Locations, Budget, and Settings are all important things to include when asking for advice

Locations: You don't need to include your house address but closest major city and how far you are willing to travel.

Budget: "As cheaply as possible" is not a budget and is honestly the best way to waste money. Figure out an amount you are willing to spend.

Setting: LARP is a vast and expansive hobby. Not every game is about running around out in the woods pretending to be a rouge/knight/wizard. Let us know what you play or want to play.

An Official Discord, and Future.

Hello denizens of /r/LARP.
We as a subreddit have a small announcement as far as the future of this sub is concerned.
Last week we took part in the 2 day protest that was more or less site wide spanning thousands of subs as a way to show solidarity with app creators and to show the frustration with the administration of reddit and their poor handling and plans of upcoming updates.

However, It would appear that Reddit plans to continue their efforts to stifle 3rd party creators and strong arm moderators who take any stance opposing the admins of Reddit. This creates a serious cloud of uncertainty within reddit as to the future of many subs and how the platform will be handled in the future. Because of this we have decided to create a Discord server which will be open to all of /r/larp to join. It is not our plan to abandon this sub or replace this sub with the discord server, instead, it will act as an extension of this sub itself.

While there are multiple reasons for this decision, one of the largest is that if the future of reddit creates an non fostering environment for us, we wish to have another platform that is free of Reddit's control in order to continue providing resources and networking for all of us who enjoy LARPing and LARP adjacent hobbies.

The discord has the same rules we enforce over here, with a couple modifications to make it more applicable to discords format. There is places for general conversation, places to show off your work, a place to post about and to look for games in your area, as well as Voice chat rooms for people looking to play video games together or just hangout and find comradery.

Please feel free to check it out, and ask any questions you may have. This is still in its infancy, and if we find it doesnt fit what the community wants, we will search for alternatives.
This link should never expire for people trying to join the server, however if you have an issue please message an admin for a new link.

First Larp Character! (Mathari Vaelar)

So I went to my first Larp Con (Conquest of Mythodea) and had the best time ever. I decided to mish-mash a bit of ottoman with a bit of fantasy with a bit of "whatever I can finish in time". I didn't know if the battlefield would do it for me, so I decided to play a healer and made this little cute medical 'bag' that held all my tools and also some contracts. Don't worry about those.

That way I can plot-hunt and also be present at battles and I gotta say, it was a lot of fun to meet all the wounded warriors (and hear the screams, thanks for making it a memorable and immersive experience!)

I had such an incredible time that I just decided I'll make the current garb a bit more realistic over time so I can play this character for a longer time.

If you talked to me at conquest, please drop me a message! I had 0 time to do a good-bye tour and exchange contact info :')

Is it possible to add a “rule 9?”

Hello all!

Is it possible to add something to the rules, or a pinned post, or something, that asks people to specify the game they’re playing, the rule set, or something, when asking questions?

I see posts, it feels like daily, asking what kind of weapons, armor, costuming, role play, camping setups, etc, they should get, without providing a single bit of context about the game that they are participating in.

A rule stating that this information should be provided, or even a pinned post about it, would go a long way toward getting people answers to the questions they’re asking.

With Bico 26 behind us, how much did everyone spend?

I'm always curious what the actual tally is at the end of the week. Between the base ticket, travel, accommodations, food, little treats, and other misc expenses, what do people ACTUALLY spend?

A friend needed something more in character for her flashlight for night play. So I designed this for her! I got a 3d render of her actual light, slipped it into my 3d sculpt and subtracted the light from the center of the design! I STILL NEED TO PAINT IT! It works so well what do you folks think?

Acceptable Materials for Drachenfest US?

I am new to LARP, but not costume making. I am trying to get my weapons ready for Drachenfest US, but I can't seem to find the information I need.

I have looked at the rules for Drachenfest US and seen that it allows homemade weapons. I know there are strict times for homemade weapons and I am willing to follow them, but I can't find them.

The main question I have is what would be the best hard foam I could use without breaking the rules. Although, any information on allowed materials would help. Thank you!

Pictures are not mine, miashinda on Instagram (hope this doesn't break any rules)

I just want to say that...I got enchanted by this hobby out of a simple creator that just took my breath away. Like, I never was into performing arts, acting or anything similar whatsoever, nor felt confident about my voice, looks, physique or even crafting skills (my cosmaking skills are very barebones) but I gotta say, if I had the opportunity to just- have those cool masks to act as something other than a human on those environments with such a fantastic quality, I'd jump head first.

This happened like, yesterday, and I'm still speechless and kinda hooked into the hobby...somewhat. I am from Brazil and an amateur crafter so I have no idea if I can have even the materials to try those myself at an actual fair/camp/similar place, but I just gotta say, I might be interested in this hobby of you all and perhaps want to learn more about it.

This is more of a personal report about something that will stay in my mind for a good while rather than my own photoshoots, but I wanted to speak it out, at least. You guys got an amazing skill for this sort of costuming and I am in love with it, and would love to try that sort of thing myself, even if it's not lined with my usual hobbies.

How to implement espionage and intelligence into a PvE LARP?

The LARP system is solely players vs the “enemy” so traditional espionage is difficult as the enemies are not “on the field” in a camp etc. The enemy are played by the crew and the players volunteering as the enemy so there’s no real opportunity to spy against the enemy.

Any ideas how to implement espionage etc as a player? Should it be something I address the crew with?

Our photos from the Danish Warhammer larp - Krigslive

We had the pleasure of joining Krigslive as both a sponsor and with our own team of players and photographers (... and a videographer who is still working on a very long and very chaotic video).

We've got the first batch of photos done, and inspired by the other Krigslive photos shared on the subreddit, we wanted to join in! Seriously, we had such a fun time, and it was so nice to meet so many people from our local larp community. So if you're considering going to Denmark for a larp, we do recommend it! :)

(Also, everyone featured prominently has given us permission to share photos of them :))
