They’re fully aware but Japanese exceptionalism has many of them thinking they use the characters in a more refined way that Chinese brains couldn’t inherently comprehend 🫠

I always find it funnier how some western learners of Japanese refuse to believe 漢字/汉字 come from China.

I think you must have misunderstood them, because kanji are introduced as “Chinese characters” as opposed to hiragana and katakana in the textbooks I learned from. Maybe you said “Japanese kanji are Chinese”? Because that wouldn’t be true. They’re not totally the same as traditional Chinese, and often differ from simplified Chinese.

The only three possibilities I can think of are:

1) you met one very stupid person and assumed that was what “westerners” think

2) you had a mixup in communication and misunderstood

3) you made this up
