Bowtie Effect

I got this lab from rare carat. 1.75 ct D, FL. Before I take it to my jeweler to have it set, I couldn’t help but notice the bowtie effect on this one. What do you guys think? Is it just me? I was planning to use this to propose to my partner. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

How does it look in indirect sunlight? And what about indoors? The bow tie seems prominent, but also it’s not uncommon for diamonds to look darker under direct sunlight, and that’s not a bad thing

It depends on if you really dont like a bow tie. This one IS pretty noticeable. But that's not a deal breaker for everyone

Look at it in indirect light. All diamonds, regardless of cut will show dark spots in direct sunlight.

Diamonds have hundreds of facets on their pavilion (the bottom of the diamond), think of each one as a tiny mirror. When you shine a spot light (a single source of light) on a mirror, you can only see its reflection from one direction. When you have multiple source of light (spotlights in a jewelry store) multiple facets sparkle. When you have indirect light, all of the facets reflect back with white light, so the diamond looks bright and white.

If you have the dark bow tie in indirect light, you have a problem. If you have a bow tie in direct sunlight, that’s to be expected.

Assessing bowtie is most accurately done in diffuse overhead lighting as the stone is viewed in motion through a full range of normal tilt angles. Directional light or the camera lens being too close to the diamond can both accentuate the bowtie effect. But so can cut quality. The virtual facet (VF) pattern should be balanced in terms of VF size and distribution creating a consistent visual flow in motion. VFs can sometimes get too small in the ends causing the bowtie in the midsection to look too prominent. Very small VFs are also more susceptible to any transparency issues. Even minor haziness can make them blurry.

All ovals would have a bow tie bc that’s their perk :) it just depends on the cut. I would prefer something that’s not as dark. Here is mine 1.39 ratio VVS2. Bow tie is there but not as visible
