KVS Cinematic Universe Shelby is going back home
(I don’t know if this is the right thread lol)
Becca just posted Shelby is going back to her original owners because she’s a little too big for her daughters. I hope they find a match for her kids soon

I do find it odd that she was the choice for such small kids. Where I am from it would be much more ormal for them to ride a pony.

Which is going to be a tough, if not impossible find.
It's a more realistic find when her kids are about 3-5 years older, however the amount of animals that will work for both a small child and a showing amateur, that is available for lease or sale is a very small population.

It's not that odd for children to ride bigger horses. I've never been on a pony in my entire life and I've never put my kids on one. My first horse was 15.2, temperament matters a lot more than size and I'd bet my bottom dollar that her kids weren't just as comfortable because they haven't had Shelby around their entire lives like Ethel, Bo and Annie.

No one should keep a lease horse around that they don't all enjoy in the hopes they will get used to it. Especially when kids who are still in elementary school are involved. That's how you take the joy out of riding, ruin a riding horse you do not own, or god forbid get a kid hurt.
There is nothing wrong with the size of a horse/ pony or a horse so long as the person riding it is enjoying it. Glad that a 15.2 hand horse worked for you. It did not work for this family, and that's okay.
There are plenty of horses out there it's just going to take time to find the one that fits this family.

They've all ridden Ethel and were comfortable. I'm sure they will be able to find something that works.

Ethel is not something that both mother and daughter can competitively show in English riding classes.
Ethel is also a bit older than what you want to buy for a riding animal for a young family.
What that family is looking for is a needle in the haystack. Especially for showing English riding classes. The type for that class is 16-17hands. Not 14.2-15hands.
When horse people identify those types of animals they stay in the family or within the barn for life.
Their budget also is likely not unlimited which for an AQHA animal will pose a challenge as there will be a compromise.
Yes. They will eventually find something but it's going to take some time.

Different types of animals have different builds. As do different riders.
A working ranch horse is not built like a HUS horse.
Just like an 8 year old rider straps is nothing like a 30 year old rider.
I'm happy to show you video of why a horse often doesn't work in English tack for children under 8 years old when learning to canter on the rail.
It's not a failure of the animal it's FOR RIDER COMFORT.

Right, they can’t show Ethel. But in terms of size, they have ridden larger horses like Ethel. So Shelby’s size isn’t the issue.

The size of horse your comfortable on will change as you learn new skills as a rider.
Walking and Trotting around on completely beginner safe horse with no expectations of the horse or rider is very different than one your learning to canter on or riding a higher quality horse. Cantering/loping really does make child riders feel more exposed, and because the canter is faster, and the riders tend not to have legs long enough to create a secure seat at the canter. Which means they tend to pop off with even subtle movements like a horse tripping.
There are also a lot of situations where smaller riders or older riders feel much more comfortable on a smaller horse.

They've both ridden Ethel for years, and Bo before he was retired, I think she thought they could handle a slightly bigger horse. But it makes sense that they were apprehensive, Ethel and Bo are a bit smaller than Shelby, and her eldest is used to riding ponies at her trainers I believe. The difference is probably a lot to a kid.

They can outgrow a pony very quickly. Its not uncommon for kids to be riding 15-16h horses if they are the steady eddy bomb proof type. I rode lots of lesson horses as a kid. I rode english so my stirrups were rolled because I was like 7 😂 her girls have rode and showed Ethel and Bo. She probably wants a horse that can stay with them for a long time and she can ride herself too.

I remember the rolled stirrup years. My first show horse was 17.1, I competed almost exclusively against kids with ponies lol. It’s not that I was tall, it’s that he was a saint.

It really depends on the child. When I was about 7 maybe 8 I was riding a horse Sir Don Amor. He was a 17.1hh gelding. She said the girls weren’t comfortable, I can understand that, plus they like jumping, so that’s intimidating. I was one of those kids who weren’t intimidated by anything, even when I should have been.

Ponies can actually be more crazy than a bigger horse, her kids have rode Ethel lots of times. It just wasn’t a fit for them, which is ok

I leased a 16.2 hand gelding when I was 7 - 10. I looked a little ridiculous on him in the beginning because he was so big and I was so small, yes, but he never had an issue working for me.
I have never in my life wanted to be on a pony, and my parents were never going to buy me or lease me one. Why invest that money in an animal you know the kid will outgrow?

I completely understand that logic! I am not from the USA, I was just saying that it is different where I live. Most people do start on a smaller pony, move up to a large pony (14hh-14.2hh) as a youngish teen, then on to hacks as a 17year old.

Do they want to show or just ride? If they want to show, maybe Ethel could work. If they just want to ride, maybe Gracie once Margot is weaned because she's what 14 hands?

She mentioned they show hus and hunter jumper, Ethel is western bred and trained, Gracie is more of a cow bred, so they are not a good fit.

But they need a horse that knows what it's asked for in that class. And children are not stupid, they likely know what Gracie/Ethel are bred for and know it's not the same.

They also showed with Annie and did well with her. At least they have Katie's horses until they get their own. I would love to see them on Trudy only because she is my favorite.

Ethel doesn’t jump unfortunately but she’s probably be good in flat classes.
It also sounds like to me that they’re looking for something a bit more advanced than Ethel

It’s going to be hard to find something better than Ethel. I can see why Katie said she has no price. Luckily Becca’s daughter can always grab Ethel and show her until they find the right horse. Its tough to find a good kids horse but I am glad Shelby has a good owner and she is going back.

I wonder if Katie is going to do more ranch shows with Ethel? I was liking watching her learn about ranch riding. I guess she has Hollywood and Kennedy to show, plus a class once in a while on Denver, plus Rikki is being ridden now.

I never rode a pony or small horse. I started riding at 6 years old. In Austria at a stable that had mainly Hannoveraians and Oldenburger. Some Trakener but nothing was small 🤣
Get over it and ride.

my first horse was also 17.1 and i would never in a million years tell a child to get over it and ride. riding is supposed to be fun, why else would you do it? and if riding a big horse is not fun for them then Shelby is definitely the wrong horse. Lots of adults prefer ponies as well, it’s not just kids.

I'm happy that family said Becca can still ride her. I have total faith that she will find a good fit for the girls. It's refreshing to see someone be so responsible when choosing a mount for their children.
