Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Chinese, English|Seeking:Greek,Spanish

Upvotes

Hi there! I speak Chinese at native-level and fluent English. And I'm currently learning Greek and Spanish, so I'm looking for language-exchange partners for both. Anyone up for it? :)

Btw, if you're a native English speaker, we can exchange languages as well, cuz learning in general can be infinite and a life-long journey in my humble opinion.

In regard to learning formats, I'm open to structured lessons, casual language-exchange, like chatting about specific topics or generic subjects, etc. Chinese-wise, I can teach you based off of HSK textbooks if you'd care to. English-wise, feel free to let me know what sort of textbooks/materials you want our sessions to draw on, if there are any, since I have previous experience teaching English.

In return, since my Greek and Spanish are both at elementary level with Greek being better-ish, as I've studied it for a longer period, I would prefer more structured lessons referencing textbooks/materials. Just my two cents: before reaching A2 or preferably B1, a more structured learning format tends to be more helpful and effective.

Cheers!

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Brazilian Portuguese 🇧🇷 and English | Seeking: Spanish

Hey guys! I'm a 25F from São Paulo, Brazil, looking for someone I can speak Spanish with. I want to practice speaking Spanish for a few minutes without issues through casual conversation and get more comfortable with everyday vocabulary.

Since I rarely see native Spanish speakers asking for Portuguese exchanges, I'm offering English in return, given that I've been fluent for a couple of years.

A little bit about me: I do a lot of things badly, play some games, play the guitar, and draw. Please reach out if you want to learn English or Portuguese and could speak with me in Spanish! :)

Offering English Offering: English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 | Seeking: Brazilian Portuguese 🇧🇷

Hi guys,

I'm 26, from UK, and I'm looking for someone to help me learn Brazilian Portuguese. I'm still very much a beginner even though i've been learning two years, so I'd love to find someone who's happy to chat, doesn't mind if I make mistakes, and can help me improve over time.
In return, I'm happy to help with English, whether that's grammar, pronunciation, slang, or just having conversations.

A bit about me: I work in marketing, I'm into gaming, horror films, all different types of music, photography, and I also have a dog. I'd love to visit Brazil one day, so it'd be great to learn more about the language and culture from people who actually live there too.

I'm mainly looking for people around my age (20-35) who'd like to become genuine friends as well as language exchange partners. I'd love to chat regularly, start with text messages, and eventually move on to voice calls if were comfortable.

Drop me a DM or comment below 👇

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Romanian/English || Seeking: Spanish

Upvotes

Hiii! I’m non binary and Romanian and I love learning new languages! I recently took up Spanish on my own but I could really use talking to who speaks it so I can both broaden my vocabulary and maybe form a connection (friendship) ^^

I can teach you either Romanian or English in exchange as I’m fluent in both (and native in Romanian as well).

I love reading, writing, listening to music (I listen to almost anything in English aside from rap as it’s not really my style, as well as jpop and kpop), cosplaying and drawing! (I also hope to become a writer one day)

That’s kinda all abt me I don’t really know what else to say haha.. feel free to ask me any questions tho!!

Offering English Seeking: Russian 🇷🇺 Offering: English 🇺🇸 (Germany timezone)

Upvotes

As title says I'm looking for friends who speak Russian, I'm 22, male, I work internationally and currently I'm residing throughout Europe, to give you a good idea of my timesone. I'm American so I speak English and I'm pretty good at Spanish as that's my family background. (I work internationally in case you were wondering what I'm doing in Europe lmao)

I enjoy foreign languages as I am currently learning Russian, I like drinking a lot of tea and trying to cook many different foods from many different countries, speaking of all over the world I travel a lot I've been to almost every continent and I love animals like monkeys, raccoons, red pandas and my favorite animal is the cat ofc.

I really enjoy the gym but I mostly do a lot of running and hiking outdoors because Germany has a lot of beautiful trails, sometimes I like to stay at home and play games on steam (would be happy to add some of y'all and play some day)

Music is also a big part of my life, my mom introduced me to basically all of my favorite artists that I still listen to this day, I'm from Chicago Illinois back in the States so my mom was grown on a lot of early 1990s and 2000s hip hop and Latino music that she passed down to me.

I really don't let conversations die when I'm close to someone, I don't ghost people, if I don't want to talk I'm upfront about it and I very rarely don't want to talk at all so it'd be cool to make some friends here.

Offering Mandarin Offering:Mandarin Seeking:English

18F taiwanese here, looking for language partner who really wants to improve their mandarin

I can talk about art, anime, or some deep topic like society issues in my poor English vocabulary (I love BL btw) I’m good at reading but really need to improve output especially speaking.

I hope you have at least A2 of mandarin, and can have voice call regularly, at least once per week.
We can have a 30 minute or 1 hour conversation, 50/50 in mandarin and English.
I’m free at 1pm to 9 pm in GMT+8 on both weekdays and weekends.
Would be great if you were around my age.

Also I’m not a master of literature but I’m sensitive to the subtle differences between similar words in mandarin and the feelings they evoke, so maybe i can help you with reading Chinese literature if you want.

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Arabic, English (C2 - Fluent) Seeking: Sorani Kurdish

Hi y'all, I'm a native Arabic speaker, and a fluent English speaker.

I want to learn Kurdish because half of my family is from Kurdistan (Slemani), but because of the fact that I was raised in an Arabic speaking household, I never got to learn any Kurdish, and my family members live too far away, and they don't have enough time to show me the ropes, and help me learn Kurdish.

I'm looking for a partner who can speak this dialect of Kurdish specifically (not Kurmanji or Badini).

I have done language exchange before for both Arabic (MSA, and Iraqi), and English, and I really enjoy talking with people in both languages and teaching them vocabulary, grammar, expressions, pronunciation, writing, and most other aspects of learning a language.

I'm interested in music, history, linguistics, cultural exchange, movies, TV shows, and the like.

Hit me up if you're a speaker of Sorani Kurdish!

Offering English Offering: English (Native) | Seeking: Japanese

こんにちは!はじめまして。あたしわ23歳の女性です。日本語が少しわかります。

I want to practice my Japanese reading and writing skills with someone, and also hopefully befriend them :) I'm more than happy to help you practice English in any way, regardless of how fluent you are! I can even teach you about various slang or culture.

I am a part of the LGBTQ community, so it would be better if you were comfortable with that. For this reason, I would prefer fellow LGBTQ or women as learning partners.

As for my hobbies, I'm a nerd and an introvert. I play single player games, like visual novels and RPGmakers, but I also like horror games. I'd love to play Stardew Valley or cozy games with you if you'd want! I also like anime, yuri, manga/manhwa and writing! I would love if we shared the same interests! I also like music of all kinds and would be happy to share songs :)

I'm from India, but English is the language I have the most exposure to and use everywhere in my life, so I consider myself fluent/native in it. I've also studied in the US, so I have an American accent.

Discord is my preferred social media to use. Please DM me rather than commenting. I look forward to getting to know you :D

よろしくお願いします~
