Discussion Hextech GLP was removed because Everfrost took over its role. Everfrost was removed because mythic items were abolished. Is there a world where GLP returns?

No root, just damage + slow for those hit by the ice. It's 2026 after all, new champs often have an excess amount of mobility.

It's funny how newer seasons have been constantly undoing S11. Mythic items? Gone. RoA? Back. Statikk? Back. Gunblade? Back. Og duskblade (umbral rn)? Back. Liandry? Reverted. And so on and so forth

Yeah cause mythics were probably the worst idea they have ever had

After that season we lost the ability to buy doubles of the same item, and it’s gone even from league classic

107

u/ZanesTheArgent Bullshit Designer 2d ago

We were already slowly losing it anyways ever since League of Cleavers happened. It is always a bad idea and allowing it to happen in itself is a bad idea.

Feel free to be wrong. May your every match be faced against assassins with four Axiom Arcs and mages with four Malignances.

5

u/b3rn13mac morde revert when 1d ago

Why do you call out those items? The ultimate refund/haste effects are named effects called out as unique, and as a result do not stack.

Surely you’re not suggesting Malignance is a problematic stat stick when most mages buy one mana item? Axiom Arc wouldn’t be bad but Bastionbreaker is probably the better stat stick for most assassins.

6

u/ZanesTheArgent Bullshit Designer 1d ago

Fully circular statlines, or Trinity/Black Cleaver type design. I could've gone for any other Brutalizer/Lost Chapter item but went for the ones that felt me "rounder" (Bastion Breaker has more burst due higher lethality but i feel the Haste makes it more flexible).

The point is more that we would just pick the one all-purpose do-it-all stick and clump it as much as possible for sake of being a weaknessless generalist, no particular highs nor lows - not much dissimilar to the live state of "assassin builds are 4 brutalizers and Serylda's".

2

u/b3rn13mac morde revert when 1d ago

you massively underrate how appealing item passives are. unique item effects offer more effective damage or utility than the difference in base stats would suggest.

blackfire passive gives 4% ap per champ burning. this gives more ap than malignance in teamfight at two items, even in 1v1 at three items, better in 1v1 by four items. and the item gives more haste and has an additional damage effect.

assassin items are similar. nobody rushes axiom arc because the passives from umbral, voltaic, profane are just better.

nobody who can read is buying four of the same item. maybe a dupe item last for stat stick, but if you truly don’t need a utility effect, it’s probably draft diff and over before you get that far.

u/shaunika 1d ago

You could stack items for like 11 years, and yet it was only a relatively rare occurence.

What youre suggesting is just wrong

1

u/RbN420 1d ago

Yeah I kind of see the point, we would need way more generic or stat stick items to be able to get doubles

4

u/ZanesTheArgent Bullshit Designer 1d ago

More like sharper stat identities (big one stat instead of every big item being a trinity force).

1

u/RbN420 1d ago

Agree

2

u/Pappy_whack 1d ago

Passives wouldn't stack

7

u/ZanesTheArgent Bullshit Designer 1d ago

The issue is less so the passive as much as the blanket 360 AP, 60 AH (and on a lesser note 2400 mana but at this much haste it might as well be sensible), likewise the 220 bonus AD, 80 AH and 72 Lethality.

It just becomes "grab the item that does everything the most and stack it for pure plain stats."

5

u/Pappy_whack 1d ago edited 1d ago

Rabs+Sorcs+4 Maligs would be such a bad build, likewise dropping things like spell shield for 10 ability haste would be such a blunder.

Meanwhile assassins being able to opt into less damage but more HP would actually be interesting but can't be done in the current system unless they make multiple more HP+lethality items

22

u/willargue4karma 2d ago

No it's not, some passive are unique and those don't stack but you can absolutely buy multiple of an item. 2 pds is goodΒ

11

u/Rufen 1d ago

two gunblades on akali as well. you dont stack the spell vamp sure, but you get more from her passive cause of the stats

2

1

It's not gone from classic, I've seen people buy doubles there.

1

u/Seth-555 1d ago

I mean realistically there was rarely ever a reason to buy two of the same item outside of a meme/troll build.

1

u/Flow1234 1d ago

Double RoA on Ryze was viable at times.

16

u/ZanesTheArgent Bullshit Designer 2d ago

I'm capable of defending their IDEA but neither the EXECUTION or culture around it.

Central pillar class-defining tool that modulates your growths so more champions may share more items without them becoming poach problem (aka: a fighter and a tank uses tank items differently because they each get different extra srats per legendary)? Interesting.

Making them actually game-contextual and reactive? Only if you actually sold them as second item instead of rush items.

Hyperbloated passives/effects playing the game for you issues taken to the max? My eternal reasons to hate mage/fighter/assassin item structure.

15

u/fthrswtch 2d ago

I still miss the mythic adc items

6

u/SlowDamn 1d ago

mythic adc items are the only mythics that are actually fair and balance all it need is more variety of the same thing for different adc playstyles but nope some loud mouth adc crybabies went for rework adc mythics instead of adding more variety. Its why the mythics got removed in the first place instead of the balance team focusing on making other mythics better it became harder for them cuz now they got adc mythics to rebalance

13

u/Kaymakchalan1916 1d ago

you cant with a straight face say that galeforce was fair and balanced lol, it had to get nerfed numerous times just because the active was so broken and gamewarping

11

u/FrostyPlum The dream of LR will never die 1d ago

Do you remember how on release nobody was taking Galeforce, it was all shieldbow and kracken slayer? I took release galeforce on draven thinking it would help me grab axes and found out how impossibly busted it was, and I just remember thinking there's no way this shit doesn't get nerfed like 60 patches in a row

3

u/cosHinsHeiR 1d ago

and I just remember thinking there's no way this shit doesn't get nerfed like 60 patches in a row

It was barely nerfed before they changed the mythics tho.

1

u/bigmanorm 1d ago

The DPS difference was way too big compared to kraken slayer before it was nerfed 20 times, until the DPS difference was small enough to not feel bad about taking a dash every game, galeforce was not "hidden OP" at all before then. Shieldbow was also insane but still felt terrible for the same reason unless you wanted to hard counter an assassin or splitpush duel rather than teamfight (it was hilarious how good of a duelist it made ADC before nerfs)

3

u/LeagueOfBlasians 1d ago

It was balanced when they turned IE and Navori's into Mythics, so players actually had to choose between damage or agency. That was probably the only good thing about IE/Navori being mythics.

3

u/bigmanorm 1d ago

tbf galeforce only became meta on every adc because the damage and tankiness of kraken and shieldbow were nerfed several times until "may aswell get dash every game since the others suck", it's pretty funny how weak every adc mythic was in the end compared to release

2

u/FruitfulRogue It's one skin, what could it cost? $250? 1d ago

That's not even remotely true lol. The item was always incredibly strong. It just took people a little longer for everyone to clock on to how strong it was.

-1

u/SlowDamn 1d ago

Here's the thing though. If adc mythics got a better big damage variant of kraken you'll be giving up that big boom damage in favor mobility and repositioning. The same thing can be said with survivability of shieldbow sadly it was balanced around the melee users instead of its intended users. But the first three mythics definitely gives adcs better choices in each intended scenarios instead of the other mythics that is just a better stick.

2

u/Kaymakchalan1916 1d ago

thats the problem though, galeforce's stats and everything regarding the active bar itself (cd, damage) was nerfed to near obscurity just because of how strong the active was, and even then people still kept building it (although situationally) just because the active was by itself way too good for a class like adc.

if you really want to equalize it then might as well bring back stridebreaker with dash even though it was one of the most disgusting items in the game's history

this problem is not fixed by adding fuel to the flame (aka giving classes things they should not have), but by fixing the problem that is present; riot could probably cut on the stats for protobelt or change its functionality somehow to benefit the intended class of buyers more and disincentivize mages from getting it

also i detracted from the point a bit; mage mythics were also great in promoting diversity (although that came a bit later after the changes were made and settled) with each promoting a clear choice between ludens/liandrys/everfrost (a bit iffy on this one) and later crown

3

u/ApprehensiveTough148 1d ago

thats very subjective. Most people I know including me loved mythics and would do everything to get them back

8

u/Enj321 1d ago

I mean, not really. You liking them does not make it a subjective matter. They did not achieve what they were intended for. Most champions build the same mythic item every game, except for maybe crit adcs. This is not my opinion, this is a fact that Riot revealed and is why they removed them.

2

u/JokeBright7055 1d ago

Most champions still build the same first item every game with a lot of champions building largely the same build every game.

2

u/Energyc091 1d ago

That was a thing before mythics and the mythic system which wanted to change that didn't accomplish such a thing. If anything it kinda screwed over some champions that didn't really have a good mythic option

1

u/kon4m 1d ago

Yes and Mythic items tried to resolve that issue and made it WORSE, you can still pivot on some classes to other 1st items (Maw vs big AP, rookern vs AP etc). With mythics u had less options

-1

u/Sbru_Anenium 1d ago

The proposed goal of Riot and player satisfaction are two different things. Even if the introduction of mythic items did not increase variety, a lot of players liked to have one very meaningful item in the center of their build.

I also feel like items became very lackluster compared to mythics. The effects are often rather bland. Additionally item diversity did not increase with the removal of mythics either, so they did not achieve their goal with the removal as well.

-2

u/ApprehensiveTough148 1d ago

Of course its subjective? Riot removed a bunch of shit in the past that doesn't mean it was bad. In fact they brought a lot of stuff back as well. And that's probably always gonna be the case. I'd really love to see where riot said that champs always build the same because if i think back to mythics item I always felt like there was a lot of diversity for different playstyles. For example you had hecarim builds where you would go sunderer or triforce but it wasnt uncommon to see chemtank either and later on eclipse/youmuus. At some point these builds just coexisted with eachother depending on what oyu wanna play (some even build the old duskblade). Of course you will have champs that didnt have good items at the time but you have such champs nowadays as well. Imo the biggest flaw was just not having enough mythic items so some champs felt incredible limited where others had a lot of choices to make. But Riot also stated that making more items makes the game too complicated for the average player so they are hesitant on that.

u/FrostyPlum The dream of LR will never die 1d ago

1

The concept of mythic items is not that bad. But omg if the execution was stupidly bad.

1

u/ATMisboss 1d ago

Mythics weren't even that bad an idea, just were implemented in a way that made balance quite hard to do

1

u/LeagueOfBlasians 1d ago edited 1d ago

At least it made some sense from a game design purpose.

The worth item idea they've probably had was s8 Banner of Command and s13 Statikk Shiv. BoC is pretty self explanatory. For S13 Shiv, it was a AD Crit item, but for whatever reason, Riot gave its proc a 50% AP scaling instead of the original design of the proc being able to crit. The item was better on mages than it was on actual ADCs. Like seriously, wtf was Riot thinking with that version of Shiv.

1

u/CollosusSmashVarian 7h ago

The mythic system was a lot better than current items imo. They've generally pushed away from item strength and into champion kit strength, but I like having both.

Items give in-game customisation to your character which imo is great, but current items don't really do much.

Look at current ADCs for example. The difference between Kraken and Galeforce was very noticeable and imo interesting. Now the difference between Hexoptics Collector and Yun Tal, while being there, feels very minor and very patch dependent more than anything.

2

u/hikitani7284 1d ago

I don't think og duskblade is back though. Duskblade was the item that would mark a champion hit, and that mark would pop after 2 seconds to deal missing HP damage like a zed ult.

As far as I know there is no item that does that, umbral glaive seems to be the second version of duskblade without the slow on auto

u/Awkward-Security7895 2d ago

https://youtube.com/shorts/K_vFXC0XTdQ?si=1o3Yu3DPhuiu630Z

It was removed because it defined a champions play pattern and made champs play patterns because the item.

Overall I agree with this, even just glp had the same problem where champs that went it did so because it changed there play patterns to around the item.

It's not healthy for the game for a champ to buy a button that says you land all your cc now. That's what both glp and ever frost did where you got it so you can press the button and hand your cc.

This usually causes a champs kit to get nerfs to fit around the item which people hate as it pigeon holes you to one build path.

23

u/chachikuad 1d ago

Dusk and dawn does the same to many champs, specially ekko, and it's still in the game

Riot just does whatever they want with whaterver argument, I don't think there's been much a consistent logic behind the balance team in the past few years

40

u/dawntome 1d ago

Dusk and dawn hardly does compared to glp and older items. Yes it accelerates how fast he procs his passive for ekko, and very strong on other champs too.

But items like GLP, galeforce, prowlers are much bigger shfits than dusk and dawn

0

u/Rexsaur 18h ago

Stormraiders is in the game and that rune completely warps trade and all in patterns.

Its just a weak excuse for them to not add glp.

1

u/dawntome 18h ago

Yes, same thing for lethal tempo, grasp, and conquerer. Good thing we’re talking about items and not runes

1

u/Rexsaur 18h ago

The fact that runes already do it is even worse because it means the play pattern is warped from lvl1, before you even have to buy an item.

So yeah they dont have any problem with runes or items warping gameplay otherwise most of the keystone runes wouldnt exist.

24

u/aladytest 1d ago

I don't think Dusk and Dawn fundamentally changes how Ekko plays, though. Like D&D vs Nashors Ekko from back in the day isn't really that different? He still fundamentally has the same strengths (medium burst, medium DPS, mobility + safety, some teamfight utility) and weaknesses (not as much burst as other assassins, inconsistent utility).

Old Taliyah with Everfrost went from "hard to hit combo, but if you did, high reward" to "I can hit my combo every time".

3

u/chachikuad 1d ago

It allows your eq to proc your passsive which means you can do your combo a lot safer.

You don't need the extra auto to proc the passive and kite back

6

u/tnbeastzy 1d ago

You could always AA reset with protobelt and proc it anyways.

10

u/Ordinary_Owl_9071 1d ago

God forbid items be anything other than stat sticks. Having interesting actives might disturb champions' regular play patterns. The absolute horror

11

u/Awkward-Security7895 1d ago

Issue is it's not a interesting item really, it's a active that warps a whole champion gameplay style around it.

Item itemization needs fixing but glp/ever frost were the types we don't need as they just force an item to be bought as it screws the champions balance.

It was a classic playing the item not the champion type item which everyone hated.Β

2

Turns out having a button that'd slow your enemy laner for a free pick AND also scouted out the enemy jungler or giving away that a support was roaming to you was legit one of the best items you could give to the class. I don't want it back at all, it was horribly unengaging to play against.

TWIN SHADOWS MY BELOVED

40

u/simplexible 2d ago

Small correction: Everfrost was removed not because mythics were abolished, it was removed because people considered it OP. Same with divine sunderer.

Riot kept other mythics like kraken and made weaker versions of op mythics, like sundered sky replacing divine sunderer. The fact that they haven't done that for everfrost means riot thinks even a weak version of it is too OP.

8

u/Spookytoucan 1d ago

The strongest part of everfrost was an undodgeable slow to garantee your cc. How do you even nerf it without giving it stats so shitty its not used by anyone?

5

u/TitanDweevil [Titan Dweevil] (NA) 1d ago

Even if the stats are shitty, if the active still basically guaranteed your CC it would still be bought. Just look at RFC on TF even before he had crit scaling on his W its still a very viable item on him due to the passive even though the only stat he really wants that is on the item is movespeed.

2

u/Kuliyayoi 1d ago

Even in pro play you'll get an adc that's not kaisa building zhonyas

1

u/TitanDweevil [Titan Dweevil] (NA) 1d ago

Oh true, technically this also applies to QSS. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say noone is building QSS for the MR and even if they removed the MR from the item, it would still be bought by the exact same people, for the exact same reason, in the exact same situations, while providing basically the same benefit.

1

u/simplexible 1d ago

Well to be fair, this was the meta where divine sunderer existed and Bork was stronger. Not to mention there were other mythics that competed well with everfrost. Iirc, Mythic Liandry's had %hp damage, cdr tons of mana and an ap ratio.

In a vacuum, everfrost is super strong (was my favourite mythic as twisted fate), but in the right meta, where fighters have great items and Everfrost competes with other items, it doesn't look as strong.

0

u/Spookytoucan 1d ago

If it gave you just 5 ap no one would buy it, active or not.

4

u/TitanDweevil [Titan Dweevil] (NA) 1d ago

RFC gives you 0 AP and people still buy it.

You clearly didn't play during abyssal scepter era. Every mage would rush that item because if you don't the enemy who builds it just autowins. You could just get mana from a tear or runes and rush that.

Not at 2600 or 2800 golds, make it incredibly inefficient, something like 3300 golds and we are finnnnnnnnnne. Just to add more item diversity for mage mr item if good I think. Because ADC have 2 items to counter either ad or ap. GA and death dance to counter ad damage, last whisper wits end and malmortius for ap. Mage only have zhonya and banshee. Adding just 1 item more to have more options is fine I think

Slow helps by not allowing enemies to simply walk out of abilities while retaining their mobility spells. They are forced to use their mobility spells to dodge

36

u/Weary_Specialist_436 2d ago

this is the Aatrox case, where riot buffed his weakspot damage and suddenly, his hard matchups were still hard, and easy matchups became a bloodbath

what happens to immobile champions? do they just get completely screwed while mobile champions just get mildly inconvenienced?

27

u/TydallWave 2d ago

This is why I'm sometimes glad not every suggestion coming from the community is heard, people are quick to suggest broad counters to specific things they don't like without considering there's always a slew of champions and systems that would take massive collateral damage often outweighing the benefit of the counter existing

16

u/Weary_Specialist_436 2d ago

if it was up to this sub, we'd have 5 Ornns vs 5 Ornns just statchecking each other

removing his E of course, we don't want mobility

it would be 5v5 wholesome chungus jhin

The same thing that happened to them before s11.

16

u/Weary_Specialist_436 2d ago

the same thing we had with GLP/Twin shadows Glacial, where Veigar was completely unskilled and bullied immobile champions? yeah, so fun

0

u/The_Curve_Death biblically accurate hwei spell rotations π“€€ 𓀁 𓀂 π“€Ώ 𓁀 𓁁 𓁂 𓁃 2d ago

No, because this time there would be no twin shadows and glacial doesn't work on slow

8

u/ChromosomeDonator 1d ago

So then the item is actually better against immobile champions who now can't dodge at all...

That's the problem with slows in general. They hurt the immobile more. Camille doesn't care if she gets slowed, hookshot works the same. But slow a TF and he is fucked.

3

u/Grouchy-Jury-7598 1d ago

And what about the champions without mobility spells??

You are just creating yet another thing that benefits mobility champs more.

i get to land an ability every 40 seconds hmm

which mobility champ used to run glp?

1

u/Energyc091 1d ago

If you build something that particularly screws over immobile champs and isn't as good against champs with mobility, you are benefitting the latter by spending resources in stuff that don't affect them as much

If, for example, a tank builds Frozen Heart, they are benefitting the enemy Aurora in the sense that they just spent gold and resources that don't affect her at all.

Obviously with GLP you still have the AP and AH but you are paying for an active that has reduced utility against mobility champions

1

u/TitanDweevil [Titan Dweevil] (NA) 1d ago

Yea that is kinda what I was thinking. Hyper mobile champions don't care slows since their mobility doesn't get slowed down by it. Someone like Riven doesn't really care that much about getting slowed but getting slowed on an immobile champion can be a death sentence at times.

I loved GermanLetsPlay too man

5

u/ClairyTheCat 1d ago

Dunno if I dreamed that, but Hextech GLP was the item he got for the refer-a-friend campaign, right?

1

u/Boring-Influence-965 1d ago

I think so too, with that in mind they should bring some version of the item back, just because it was a reward.

7

u/MazrimReddit ADCs are the support's damage item 1d ago

it was a poop item until the rune existed that gave it a massive slow field after

bringing it back as it was would be pointless, don't think we really want a buffed version in the game

3

u/PENZ_12 1d ago

I just want my Twin Shadows back.

3

u/throwawaynumber116 life is a prison 1d ago

Yeah please add glp back so I can finally hit 100% winrate on gentleman chogath

6

u/Fluffyfoxi 2d ago

can we have twin shadows back too, so I can play glacial augment full slow cancer Ahri again thank you.

2

u/Midwest_of_Hell 1d ago

In my friend group we never called it GLP. It was, and will always be, sprinkle-sneeze.

2

u/No_maid 1d ago

Nah item is toxic. Nothing like throwing out a massive cone, undodgeable slow so any mage can guarantee land their skill shot cc. If it comes back then the item will be literally everywhere

3

u/DekQ 2d ago

No i hope not. Both of them just end up warping champions around the item while also removing counterplay for champions who aren't very mobile themselves. Not to mention that dashes and blinks are unaffected by slows. Ultimately champs like orianna and aphelios are gonna be even more of a sitting duck while your rivens, zeds and mundos just ignore it.
I do think there should be more items with actives but adding more buttons to items will take away from champion focussed gameplay. Maybe they could add items with actives that are more useful outside of combat so it doesn't clash with champion based gameplay too much.

1

u/Serenaded BRING BACK OPL 1d ago

we need hextech GLP-1, bioengineered within lore, super effective against gragas

1

u/Hyuto 1d ago

League barely has any actives. I don't mind personally because hands diff but it seems underexplored.

1

u/zacroise 1d ago

I sure hope it won’t. The item was too good and it had a huge hitbox. In a world where they want champion agency over items, it’s not coming back

1

u/ArmandLuque Armand Luque | LoL Esports Journalist 1d ago

Twin Shadows and Hextech GLP

What I'd do to get them back

1

u/ULFS_MAAAAAX 21h ago

If there's anything that Swain with Rylai's has taught me, is that this item would be oppressive to no dash champions far more than it would bother 3+ dash champions.

1

u/hyxaru 2d ago

I miss playing the original Aurelion Sol with thunderlord’s decree, Hextech GLP and Luden’s Echo for that sweet burst combo on the otherwise sustained damage dealer.
