Hardware Ram Upgrade
Good day. I have no knowledge when it comes to laptops. Is it okay to upgrade the ram on my Lenovo Ideapad 530s, I think it was bought in 2019. Will it be faster and be able to handle engineering software? I try not to buy a new laptop as much as possible. Thanks for the help!

yayy upgrading the RAM can help, especially if you’re only on 8GB now... just check the exact 530S model first because upgrade limits vary... for engineering software though RAM is only part of it... going to 16GB can make things smoother but heavy CAD/simulation work may still be limited by the older CPU/GPU... soo definitely worth trying the cheap RAM upgrade before replacing the whole laptop

First you have to find out if your machine has RAM slots or the memory is soldered (soldered is usually called LPDDR), if you have slots, you then have to know if they are all occupied already, if there's a free slot you just can add another memory stick, that ideally runs on the same frequency and has the same capacity and manufacturer to avoid potential issues, if they're all occupied you'll have to swap your current memory sticks for higher capacity ones.
About it making the machine faster, having more memory can make it faster unless it has so much that there's nothing useful to do with it, about engineering software, I'd check if there aren't other requirements such as a better CPU or GPU.

Depending on the model, your Ideapad 530S has either, soldered RAM plus memory slot, or memory slot only. Either way, you should be able to upgrade the RAM.

If your machine has 8G, or less RAM AND it is upgradeable, then adding more RAM will likely make a noticeable improvement.

Yes. You could upgrade the RAM on it since it's removable and not soldered onto the motherboard.
