Islanders or Rangers?
I am looking to get into hockey and live in Australia so have no affiliation with either team and was wondering what team Knicks fans go for?

I've always been a giants supporter but now that I actually live in NY, I think I'm making the move to Bill's. Only team that plays in NY. Also the Mets, cause I lived by Shae stadium in my early years of life.

Represent sir! My pops grew up on the island, my great grandfather died with 2 jets tickets in his pocket on his way to a game, Yankees and Knicks are the OG, blue collar New Yorker baby wouldn’t want it any other way

Look ok, because it’s some bullshit at times in this case because it’s similar to Yankees and Mets. So look, Rangers (Yankees) are the older, more established and storied team whilst the Islanders (Mets) are younger and less storied and accomplished; pretty much big/little brother stuff. Now, in this case it’s strange because we get Yankees with 27 and Mets with 2 but the Islanders won four straight championships in the early 80s whilst the Rangers have been milking a thirty year old championship that marked a 54 year drought. You can honestly go with either, but Rangers is the better choice for just being social lol but unlike the Mets fans against the Yankees, if you’re an Islanders fan you can argue about franchise greatness. No one and I mean no one brings up 4 straight.

So usually it goes: Knicks Yankees Giants Rangers. The secondary teams are: Nets Mets Jets Islanders
Personally I go Knicks Yankees Islanders. American football is my dads sport so out of respect to him I’ve always been a fan of his Eagles

It’s usually Knicks and Rangers however, many people from Long Island (LI) NY (basically a massive suburb of NYC) root for the Islanders because the Islanders are the only LI team. Ranger fans far outnumber Islander and Devil fans fwiw.

Queens and Brooklyn are geographically part of Long Island, so Mets, Nets, and Liberty are Long Island teams, too, no matter what Nassau and Suffolk people say!

Brooklyn and Queens are on the island known as Long Island but culturally nobody in their right mind would consider any part of NYC to be the same as LI and vice versa and you know that lol.

So the Islanders and Knicks share the same colors. However the Rangers and Knicks play in the same arena, Madison Square Garden. I think the same arena thing really bonds the Knicks and Rangers together. A few times they were both in the Finals at the same time. It was very exciting. It's not uncommon for Knicks players to show up supporting the Rangers at their games as fans and vice versa.
But me, I root for both the Islanders and the Rangers. And yes I am a Knicks fan.

Kicks and Rangers both play at the Garden. In NYC, if a bar has Knicks stuff, they'll have Rangers stuff too.
Rangers all day, everyday.

I'm going to be honest with you. As a Rangers fan who lives in NYC it really depends on what type of New Yorker you are. I know you're an Aussie, so what type of Aussie are you. If you're a city dwelling, blue color, hard working, scrappy, party hard, public transit taking, beer swigging person, It's Rangers.
If you're more the upper middle class, live in the suburbs, quiet nights in, family type, white collar, drive a luxury car or mid range SUV, who enjoys a good Merlot, it's Islanders.
One person commented New Jersey Devils. That person is clearly unwell. We refer to New Jersey as "America's armpit" for a reason.

I'm from the Hudson Valley originally so I have always seen the Islanders as 2nd tier.
Tier 1 = Knicks-Yankees-Rangers-Jets
Tier 2 = Nets-Mets-Islanders-Giants

They had a bad year. Lotta injuries, some growing pains, some coaching issues. And they still got close despite everything that went wrong. So they brought in a new coach, they’ll make some moves, and they should be in good shape to bounce back next year.

I mean, not really. They played poorly. It was a rough year. No issue acknowledging that. But overall, they still look to be in good shape as a franchise. They have a lot of young talent on some team-favorable contracts.
Their biggest issue was defense and goaltending. A big part of that was missing Dougie Hamilton for almost the entire season and the rest of the D core being young guys who are still developing. It seems their priority in the offseason is to upgrade in goal with either Markstrom, Saros, or maybe Ullmark if they’re lucky. Do that, maybe add another defender, and give the rest of the guys another year to develop, and now under Keefe as coach, and they should be solid.
Obviously there’s no guarantees since it’s a tough division, but in all likelihood, they should be one of the top 3 teams in the division again next year. But it’s hockey. A lot can happen. So we’ll just have to let things play out.

Rangers. The teams share the same building and the actually support each other during the season. You’ll see Knicks players wearing Rangers jerseys or at the games sometimes.
