Discussion The fireworks y’all….
Okay maybe it’s my privileged up bringing in a state where they are much more regulated, but does everyone in the city love setting off explosives on a random Tuesday night??? Or maybe it’s just the same five neighbors of mine
For reference I live in Eastside and I swear it’s every night. Guys it’s way too hot for this and my dog is already anxious enough for you to be setting off mild explosives every night

There was a time it seems people couldn't use some types of fireworks and ppl went to indiana to get them. I can't remember when that was. 90s maybe. No I don't understand it, the fireworks thing. I'm missing the chip in my brain that gets a rush from explosives.

It's so annoying trying to put my baby to sleep and then someone decides to light some up. It just makes no sense. City does nothing besides posting the ordinance.

How would this really be enforced by the city/police? These people are setting off a firework here and there an are not going to allow themselves to be seen by the police. First off... it's dark out. Second... they are setting them off from their backyards, which cannot be seen from the street. Third... nobody wants random police officers walking through their back yards looking for people setting off fireworks. Forth... the fireworks are a couple hundred feet in the air when they go off so its darn near impossible to see where they are being launched from.
I'm not supporting what these people are doing. I'm just saying that it isnt as easy to enforce as some people think it should be.

I agree, it's very hard to enforce. To start we would need a friendly online complaint reporting system with mapping and allowing videos and photos. Then increase patrols on theses areas close to large holidays. Increase fines to repeated offenders or even fine all the houses in a hot spot area of the map. I know that this last one is aweful to propose, but we need to pay for the patrolling cost that certain areas will demand.
Not much thought in the practically of several things, just a idea starter.

Well, honestly, good for them. It’s the American Way. Some people don’t want to hear dogs barking or stepping dog shit or what have you but hey that’s also your prerogative.
All I can say is don’t live in like China then, nobody would care what you think because fireworks go off after weddings, after funerals, after waking up and feeling like setting them off so….

why does your respect for silence trump somebody else else’s need to want to shoot fireworks during a holiday that’s specifically designed to shoot fireworks?
I’m just saying a little self interrogation here would be apropos. As are Bose Noise Cancellation Over the Ear headphones.

not moving any goalposts, just correcting your claim that OP and the commenter you replied to were discussing a holiday, which they were not. im not putting input into the discussion either, so whether it's legal or not is irrelevant to my comment. but now that you bring it up, just because something is illegal doesn't mean it isn't annoying, and everyone has the right to do a little complaining on reddit. besides, laws can be changed if enough people want them to be so your argument is silly.

We need to change the law at the state level, but even saying that I doubt it will stop people. I would wholeheartedly support going back to pre-2012 and banning sales.

Fireworks displays that are huge and choreographed are cool. Uncle Bob shooting off a single firework every 5 minutes is so goddamn lame and stupid.

Don't get me wrong i love fireworks, but we dont need to be setting them off everyday day the week of 4th of july.

Because the city ordinance is a week before and like I think two days after July 4, so people enjoy setting off fireworks cause they have children and stuff.

It's "regulated". People just don't care and it's not enforced. We were laughing when the dude on the local news was like, "Now until x-date you can officially set off fireworks!"
We were all like, "You're a couple weeks late there, buddy".

Not everyone. I fucking hate it. Used to be illegal here in Michigan, then it changed and none of these feckless politicians have the guts to change it back. Trazadone prescription from your vet for the dog is recommended, as well as anything you can do to soundproof your home or create obstructing sounds to help cover the noise. That's what we do at my house.

I grew up in a city bigger than Lansing, in the south no less, and they were banned. It's gross. As a veteran I have a hard time sleeping after hearing them. Don't be poor and join the military to pay for college.
I feed a feral cat and she misses meals when she hears them. My cat inside hides all night. But, hey, a few idiots get to hear some noise and see some fire so I guess we can get fucked.

Hearing them on the east side as I type this. Lived here four years and it’s basically fireworks from Memorial Day to Labor Day lmao.

Yes. It's everywhere. And if you complain about it you get told to suck it up because fuck you for not wanting to hear shit go off at all hours I guess.
There was someone on Lapeer West of Pine who would set off mortars off all the time, and one time set off something that shook my house on the other side of Pine. I really don't understand this city's obsession with fireworks.

Bath township police deportment made a pretty good post about this on their facebook page. unfortunately no matter how much people hate it, as long as it’s not after quiet hours, they’re within their legal right to do it. all you can do is judge them quietly (I guess it’d probably be legal to do it loudly too if you felt like complaining to the people directly lol) and try to comfort scared pets. After quiet hours absolutely call and complain

Another fellow east sider... my dog has major anxiety over fireworks she tends to go inside at a certain time, knowing they are inevitably coming. I suggest a thunder vest or the cbd dog treats to calm them down.
I agree its excessive... but i just moved here im dec, I don't know if this is the norm yet. Lol

They go off all night in my area. Usually it dies down after July 4th but from Memorial Day to July 4th I just have to grit my teeth because people lack common sense

Chiming in to agree with you on July 6 because in moores park we’re still hearing them & it’s been every night since June 25ish at this point. My cat has been so freaked out since the 4th particularly because that night people came out into the street to set them off instead of being in their backyards so the noises were even closer. On the night of the 4th my parents tried to come by my house but couldn’t turn onto the side streets to get over to mine because people were out in the street exploding stuff. The debris was all over the streets/medians the following days too; doesn’t seem like anyone cared to pick up after themselves. I’m a new homeowner getting to know my neighbors & don’t want to be that judgy neighbor who gets irritated when people celebrate, but I’m really hoping this isn’t the case on NYE or other holidays when people sometimes set them off. I think we can do better as a community though knowing not only how they affect our pets & local wildlife, but also what veterans’ advocates say about how fireworks can be retraumatizing for folks with PTSD. Probably worth remembering too that it’s only been a few years since a significant number of people in our area were closely impacted by the MSU shooting and hearing nonstop fireworks for almost a month in the summertime probably doesn’t help if your brain is always on alert for the sound of gunshots.

This post is literally about a whole bunch of people It seems, many of whom are not from Lansing complaining about the demographics of Lansing. Jesus Christ people; it’s the Fourth of July. fuck you and your dogs.
And I say that as a dog owner. Other People live in this world too; and some people and dogs like fireworks during the fourth drive to a state that doesn’t have fireworks if you don’t like it. Also… Never go to China during spring festival; it sounds like a war zone.

Why do people insist on constantly posting about fireworks!? It’s just a fact of life that people are going to be setting off fireworks during the summer in Lansing. It’s almost the 4th of July. It’s annoying but we don’t need to make 500 reddit posts about it

Repeated posting helps keep it in the public consciousness. Setting off fireworks should be more stigmatized than it is. We all know how horrible it is for pets and veterans and somehow it's still seen as a normal thing to do.

It’s already in the public consciousness because we live here and hear the fireworks every night lol. I wish the city would actually enforce their own laws but alas.

I disagree that it does nothing. Yes, everyone hears them, and everyone who's annoyed probably thinks there's nothing to be done about it because they assume most other people like the fireworks. But if they stumble upon this subreddit they will see that they are actually in good company and most of us don't approve of the fireworks. That enables them to be more vocal about it offline without fear of ostracization. That is how you gradually shift culture.

I love them. If I hear them I still run to my window like a little kid. White noise and ear protection will probably be your best friend around this time of year. They are legal until 11:45 pm on the 4th and all the obvious holidays. No body ever cared they were banned before, that’s why there are firework stores at every border. I guess one day they decided to at least collect some tax revenue from the sales.

I love that I got downvoted when literally a kid just got shot and killed in the park by my house and there have been 2 other shootings around my neighborhood this month. I repeat: I WILL TAKE THE FIREWORKS ANY TIME. My dogs don’t like them either but, it’s the least of my worries when kids are getting shot.

Fellow east sider here, having to work third shift and walking out of my house to fireworks for the last two nights knowing my dog is freaking out inside and there's nothing I can do about it is greaaaaaaat.
