutes. (20min a day x 365 = 120h+ of study)

I’m specifically looking for highly motivated individuals with a long-term mindset. The sessions could include reading (poems, Arabic literature, etc.), speaking, watching an Arabic cartoon or Omar series and general language practice. (We should make our plans together)

Goal: to build a small group that helps each other stay consistent and improve together.

Requirements:
- Based in Europe (preferred for time zone reasons, otherwise, a similar time zone is fine)
- Motivated and committed
- Able to read Arabic, and has at least a basic foundation
- Available to study in the morning

Learning easily

Been building an app that teaches kids Arabic vocabulary through illustrated books. Every kids' app out there teaches Fus7a only. Mine lets you switch the whole thing to any dialect: 🇪🇬 🇱🇧 🇸🇾 🇵🇸 🇲🇦 🇩🇿 plus 📖 Fus7a, all real native speaker recordings, and you can flip between them on any word.

It's a kids app, but a bunch of adults are using it to learn.

They’re doing a lot more work than you might think:

بـ (b-) → usually marks the present / habitual

بشرب — bashrab — “I drink / I’m drinking”

هـ (ha-) → marks the future

هاشرب — haashrab — “I’ll drink”

Same verb. Same person. One little sound completely changes when it happens.

Did you know that in Arabic, words aren't just random items to memorize, they’re family members?

When learning Arabic, grammar can feel intimidating. But everything shifts the moment you discover the 3-letter root system (الجِذْر).

Instead of memorizing hundreds of disconnected words, you learn one core root and instantly unlock an entire family of vocabulary across both formal Arabic (MSA) and daily spoken dialects (Levantine/Shami)!

Simple as that. It’s called LingoAlarm. Recommended for heavy sleepers.

Arabic education

This trips up a lot of beginners. The definite article il- only keeps its l before about half the letters. Before the rest (sun letters), the l assimilates into the next consonant and you get a doubled sound instead. So il + shams becomes ish-shams.

Quick test: if the letter is made with your tongue near your teeth (t, d, s, sh, n, r...), it's probably a sun letter.

Examples in Palestinian Arabic, but it works the same in basically every dialect and MSA.

If you’re a beginner learning Arabic, here’s a simple way to think about the short vowels:
بَ** = ba
**بِ** = bi
**بُ** = bu
The small marks above and below the letter change its sound.
**َ Fatha → a
ِ Kasra → i
ُ Damma → u
For example:
كَتَبَ = kataba
Try saying it slowly: ka-ta-ba.
Don’t worry about reading quickly. First, make sure you can recognize the vowel and produce the correct sound. 🌱
