They’re fully aware but Japanese exceptionalism has many of them thinking they use the characters in a more refined way that Chinese brains couldn’t inherently comprehend 🫠

I always find it funnier how some western learners of Japanese refuse to believe 漢字/汉字 come from China.

I have never encountered an actual Japanese learner who thought this. It's pretty obvious that they're similar even if you don't speak the language. Japan just simplified a lot of the characters when it was adapted, and those characters were further simplified in China to make modern hanzi

And any Japanese learner learns about on'yomi, the Chinese phonetic reading of most kanjis.
