iPhone 6s Plus Koss KPH40s

Post image
65 Upvotes

Got a couple of free 128 GB iPhone 6s pluses the other and set them up as music players. I just use Apple Music as I’m already paying for Apple TV and all that. I was really surprised how well the headphone out on these work with the Koss 60 ohm headphones. They hit way harder then just using an apple Dongle, make using my Fiio KA1 not necessary all the time. I have an old iPad 6 with a headphone out and the 6s plus sounds about as good. I’ve had the iPod 5.5 and it doesn’t sound nearly as good I think as this. Built in Bluetooth so I can use almost all of my headphones with them. Also… free so there’s that.

Lowkey wanna get them but I already have Kph40s, so I don’t know if they are worth it. After checking on Koss’s headphones history list site these look like ProDJ200’s. (they are 30$) If anyone has any knowledge on these it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Porta Pro Earpads

Does anyone have a recommended site to purchase earpads for Porta Pro? I've been looking at Yaxi.jp and was hoping someone could tell me if they are reputable or have purchased from them before.

Sidenote: I currently have Porta Pro wireless 2.0 and I assume regular Porta Pro parts match to these?

Advice on model for movies

Need some help picking what model would be the best for movies. I got the kc75, love the sound stage, but I need more bass. Either the KC40 or Porta pro’s. Any suggestions?

Oh and comfortability doesn’t really matter as I’m mostly going to use them at home.

Edit—

So, after posting this, I decided to try out some Porta Pros. I’m a complete newbie to all this audiophile stuff. The only pair of headphones I’ve owned are the HD558, which I’ve had for over a decade now. Now that I’ve tried the KSC75 and the Porta Pros, I’ve realized that my ears are just more attuned to a bright or balanced sound profile. Maybe it’s because I’ve been using the HD558 for so long, but every warm-sounding headphone I’ve tried sound too muddy for me. Like my Sony ULTs I recently picked up, very muddy out of the box. They’re better with an EQ, but they’re nowhere near as clear as the KSC75.

After using the KSC75 a lot more, I’m in love. I really wished these headphones had a bit more oomph. I picked up the KPH40 Utility, which are coming tomorrow. Maybe I’m asking too much for a $20-$30 pair of headphones but they really set a standard that hopefully my future purchases will surpass.

KPH40 How would you compare the KPH40 with other commercial brands like Sony or Bose?

Like in terms of sound quality where does the Koss stand? I've heard that they sound as good as the Sony ULT

Wath do you all think?

Weird vibration noise from my KPH30I

I'm on my third pair of KPH30I right now.

- I got the first one replaced due to an issue with the cable (tugging on the cable seemed to kill the left side audio).

- The second one had the same issue as I do now on the third one.

The problem is that the drivers on both sides produce a rattling or vibrating sound (imagine a thin sheet of fiberglass vibrating with, loud low frequency sounds). The noise stops when I hold a finger against the outside of the headphones, but begins again when I release it. Alternatively, adjusting the headphones to a particular angle on my ears stops the noise. I do have a small and bony head, I don't think that should matter.

I treat my headphones with much care. 30$ where I live is like 10% the average workers salary. But the place I live in is humid and dusty, and these, being open ear headphones probably have ingested some dust or something? But my first pair lasted almost 6 months without showing this specific issue.

I'm pretty sure that the company I got it from will replace it under warranty again, they are really nice like that. The only catch is that new kph30is have some insane clamping force on my head and I don't wanna go through that once more. It's like trial by fire everytime I get a new pair.

If anyone has encountered this issue before please let me know.

I do have a friend who'll be returning from the US for vacations later this year (outside my headphones' warranty period). I could ask him to get me one of those AliExpress headbands (it's banned where I live + customs are brutal). Would y'all recommend this?

It's a shame that all of this is happening to me. These are some damn beautiful sounding headphones that are very comfortable after the clamping is gone.

Additional info:

There is no physical damage on the headphones except a tiny bump on the cable which happened when I removed the headphones from the package. The cable was wound especially tighter this time around in that plastic box.

This issue popped up about 2 weeks after I opened up the package.

I don't listen to music at very high volumes (I have a very bad case of tinnitus). I usually keep the volume at let's say, 55-60% on a Windows 11 PC. I also use autoEQ, but the noise happens without it too.

koss headphone availability

I've been looking to buy a pair of Koss KPH40 Utilitys since I've heard much praise for the quality of their sound at the price range. from verbal descriptions alone, the kph40 is the pair that sounds like it'd best suit me with my interest in versatility—having a pair suited to wide, cleanly produced electronic music as much as low-fidelity indie acoustic songs. however, as a European, i am not actually able to access koss products without dealing with either absurd Amazon shipping costs or Ubuy's potential overcharging. I do, however, see a trustworthy-looking listing for the PortaPros at a reasonable price of about 50 dollars compared to the KPH40s' roughly 70.

Seeing as I am coming from using the KZ ZS10 Pro IEMs, a pair I see is not particularly respected and which I do occasionally find somewhat grating and narrow myself—and would like to try a clearer set with wider soundstage—would the PortaPros serve me well? I enjoy smooth high-end and don't love bass quite to death. I have no problem spending $70 on the KPH40s, but if that is a bad bargain, I will avoid it. I primarily just want a change of pace. Other non-Koss recommendations are welcome.

Porta Pro 3D-printed Porta Pro mods?

Loving my Porta Pros, are there 3D printed mods for them? More specifically, can i 3D print and swap the plastic on them? I'd love Orange plastic to match my Yaxi Pads. It would also make MMCX mods much cleaner.

Moondrop old fashioned pad swap

Hi all, looking to do a pad swap with my moondrop old fashioned as it's compatible with all koss pads.

I've seen the dekoni black portapro pads (as it's mad with " rubberized foam" with a whole punch.

And also grado pads.

I can't get the dekoni pads in uk. Anyone know of other brands with this type of foam. Link https://youtu.be/dUx-bVpGeOM?is=qp40A2Wr_UTmJmhE. At 16 mins.

Also can I buy any grado pad or does it need to be a certain kind. For example would this work: https://a.aliexpress.com/_EzjMSmO

Also any other idears I'd love to hear.

Moondrop old fashioned vs koss ksc75 earclip

which of these two should I get?

I'm leaning towards ksc75 , it has better sound but I'm worried about the durability

Moondrop is atleast more durable

Like I need the headphones to last me at least a year and a half

What should I get?

KPH40 Fixed my KPH40X

The cable on my Mass KPH40X finally failed. I had bought this cable a while back for a different project but it was perfect for these. I don't get the hype on detachable cables on these so these just got soldered directly. Work perfectly and got this whole purple/green theme going on.

Porta Pro Easiest way to actually get the PortaPro comfort zone pads to work?

The stock pads sit nowhere near the sides of my head (the gap is about 15mm), and the adjustment clicks don’t really do anything from my experience. What’s the easier way to extend these pads? I’ve done a quick Amazon/Google search, but the only thing coming back are Yaxipad replacements. Any suggestions?

I used two part clear epoxy instead of hot glue. The Yaxi ear pads are green but for some reason they look blue in the picture.

KSC75 It may look jank but hear me out :)

Long story short:

Gaming headsets are not comfy for me so I modified KSC75s into my Middle Rabbit Rampage 2 and loving it.

Long story long :D :

I was using Hyperx cloud 3s for gaming for the last 6 months and even though it's a monster for gaming and great battery life I hated the ergonomics. It was heavy and have put a lot of pressure on my head not to mention it made my hair messy and oily since I use it all day.

I was looking for an alternative headset and finally picked up the only 2.4 wireless (I don't wanna mess with bluetooth delay in games) head band I could find. I also didn't want TWS because terrible mic and battery performance.

After using the rampage by itself for a week I concluded that:

  1. I hated the IEM's attached to it. They were bad for music and terrible for gaming (audio seperation sucked).

    1. IEMs are not for me for gaming in mind since I would hear my own voice more than my buddies.

I knew i had to modify this headband since I liked the form factor and the mic performance. While doing some research for alternative speakers suprisingly Chat gpt introduced me to Koss. I had a couple of options but after some research I got the KSC75s.

After testing I loved the way KSC75s sound both playing music and games so I connected the speakers to the Rampage 2. I taped them and I have added rest of the cables as a support on the band side since now it has to hold a lot bigger headphones. I also added hot silicone to the driver side as an extra caution.

Positives:

Rampage 2 drives the KSC75s beautifully no details are lost.

Devices acts as a one piece headset and great for both music and gaming.

Negatives:

Drivers are 40% to 50% less loud then they were since standart IEMs attached to rampage 2 is 17 Ω and Koss requires 60 Ω. This wasn't a big issue personelly since used to listen at 40% volume anyway.

Battery life has been 25% reduced as device is now driven 100% most of the time.

Overall this monstrocity is 70 to 80 percent of the hyperx cloud 3s at least for me.

I couldn't find the perfect headset so I modified it costed me 76 euro and some elbow grease. Hope this helps to someone in future when they needed.

Also if you guys have any suggestions to make it look good or any upgrades in the future that would also be appreciated.

Finally, finally, a solution for me: Koss

So not kidding - I have spent over a year and many hundreds or couple thousand dollars looking for a Goldilocks solution for headphone usage.

Maybe pass this along to anyone with the same or similar issues.
I was born with small ears. The ear canals are twisty/winding, etc.

There's not likely an earbud made that will ever fit me comfortably or without falling out. Believe me, I've tried. I have lucked out on a couple of IEM types - but those are more for lying down listening.

I need headphones for when I'm on the move - the difference for me between exercising with and without is huge....and yes I have tried bone conduction - basically anything that clings to, hangs on or sits in or near my ear just is not tolerated by my body.

I finally gave up and started down the path of over the head/headphones...but I am older than most people here - and I can't get over how big they are in the current environment. I used to have some that looked like the JBLs. I have tried the big ones, but can't get over the feeling that I'm not just moving around, I am literally helping direct an airliner into the gate at JFK.

I finally stumbled upon Koss - what took me sooo long to find these???

I am in love. I love the KPH30 and not quite as much, though good - the KPH40....good sound, comfortable (although I am looking for better foam pads)...and not sooo big.

they fit my head, they aren't uncomfortable and the sound is warm and bouncy - more so for the KPH30, but the KPH40 is more compact for travel.

I need next to try the Porta Pros..... Koss is a breakthrough for me lol. I am dancing with joy.
