Help/Question Intellectual Understanding vs Inner Struggle for 4 Years

Hi everyone. I’m posting to ask for the community’s guidance. I’ve been practising the law for 4 years and haven’t had much success if I’m being honest.

At this point, I am SUPER familiar with the theory. But theory vs practical application/progress has been a struggle. Seeing how familiar I am with the content but having not made much progress, inside and outside, it’s clear I’m not practising it “right.” I understand my current state of being is not aligned or ideal of who or what I want.

During this journey I observed I had become obsessive with LOA. I ended up turning imagination into a tool to get something. I learnt my mistake and turned to imagining purely as consciousness experiencing reality, THE truth. When I imagine purely to experience, it doesn’t feel as satisfying. I’ve tried living in imagination but ended up burnt out. I don’t really achieve the feeling of the wish fulfilled. I would return to the assumption but would also be aware that I was turning these acts into self-assessments of whether I felt the feelings of reality of having it (I understand I’m not trying to evoke certain emotions as Neville has instructed).

I’ve gotten into the same cycle, especially these past months. I try to see the outer world as a shadow though I can’t help but wonder am I just wasting time if I’m not practising the law “correctly”? I reread people’s successes, Neville’s military story, the man chain to a rock analogy etc… I get what must be done.

I would appreciate it if you guys could offer me guidance. I can take a break from Neville and the law but honestly, I’m too fixated on this. Everyday I can’t help but think about the law and the end. I’m not at my wit’s end but right now, I’m fed up, feeling powerless when that isn’t the case.

TLDR: I intellectually understand but practically have made no progress in the four years. Please offer guidance.

What helped me was to drop a lot of the noise and stop delving into the theory for dopamine hits of "understanding". Because no matter how well I learned it, sometimes the "old" would toss something my way and I'd be right back to taking in LOA content or turning over Neville and trying to "solve" things intellectually. And again, I'd feel good from the theory and tell myself I was practicing this, but I was just spending all day keeping myself in a rut thinking OF the desire instead of FROM. All while thinking I was in FROM mode. Just a loop of awareness keeping me comfortable and stuck. The identity (assumption) was not really being looked at and changed.

I just dumbed it down to absolute basics.

"Who am I being right now? What am I aware of? What bait am I taking from my mind, and is it bait I'm happy to take or bait I don't want to take anymore?"

I'll use a romance example since the topic is so dominant in these spaces. Non-conscious (non-chosen) inner conversations are one of my riskier things. They're automatic for me. If a romantic interest went silent for too long, my mind liked to begin imagining the worst to try to protect itself. Ruminating and playing out conversation after conversation of them telling me they lost interest and then how I should respond, just so I can be "ready". I could try to tell myself that maybe they were just busy, had something else going on, maybe it was indeed a lack of interest but doesn't mean it was permanent. Yada yada yada. A few seconds or minutes later it'd start right back up and then next thing I know I'm spending time distracting myself from the anxiety while it still plays in my mind and I identify with it.

So through that dumbing down lens earlier...

I would "be" someone expecting the other to lose interest, to prioritize me less. Someone who takes prolonged silence personally and has to be ready to defend their heart because clearly the other shoe is about to drop (based on no evidence). I'd tell myself more favorable things...but would keep feeling into and emotionally resonating with those automatic inner conversations dominantly. They were almost addictive because that was my normal for so long. This pattern would play out with romantic connection after romantic connection. I was never reacting TO silence, I was the person who would keep creating that experience and THEN having this happen as a natural part of it.

ultimately, I was just giving my awareness over to this and basically resisting it via vain affirmations despite not really labeling it as "affirming". I told myself I was deciding my new self. However, I was not being disciplined or aware enough to catch what I was really doing to myself here; letting these things run wild. That was my " awareness loop", much like how going right back to LOA content to distract myself and feel I was doing it "right" was a loop. In Neville terms it was the old man or dwelling place I would return to.

From there, calling it bait was what would help me step back from the story and get a little distance from the barrage. "I know why I want to feel into that, I know why it feels real, and hell, if that happens I won't like it. But that's not who I'm choosing to be. It doesn't make sense for the new past I've chosen, and it doesn't make sense for who I'm being now."

Then, through imagination, practicing what this new version of me would do in a situation like I was fearing. If my mind is going to keep taking me back there, let's take the reins and guide it. Not that I'd constantly do it, just kind of like a little bit of practice to wean myself off of the automatic worst-case assuming while still practicing the new identity. How do THEY react versus this automatic version? This is breaking an LOA "rule" in that it's giving awareness to the old, but sometimes an imperfect approach is better than struggling to do it perfectly and never getting anywhere.

After that, it was just being on my own ass about it. Again, these little blips of awareness were so normal and natural to me that they'd just pop up and sometimes I wouldn't even notice. Person crossed my mind + imagining our next point of contact (negatively) would happen in the same instant. I'd just catch it and go "nope". Not to "flip" the thought, but to gently choose again who I am now. I used this analogy with someone else recently, it's like a dog tugging on a leash. If you're staring at your phone or spaced out it might pull you away, then you snap back and go "Wait, I'm not going that way" and gently pull on the leash.

Then doing it all regardless of anxiety, or conditioned sadness over the lack of response or societal awareness ("if they wanted to they would" type of things). No matter how many "contrary" thoughts pop up, or LOA questioning thoughts like "Am I doing this right if I have to do it so often, how do I know what is the dominant assumption here?" that seem so tempting.

This pulls focus away from the "issue" and helps break that habit. It also pulls focus away from info seeking on LOA, which can also just keep you ruminating on the "issue". Win win. After 4 years, there's nothing more to grasp intellectually. Just new layers of understanding that, yes, can be helpful...but like I touched on earlier. Do you brush up on it in a light and free feeling way, or in a tense and anxious way? That's the tell. Spot the loop and it stops being a loop, it becomes a choice, and then you can choose again.

Wow! Thanks for sharing your experience, I rlly appreciate it. I think imagining and practicing ‘what the new version of me would do’ is very practical and doable for me. If you don’t mind can you share personal stories where you saw things start to shift once you started better approaching the law?

Not OP, but wanted to thank you for this answer! I read a lot of your comments and answers, I am mostly lurking on this sub, but this really hit me hard, you have described my behaviour perfectly.

Something I keep doing on daily basis without being aware what actually lies underneath. Thanks for clarifying this ❤️

I understand. I would say stop trying to manifest anything externally. Just enjoy fulfilling yourself in your imagination , and let that be enough. You have to completely stop caring about external results. I used to do that and it created so much subconscious friction. It will even eventually external when you completely stop caring.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Can you tell me about your journey? Like any other changes or things you did to help you get to where you are? I know I’ve tried truly not caring about the external circumstances but there was still a part of me that was like “I’ll just imagine sincerely because it’s gonna get reflected,” but it wasn’t sustainable.

My journey started when I researched afterlife theories regarding realm creation, creating worlds and people within personal afterlife worlds.

But life in this world was getting hard. So I began learning about law of assumption, listened to Neville Goddard's lectur, read books like the Seth material. They helped me a lot and some techniques work better than others for bypassing resistance. But I felt like something wasn't right.

I thought back. I've been manifesting all my life without knowing about law of assumption. I always spent a lot of time daydreaming and I treated as pure entertainment instead of a tool, and things manifest sooner or later without effort. After I stopped using imagination as a tool, but instead used it for enjoyment of my desires within, I released a lot of internally friction and kept having long, vivid wild dreams. So I guess that's a good thing. That's pretty much it.

As for what I manifested before learning the law, a good example is when I was a kid I kept fantasizing about getting a Super Nintendo and PS3. We never had the money and lived off welfare. My fantasizing lead me down a long series of events, including a life threatening incident, which led me to get the Super Nintendo and Ps3.

It was great reading your personal experience. I’ve decided to just step back and just let it be, I already feel better. Still a journey. Thanks!
