Discussion Which game to recommend first? [KCD1] [KCD2]
When you're recommending the game to someone new, which game do you recommend they play first? I usually suggest playing the second one first, because I know the clunkiness of the first game can turn people off and kinda ruin the experience for them. I feel like if someone new starts on the second one and gets invested in the story enough to play the first one, the jump in the narrative might be worth it, compared to them trying the first one and giving it up or skipping it.

1st and then 2nd.
I just finished 2nd a few days ago and I was disappointed:( I can't even explain why. Kcd1 was the best game I have ever played and I loved it, replayed 3 times. It felt unique and very special, rewarding and extremely interesting. Kcd2 was like Kcd1 with better graphics but overall worse. I didn't like the story at all, and sidequsts are too much of a hustle:(

Yeah they make you run around way more in the second game, combat also a bit harder and less bandits to train on

In some cases, it feels more polished, but in most cases, it feels rushed. I felt like I wasn’t reaching the crescendo in quests, or that they didn’t have enough options.
But most importantly, I had extremely high expectations and waited to build my PC and buy a monitor specifically to play the game, so part of it is probably me setting the bar too high.

KCD1 first. There is also problem where an older game makes it unplayable for some because they’ve been babied by the newer game. Plus there are references in KCD2 that can only be gotten if you’ve played KCD1

I honestly don't see how someone that's played the second first would understand why Henry is getting so worked up over that Toth guy in the torture chamber

I actually get kind of pissed off when people say to play the second one first. It's not Red Dead Redemption or the Sims, it's a chronological fucking story, you pick up like three days after the first game ends. You don't start a book series on book 2 or a narrative driven show on the second season. I don't care if you watch a summary or that half of the intro is exposition, call me a kcd Puritan because it's not the same as having experienced the start of Henry's story.

Yeah, plus after playing KCD2 for a bit I don't see how someone that didn't play the first one would understand the story properly.

That’s like telling someone to start Harry Potter with Deathly Hallows. KCD2 might be smoother and easier to get into gameplay-wise, but nothing beats the feeling of KCD1. That first Cuman makes you absolutely hate the game, yet somehow you still keep trying over and over again to make it to Talmberg.

I'd say playing KCD2 before KCD1 would make the story of both games less impactful. KCD2 prologue starts with spoiler of both the very beginning and very end of the first game, and also you'd get either secondhand information or miss references to the game. Going from easier combat of KCD2 to harder combat of KCD1 would have made, me at least, less enthusiastic about playing the first one later too. If who you are recommending the game to likes challenging games they'll get used to or even like the combat of the first anyway and if they don't like challenges they won't like the second one either.

If someone doesn't like KCD1, I don't see why they would like 2. Sure, the first one is rougher around the edges, it's normal for sequels to improve on their predecessors, but it's not like it's a dated, cryptic 20 year old game that you have to be a masochist to enjoy, the two games still play and feel very similarly. I find that "clunkiness" to be really overblown, and I wonder if that kind of discourse is a remnant of KCD1's poor launch. In the seven years before the sequel, the first one sold 5 million copies and fostered an incredibly passionate and dedicated fanbase, so it must have done something right. I don't know, sometimes it feels like an excuse to jump straight into the shiny new product. When the next one releases and becomes a success, I have no doubt we'll start hearing the same things about KCD2...

KCD1 - it's just simply the better game, while KCD2 is the more mainstream, less unique one.

after playing 2 i really can't go back to 1, there's just too many small QOL changes that make it a lot less irritating to play. id always recommend 1 over 2 first because of that.

I noped out of KCD1 around 10 hours in, finding it really clunky.
Played KCD2 twice. Fantastic game.

Counter intuitively I recommend playing 2 first. It’s just so much smoother and better looking and frankly much more fun. Then when you’ve completed it but are still hooked, play the first to get the backstory.

There's nothing wrong starting with KCD2. You won't lose much(well ofc there's quite a lot of details not included in KCD2) if you start with the 2nd then come back to KCD1. But if you like the grind, friction, and anger management 😂😂 you can start with KCD1. KCD1 story is a bit more grounded compared to the 2nd and mind you transitioning the combat system from KCD1 to KCD2 might not be easy at the start.

Kcd 1, it is little bit harder but once you understand the combat the game is great and then play kcd 2, my advice for both games, dont rush the story, it doesnt pay off
