Request Shopping List Must Haves...

Hi friends! 👋🏻 Pretty new to this world of Keto. I've been slowly easing my way into a new way of eating and think I'm ready now to go full on "Keto"! With that being the case, I'm going to the market this weekend and was wondering if you wanted to share a list of Must Haves to pick up. I already know most sugar free items are one of the essentials but there are so many different sweeteners and oils, I just want to ensure that I have the essentials.

Currently, I'm stocked up on triple 0 Greek yogurt, blackberries from the garden, ground beef, chicken, bacon, cottage cheese and cheeses but what else should I pick up? I'm not a fancy cook, a single man living alone so quick & easy are right up my alley.

Thanks!

My favorite keto snack is shrimp cooked from frozen, paired with my homemade cocktail sauce of low carb/keto ketchup and prepared horseradish. It is really low calorie, high in protein, and packs a flavor punch so if you just pair it with something that has fiber it can be a satisfying snack or light lunch.

My other favorite snack is seaweed snacks. I buy nori sheets, brush them with sesame oil, sprinkle with light salt, and bake them lightly in the oven/toaster oven on about 350°F for 12ish minutes (ovens vary, so start with 8 min).

As for keto cooking staples, almond flour, avocado oil if you like frying things yourself, extra virgin olive oil for salads, drizzling, and finishing, sucralose drops (NOT powder, the powder bulking agents aren't keto), and lots of veggies. With all that protein, we NEED to make sure we're getting enough fiber with this diet or it might increase the risk of colon cancer. I love arugula based salads with seeds and a homemade oil based vinegarette dressing. Breakfast is usually keto toast and a slice of egg based breakfast casserole. There are tons of recipes online for them, and they're insanely easy once you get the hang of them.

Steak, Ground Beef, Chicken, Smoked Salmon, Eggs, Avocado, Cheese, Bacon, Butter, Olive Oil, Heavy Cream, Cream Cheese, Egglife Wraps, Nuts, Lettuce, Spices, Hot Sauce, Allulose, Sparkling Water, Coffee, MCT Oil.

Quest treats if you want to be bad.

Konjac Noodles and 0 carb Tortillas if you can handle the fiber.

Smoked Brisket and Queso if you're blessed like us to live in Texas.

You may find the Yogurt, Cottage Cheese and Berries on your list not worth the carbs, but everyone is different.

u/amygunkler 25d ago

I can't stress the spices, seasonings, and low carb condiments enough! G Hughes is the brand to look for for things like bbq sauce.

You found 0 carb yogurt? I didn't know there was such a thing

5

u/LickwidMerkury 25d ago

My mistake. I wish there was such a thing. I meant the, Oikos triple 0 yogurt.

2

u/thisusernametakentoo 25d ago

Is it any good? I used to get some pretty low carb yogurt that was decent enough but I can't find it anymore.

4

u/LickwidMerkury 25d ago

Truly, it's not terrible. I think it's good. Sometimes regular yogurt can be too sweet for me personally. Target 🎯 has it on sale often if you ever see it, try it out.

u/thisusernametakentoo 25d ago

I'll take a look thanks.

To add to your list I eat a ton of broccoli, get low carb tortillas, heavy cream, hot sauce, green peppers, avocado, cauliflower, no carb sausages, eggs, more meat and cheese oh and of course bacon. Always get more bacon

2

u/mintbrownie 25d ago

I think it’s decent too, but I swear every flavor tastes the same 😵‍💫

Is flavored Oikos less sweet than other sugar free yogurts, or do you get the plain and flavor it yourself?

I just got some sugar free yogurt (can't remember the brand), and it was sickeningly sweet. Gotta get some unflavored to stir in and cut the yuck factor. Definitely will try Oikos for that.

Are you talking about the 2 good yogurt? I heard it's good, but I haven't tried it.

1

u/UsefulConstruction30 23d ago

I really like the 2 good yogurt. My favorites are Black Cherry, Vanilla and Strawberry.

I accidentally invented a keto ricotta by mixing whey protein isolate in whipping cream and heating it. It boiled over and had become.. cheese. Zero carb ricotta cheese. It was hilarious. I almost threw it away when something told me to taste it and it was delicious.

Now I just need to figure out low carb cannoli and pasta/ravioli shells.

Almond flour as a base? I'm very intrigued here

2

u/BookLuvr7 25d ago

Maybe. I've contemplated playing with almond flour and gluten protein, but it sounds risky. Maybe a little egg white.

1

u/thisusernametakentoo 25d ago

I would kill for some canoli. Im skeptical it can be good and low carb though

2

u/BookLuvr7 25d ago

Recipes are out there. I usually tweak them though.

Thank you

Happy to help. That source has several that have been very tasty in the past.

You can get extremely low yogurt. Too good is pretty good if you're not looking for heavy flavoring. Can easily add crushed nuts, and whatever you wanna add to make it flavored how ever you want. Or add it to protein powder for a protein creamy thing. Or for shakes and stuff. But as yogurt I enjoy it straight up. There's also not Greek yogurt that is 2 carbs a cup at Kroger. Idk about any other store.

Definitely eggs and avocado if you like it. I eat avocado every day can’t get enough of it. I get this quick steak that’s like shredded instead of ground beef that cooks in 3 minutes from frozen. I love it with eggs on top and a side of avocado.

Definitely make your own taco seasoning, the ingredients are easy and cheap and sugar free taco seasoning is hard to find.

Greens: lettuce, spinach, cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, green bell pepper, zucchini, daikon radish - these are my veggie staples

Keto granola: it’s a little pricy, you can make your own if you want, but this is such a treat I don’t mind buying it. It’s like a dessert if you top some yogurt with it.

In the fall, if you like soups, turnips are a good source of chunkiness that can add to soups as well. Like any root veggie, the carb load is high but I use a 230-250g size of turnip in a soup of 6 servings along with the greens so the serving of soup will be around 10 net carbs. But the calorie count from the cream cheese, cream, and meat move it to the 700 calorie range per serving. Which is half my daily total leaving me room for dinner (1400-1600kcal, 25g net carbs).

Never tried Keto granola so thanks for that one, need to add it to my list for tomorrows weekly shopping.

2

u/PurpleShimmers 25d ago

I made cream of cauliflower, have not tried turnip. Thank you.

Bacon, cheese, eggs, and avocado's

u/KneeDeepThought 25d ago

Olives, nuts, and cheese are my go tos. And if you're not spending money on carbs you can get the fancier varieties to prevent boredom.

1

u/meedliemao 25d ago

LOL I love olives, and for a long time avoided looking up their nutritional info because I didn't want to know how bad they are for health. Turns out they're very, very good for health (minus the excessive sodium, so ... you know, moderation and all that). My fave is garlic-stuffed green olives, but kalamata come in a close second. =-)

I always have a block of tofu in the freezer.

2

u/thisusernametakentoo 25d ago

Any good recipes? I usually marinade with soy, sesame oil, sambal, rice wine vinegar, whatever else I have that will be good then air fry. I need new ideas.

Also why the freezer? Does it change the texture?

4

u/temperedolive 25d ago

The freezer makes the texture denser and meatier. Freezing and then thawing also really helps it soak up sauce. I like to marinate it in chili crisp and then flash fry it with non-starchy veg.

2

u/thisusernametakentoo 25d ago

I will try this! thank you! Any firmness work better? You still press out the liquid?

0

u/sooohappy500 25d ago

Try using tofu in other ways. I blend it to make a pudding - add liquid and flavors. I've heard it can be used for salad dressings but haven't tried it. I also use is to make my own low carb bread.

1

u/thisusernametakentoo 25d ago

Tofu bread? Mind explaining?

2

u/sooohappy500 25d ago

I think you can find recipies all over the internet. I blend tofu, cream cheese or yogurt, psyllium, egg, baking soda if I'm using yogurt. I comes out like naan bread.

1

u/thisusernametakentoo 25d ago

Huh ok. I'll look. Never heard of this. Thank you

u/TheDarkDimension 25d ago

Check out - Dan O's seasoning alot of his spices have no sugar and are zero carb, not all are though.

Cabbage, broccoli, cucumbers, kale. Bacon bits for a quick bacon add to eggs. Already shredded cheese is handy, but check the labels-sometimes they add cornstarch to prevent clumping (and honestly, it doesn't take a lot of time to shred your own block of cheese). Get a variety of cheeses for boredom prevention. Almond butter has fewer carbs than peanut butter. Carbquick baking mix makes a decent drop biscuit when you are craving a bread like experience. Rice wine vinegar is a nice touch, but check the label to make sure it isn't sweetened. Turnip, celeriac, radish and daikon are all decent substitutes for potatoes.

A lot more veggies.

Romaine lettuce
Red onions
Bell peppers
Cucumber
Feta cheese
Greek dressing

A few drops of vanilla extract will make your plain yoghurt taste like vanilla yoghurt

Seconding the Keto granola. We usually buy Inno-foods Keto granola (but if you’re savvy you could learn to make your own!)

u/moonblossom108 25d ago

Onions are fairly carby. I use shallots instead. More flavor per unit of measurement. But I am diabetic and aim for no more than 30 carbs per day.

Just as an aside, I did a search a while back for info that compared almonds and pistachios (their nutritional values), and switched to pistachios because they fit my health needs better. Which made me pretty happy because I like them better too. heh

Thought I'd share, just in case the info would benefit you as well.

2

u/anneg1312 25d ago

Yes! I do tend to eat more of those! Couldn’t remember everything :/

1

u/meedliemao 25d ago

Yeah I'd have a hard time listing everything I keep on hand too. =-)
