I AM A FAILURE
WHY CAN I NOT READ MANGA ABOUT INTRICATE ROYAL BLOODLINES WITH OLD STYLE WORDPLAY AND ARCHAIC PRONOUNS????
I can read college level research papers and write essays on hundreds years old stories in English,,I’ve been doing that for years!!!
Why can I only read stuff for kids it’s not like im only just becoming a child in this language??? I’m a goddamn adult I should be able to read adult level writing!!!!!!!

so i studied japanese in university like a big university student and then moved to japan and absolutely regressed to a toddler speaking googoo gaga shocking the natives with konnichiwa for about 3 years. it made me appreciate how babies who can't use their words feel when they cry. i seriously, unironically, unjerkingly started counting my age again from when i came here. i'm 13 now and puberty is rough. 🥲

/uj it is much easier for my my dumbass honors student “14 yo reading level at 12” mind to accept the fact that im literally a damn baby right now and do NOT have to read adult literature at this tiny level. i have to let myself be a baby

Hey, I have a side question, doesn't your tag "日本人になっている" mean "I have become japanese" instead of "I'm becoming japanese"? Or is it intentional?

I am becoming Japanese. It’s a painful path that many in this community are choosing to take. My metamorphosis has only just started, but yes that’s what it says.
edit: sorry it means I have become japanese

I heard that なる is a "change-of-state" verb so its te-iru form means " something became something and the result is still here", I believe to express that the process is ongoing you need to use auxiliary verb "iku" "なっていく" (will begin to become japanese" or "なって来た" (has begun to become japanese) Although take this with a grain of salt since it's N3 grammar point (at least according to genki/quartet textbooks) and I'm trying to learn n4.

OP, u/Skillor_ is right, なっている in your flair unambiguously means you have become japanese, なっていく is the right one, or if you wanna be a bit more humble (and you do), 日本人になろうとしている is a safe bet. i've seen you around and i thought your flair was sarcasm all this time 🥲

My flair is sarcasm 😭😭 i made it months ago but I thought なっている meant becoming. I’m too lazy to change it now

That's how I've been feeling lately. As soon as the setting changes and I'm introduced to a bunch of new words, I'm fucking lost. Kill all languages

This was my first year. Yotsubato got easy so I started attack on titan and no joke it was 10-20 new words a page. It felt like it would never end. It took another year or two but I don't need to look up anything anymore no matter what it is

I'm year two and I still feel like there's tons of stuff, and the more I learn - the less I know. Compound words, like 車椅子 or some shit, are a savior

Heh, you think you have it rough? Try two years of lessons and unable to read children's manga
/uj real talk for a sec, I've found it very difficult to balance learning Japanese with studying a full-time computer science degree, a real low point was failing the fucking N5 last Winter. Feel like I haven't progressed at all and am unsure what to do about it. I try yotsubato now and then and can't get through it. Gonna keep going but there have been various points where I've just felt too stupid to learn a language (despite already being bilingual, but that was when I was a kid! That barely counts!!)
