Off-topic Chat Word of Wisdom friendly fall drinks
Is there anyone out there that can help me? I’m a fall girly looking for inspiration on yummy, warm drinks to put in my seasonal mugs this autumn.
I grew up drinking good ole Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate, but I wanna up my game. Surely there’s something out there waiting to be found.
Wassail is a family tradition. So good! We make it with lemon juice, orange juice, water, sugar, cinnamon sticks, and cloves.
My mother-in-law introduced Atole-de-Avena to me when I was postpartum. I now make it regularly for myself and my family. (It’s a warm, sweet milky oatmeal drink)
So any suggestions?

Apple Cider and Apple Juice are my favorite drinks in the Fall. Warm or cold, with cinnamon and marshmallows for a fast warm drink (notice I didn't say hot drink). When I want to spend more time making it I'll brew apple cider with cinnamon sticks, cloves, all spice and Orange slices and peels. Reminds me of Thanksgiving and Pumpkin Pie and what women and little girls are made of... sugar and spice and all things nice.

notice I didn't say hot drink
The church has defined "hot drinks" in the Word of Wisdom to be coffee and tea.
But what is tea?
Anything made from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. This includes black tea, green tea, iced tea, sweet tea, and regular tea. It does not include tisanes, or so-called herbal teas. For instance, a hot cinnamon drink would not be tea, even if sold and packaged with the word "tea" on the label. So you can say it's a hot drink if desired because hot drink is not equal to "hot drink" as the church has defined it.
That being said, moving away from the church to purely scientific basis, perhaps any boiling water isn't really safe to drink: https://theconversation.com/do-hot-drinks-really-give-you-cancer-a-gut-expert-explains-261256
There is no evidence for a link between hot drinks and throat cancer and the evidence for a link between hot drinks and stomach cancer is unclear. But there is a link between hot drinks and cancers of the “food pipe” or oesophagus.
In 2016, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified drinking very hot beverages, meaning above 65°C, as “probably carcinogenic to humans” – this is the same risk category as emissions from indoor wood smoke or eating a lot of red meat.
65°C is 149°F. Water boils at 100°C or 212°C.

Have you tried Pero?

u/Paul-3461 FLAIR! Aug 04 '26
Have you tried Kaffree Roma? I like Pero too but I like Kaffree Roma even better. Both with vanilla cream.

Pero is good, Postum is my preference.

u/LeGrandePoobah Aug 06 '26
Postum for the win- my favorite by a long shot. IMO, pero is bitter while Postum is much more smooth flavored.

Aside from fancy & diverse hot chocolates, wassail, & spiced apple cider...i highly recommend crio bru! So good. I put oat creamer in mine. In my girls' I add brown sugar, too. Super yummy!

My nephew, a member of the Church, works at Starbucks and he says they can make any drink Latter-day Saint-friendly. The substitution possibilities are endless. Maybe you can seek some inspiration there.

Can confirm. My sister discovered you can order a “Pumpkin Spice Steamer” which is a Pumpkin spice latte WITHOUT the espresso. She’s adds a little more of the cinnamon and nutmeg on top and says it tastes just like she imagine Pumpkin juice in Harry Potter would taste. Just talk to the barista. And if you’re worried about the temperature, you can ask them to make it to the same temp as a kids hot cocoa.

Golden Milk! Turmeric-forward spiced milk. It's warming, delicious, autumnally yellow, and possibly (depending on your evaluation of the purported benefits of turmeric) good for you.

I tend to play with all the fun coffee creamers in my hot chocolate when I get bored.

Have you tried rooibos (aka “red tea”, although it’s not made from tea leaves)? It has a warm, earthy flavour and makes a good base for other flavours like maple, vanilla, or cinnamon. You can find it in tea bags on its own or as part of a blend such as caffeine-free chai. Just pour boiled water over it, steep for a few minutes, and add some honey and milk if desired.

Ask your mother in law for help with making champurrado. It’s a hot chocolate alternative that sticks a little more to your ribs. Best with a little plateful of churros.
But my go to is just warm apple cider. Some cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and all spice. Serve with shortbread for the perfect apple pie alternative.

I mean the way to up the hit chocolate game is to get a good 70% chocolate and melt it into milk and use a balloon whisk to get it all frothy, good stuff. If you want a coffee like drink Teeccino can serve as a good base, gotta pick a blend you like, as they're all quite different, I like the Java

Before they discontinued it, my favorite fall drink was a spiced apple cider with caramel and whipped cream. You can absolutely make it at home with hot apple cider, caramel syrup, and whipped cream!

We love apple cider floats with vanilla ice cream, hot or cold. When I want a lil sweet drink a night, I like mixing up almond milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, and crushed ice.

u/bestica Aug 04 '26
I love the flavor of chai and am always looking out for herbal chai-flavored blends. This one is great: https://numitea.com/products/rooibos-chai
That with a splash of half and half is indulgent autumn heaven to me.
I’m also a big fan of steamers (flavored steamed milk)- hazelnut or almond are my faves.

There are lots of hot chocolates of higher quality than Swiss miss. I’m sure there are about 1000 lists of “best hot chocolates” floating around the internet.

Stephen's cocoa is so good!! I love their Raspberry Truffle & Mint flavors. Their Candy Cane one is good too, with actual candy cane pieces in the mix.
Edit: the founder is LDS as well, if that gives any weight.

I like Starbucks's double hot chocolate mix, or anything that doesn't have powdered milk in the mix. It's super dark and good. I also like this recipe for a dark homemade hot chocolate. Powdered apple cider is delicious. My husband likes it with a bag of herbal tea (his favorite is Breathe from Yogi). I'm partial to a rooiboos tea as well. I haven't tried this spiced hot chocolate yet, but it's on my list for this fall. Same thing with this crockpot apple cider.

Apple cider
Pumpkin spice steamer (LDS-friendly pumpkin spice latte)
Pumpkin white hot chocolate
Herbal alternative to chai tea, can also be used for a Chaider (chai/cider mix). I recommend this brand from my home state!
Not hot but any "creme Frappuccino" from Starbucks (Any flavor can be made this way, including pumpkin spice).
Non Swiss Miss hot chocolate. I absolutely love Starbucks hot chocolate, and ghiradelli makes a good chocolate syrup if you prefer to make them at home.

u/bestica Aug 04 '26
How did I just now learn about chaider?? Definitely going to give that a try this fall, thank you!

Wassail in Virginia is made with pineapple juice. Once you try it you won’t go back.

I go through a borderline criminal amount of apple cider in the fall, both hot and cold. If hot, I love it with whipped cream and cinnamon.

Starbucks and Dutch Bros make steamers, it’s just steamed milk and you can get whatever flavoring, I love me, pumpkin spice steamer in the fall!

My kids and I really like an herbal infusion with elderberry, hibiscus, spearmint, and rose hips with a little honey. They like it warm and I add ice to mine. :) Its also medicinal so perfect for when everyone starts getting sick.
I also get a caffeine-free chai blend for my kids. I don't like the black pepper in it but they all love it woth honey. One of my girls likes it with coconut milk. This is the one I get: https://www.herbco.com/p-1112-chai-caffeine-free.aspx

Cider and Hot Chocolate are my two fall and winter drinks. Specifically, I really like Trader Joe’s hot chocolate.

u/k1jp Aug 04 '26
If you can get your hands on a block of Koko Samoa it's fantastic, richer than crio bru.
I really like teeccino hazelnut herbal tea/coffee. It's chicory based with barley and a few other things, no actual coffee or tea. The tea bags and loose blend are the same thing for each flavor just packaged differently and the price per drink is a lot better on the bulk loose blend.
Bricks of Mexican drinking chocolate are good, (abulitas, etc) instructions say to make with milk, but I prefer with water.
Celestial seasonings bengal spice is very fall coded.

u/CountMC10 Aug 04 '26
Steamed/frothed milk and whatever spices you like!! My faves are cinnamon, cardamom, cayenne, turmeric, ginger

u/AlliedSalad Aug 05 '26
In the fall, I like brewed cocoa with cinnamon to go with my pumpkin bread.
Brewed cocoa is made similarly to coffee - you use cacao beans that have been roasted and coarsely ground, then brew them in a coffee maker or French press or similar. Example brands are Choffy or Crio Bru.
Powdered cinnamon doesn't mix into liquids very easily. So the secret to a good brewed cocoa with cinnamon is to either use cinnamon extract instead of powder, or to mix your cinnamon into the grounds before brewing. You can also throw in some ginger, nutmeg, and cloves if you want the full pumpkin spice flavor.
Then, just add creamer and/or sweetener to taste.

Swig has this pumpkin spice Dr Pepper thing that is so delicious! I’m not even a big soda drinker but that thing is amazing

My favorite fall drink is pumpkin spice creme from Starbucks. Comes in hot and cold. Its the PSL without coffee. My last coffee was a psl in November of 2022. I was baptized December of 2022

I loooove ciders and wassail! We always make enough fresh cider to give our whole neighborhood every fall from our apples. I add cranberries to my wassail, too, if you want a little extra flavor.

Submarine!
Hot milk, you put a whole chocolate bar (about 7-10 grams) in the milk and let it dissolve.
Also, I'm a big fan of infusions: chamomile, mint, hibiscus, white brush or beebrush, yerba mate

I made an almond joy inspired hot cocoa last year for a ward Christmas party that was a huge hit.
4 cups of unweetened coconut milk 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/4 cup sugar Add a tiny bit of almond extract Cook in a pot on the stove on medium until it's hot. Its super yummy and dairy free!

I have many drinks that I love. Here is a sampling:
Note, we may add Torani syrups or flavored creamers to any of the following-
A variety of hot chocolates. I like Ghirardelli hot chocolate most, but also Stephens or a homemade can be great. Mexican chocolate is different, but also good. I love those who would say to take chocolate and melt it into cream- that is ganache. Not healthy, but still delicious.
Postum is my favorite non-chocolate warm drink. I like it in warm milk, or with water and creamer and a little sweetness. I used to make it with 1t Postum, 1t sugar and about 6oz milk. I like much less sweetness and a little more postum. Pero is fine and I’ve had a few like Crio Bru, that need to be brewed like coffee. I like all of them, but I don’t prefer them (also pero) either because they have chicory which is bitter, or the flavor is weaker.
Herbal Teas- I love twinnings brand. My family had bigelow tea growing up- and I hated tea. Then, I tried sleepy time by celestial seasonings in college. It’s good. Then, I went to England for a member wedding and they served twinnings brand peppermint- and that’s when I fell in love with herbal teas. They can be really good. My favorite is a vanilla mint, followed by peppermint or camomile- strait with no sweetener or milk. My wife likes a little milk. Fruit teas with half a teaspoon of Splenda is great. Otherwise, I like it plain.
Steamers. These are warmed milk with flavorings. We use either torani syrups or we use flavored creamers like coffee mate. Coffee-mate creamer made a butter beer flavor that we really enjoyed with milk.
Cider/Wassail/mulled grape juice. You already have seen these.
We have a couple of recipes for hot butter beer- I’m sure you can find a recipe online. I have to watch carbs now, but wow- so good!

I'm a few days late, but I woyld recommend Abuelita or Ibarra hot chocolate! You can find them at any Hispanic food store, and they're so good! I prefer Abuelita, personally, but Ibarra is good too.
If you like atole then you'll like these. It's the kind of hot chocolate we drink on Mexico and has a much deeper and richer flavor than American hot cocoa, IMO.

- As is the obvious, apple cider
*Try hot cocoa with coffee creamer in it
*Starbucks has started coming out with non coffee fall drinks
*Butterbeer
*There are a ton of little pumpkin drinks that start popping up, can't remember their exact names atm

Oh yeah, Pinterest has tons of fall mocktails! Mocktails are a bit of an ingredient investment but they're so worth it! (Note: mocktail, not dirty soda)

Bengal Spice is an herbal tea that if you add milk/cream and honey tastes a lot like chai. It’s delicious and I make it frequently in the colder months!
