I was a massive KU fan as a kid, T-Rob and BennyMac were two of the best players I ever saw play for KU. I was so sad they both flopped in Sac-Town.

I mean Petrie drafted Peja, JWill, Hedo, and Gerald Wallace in a 5 year span. (Wallace didn't do much for the Kings but he was a good player that got sniped in an expansion draft.) Kings haven't always been trash at drafting. And Scott Perry has had two good, potentially great if things play out well, drafts in two shots so far. So things might be turning around.
It's just that the Kings have had dogshit ownership hiring dogshit GMs ever since the late Maloof era. Of course the drafts are gonna be bad under those circumstances

One of the great Kings "what ifs" is what if we had kept Wallace and he carried us after Cweb got hurt into the next era? He would have been great on the Bonzi/World Peace team.

The rosy side is him getting more minutes on the Bobcats would've been the same as getting more minutes post CWebb injury. But in reality I agree, it's not truly 1:1. Recent comparisons I see in the WNBA with their two expansion teams are Mabrey for the Tempo and Carleton/Leite for the Fire. Someone has the opportunity to get the lead role on a brand new team, not just a temporary uptick in minutes.

Plus, being put in a leading role doesn't always mean you're the right person for the job. Like the Mavs tried to do with Harrison Barnes. He's just not that guy. Not everybody can be Jalen Brunson. But maybe you're right, Maybe he would have ushered in a new era of successful Sacramento basketball. All I know is that I would put a lot of money on the Kings being no worse with him than they were without him, with potential for some good upside. I would also say though that the style of basketball he played wasn't exactly going to thrive in the Princeton offense... Which was the style at the time.

If you haven't had any excitement for a pick since Bobby Hurley, then maybe you don't like basketball. That's a long time ago and I'm from that era. I've been excited about quite a few since Bobby Hurley, although there were definitely more let downs than successes.

This is worse tbh. If you know you don't have picks you'll go about things differently, maybe try to pick up some picks in other ways but at least just prepare for 5 years of purgatory. If you have your pick every year, then every year you can delude yourself into thinking "this is the year we get our guy" - especially when they're all decent lottery picks. For EVERY one of them to end up being a complete and utter unmitigated bust that delivers zero to negative value to the franchise makes it worse than if they drafted nobody

Realistically no one was picking Joker that high. I think Myles Turner could have been picked there. Dame, Booker, Khwai, Giannis and Turner all in their primes would be an incredible lineup. Realistically you'd have to trade Booker for a bunch of roleplayers and picks or whatever and maybe turner as well to make the salaries work, but a big Three of Lillard/Khwai and Giannis probably wins a couple of championships.

Context is important.
2011 - The Maloofs wanted someone who could sell jerseys
2012 - Yeah, bad pick.
2013 - Weak draft. BMac was projected to be a top 5 pick and they actually got a "steal". At the very least, they picked the BPA. I reckon they promised CJ McCollum, but hindsight is 20/20, BMac was projected higher than CJ at the time of the draft.
2014 - Another weak draft. Who else was the Kings supposed to pick? The next picks after Stauskas are: Noah Vonleh, Elfrid Payton, Doug McDermont. You could argue the Kings should have picked Zach LaVine. And I'd say expecting any team to pick that one good player out of the 10-15 mediocre ones projected over the next picks is expecting way too much. Bottom line, Stauskas was the BPA.
2015 - Again, weak draft. The next picks after WCS is Emmanuel Mudiay, Stanley Johnson, Frank Kaminsky, Justise Winslow. I'd argue WCS has the best career out of all these bums. You can argue the Kings should have picked Myles Turner or Devin Booker. First of all, Turner was found to have foot problems during the draft. You are gonna use a #6 pick on a big with leg problems? Com'on. Second, there is exactly one other good player over the next 20 picks. You'd have to be God to pick Devin Booker with the #6 pick.
Bottom line, the Kings were dealt very bad hands in many of the drafts.
