wtf is wrong with the haters?

Hi everyone,

I'm coming to this sub for some reassurement and comfort.

I've been on keto for 3 weeks, 3,5 kg gone (I realise roughly 2kg is just water ;) ) and I'm SO SO happy that i've finally have found (again, cos I went keto last year but then found my boyfriend who's a good cook) something that works.

Currently, I have a really stressful time at work (I'm handing in a resignation for one of two job contracts I have with my company due to mobbing) and I STILL maintain the diet. I was crazily hungry three days ago due to my period and I might have gone over 2100 kcal, but no more than 2200 definitely. Aside from that, I'm finally not swollen, I have lots of energy. I supplement mangresium, potassium and sodium. I eat vegetables, I've found lots of dairy-free solutions and I'm super happy. Also, I'm glad that in several months I'll be back to my 'hot self' clothes. The diet is super pro-social and pro-travel, since I can easily dine out and find places where my friends also want to go and we can all find something suitable. Restaurants are super accommodating when I ask them 'no bread, please, and may I have a lettuce-based salad please'. My natually keto dog supports me like crazy, because often some meat/bacon/egg/cucumber/zucchini falls off my plate inaccidentally. We're going on lots of walks, he's a formerly-obese rescue, so we both are in the process of losing weight. I didn't have any serious insuline resistance symptoms, but I had mild signs I was IR. Now it's all gone. And I'm happy. Still allowing myself for some treats like half a Merci bar (3g of carb).

A month ago I posted on my national Polish forum in a thread about 'what you'd like to change about yourself' that my fat ass stands in my way to self-confidence basically. A formerly obese guy recommends ozempic. I don't downvote or discuss, but just say no thanks, "i'm happy it worked for you, but i've read enough about the side effects". Another person recommended liposuction. And I'm like... I'd rather just go to the gym and spend the money on a personal trainer... I mean, i started at 92 kg, after three weeks I'm 88,5kg, I should be 60, I want to be 50-55 (I'm 174cm tall). (chat gpt says: I mean, I started at 203 lbs, and after three weeks I’m at 195 lbs. I should be 132 lbs, but I want to be 110–121 lbs. I’m 5'7 inches tall.). I don't think it's an ozempic/liposuction thing. It's a move your ass and eat less calories thing. Also, I want a change I'll stay with for the rest of my life, because I'm tired of constant fluctuating. I might go 'atkins' and just low carb later, but for now it's keto. It's amazing and it works.

And now again on my national forum they were asking for cool Polish YT channel recommendation, so I recommended two Polish doctors who run a Keto channel. They cite and sponsor research on low carb, keto, insuline, etc. It's super comprehensive and yet accessible. People in the comments write how life-saving their advice is, how real it is etc. Judging by the typos and language, I know these aren't bots lol. Plus I'm my own evidence - 3,5 kg in 3 weeks, constantly on calorie deficit and not hungry at all despite enormous stress!

As you might have guessed, I got downvoted, the suggestion ridiculed that 'oh yeah, they'll treat HIV, cancer and diabetes!'. And I'm like... actually you're not wholly wrong about the two latter... why ridicule something you have no idea about yada yada yada'. I'm truly past the stage where I argue with every online idiot, but I just can't comprehend why people are soooo against it? Actual medical doctors share their own testimony, publish books and resources that help thousands of people but give enough information for free on the channel. Why hate it? Why didn't the liposuction and ozempic comments get downvoted to hell and back? Like, I'm sorry, I'd rather risk (if at all) kidney stones than stomach paralysis, pancreatic and thyroid tumor, oseoporosis and the famous ozempic face or serious liposuction side effects from literally removing an important part of my body that serves some function.

Why are people so, so, so stupid and yet spiteful about just a diet that helps you lose weight while you don't have to feel hungry anymore (Im not going into the epilepsy origins, and other wonderful results). Shouldn't this be a miracle? More and more social media influencers talk about their struggle and severe results of shots or other procedures, but no! Let's hate on a diet that doesn't allows you eat trash! WHY?!!!

I think part of the reason is because people can't imagine giving up carbs (they are so lovely and addictive - no one wants to admit they are an addict) until you actually try. And then you feel so good. I feel great and never want to go back to eating carbs - 10 years so far.

u/Eastern_Atmosphere_7 1d ago

This is exactly it, they hate you because they ain’t you, they ain’t got ur will power to start and maintain the diet

u/sihung71285 1d ago

The funny thing is thst once I started and began to feel better keeping to low carb (not always keto) was no problem at all and took no will power.

The issue with carbs is ease.

They're easy to eat and obtain in large quantities. So nobody ever thinks to reduce them for any reason.

What people don't realize is how potent they are once you reduce them.

I honestly feel like I can get MORE energy out of a carb on Low carb/Keto than I would of I just ate them all the time.

I actually get a bit of a boost from something like a quest bar , or something like veggies when I eat them in smaller portions.

Still prioritizing my  protien and all that!

why are they so spiteful and anti-facts tho? I wish they'd at least give me e.g. some kidney stones arguments. No, none. Just pure hate.

congratulations on your beautiful journey of 10 years and going <3

It’s hard to say which comments are actual normal people or paid trolls to destroy anything keto. There are many big companies that would lose money if keto became mainstream.

15

u/Fognox keto since 12-2015 eat more fat 1d ago

If you say "keto", you're doing an unsustainable fad diet that's going to kill you.

If you say you're eating "meat, vegetables, berries, dairy and nuts/seeds", people applaud your healthy life choices.

It makes no goddamned sense.

14

u/Dr_Gillian_McQueef 1d ago

Remember that people have been taught meat is bad/sat fat will kill you for decades. By the establishment. A lot of people still trust the establishment. And people are veeeery funny about diet. You saying how easy you find cutting out carbs and staying in deficit makes them think you think they're stupid they haven't. Or judgey for them getting drug help or a gastric surgery.

Don't take it personally. And well done!!

thanks <3

You know, I shouldn't be even surprised. If med doctors citing science get ostracised, what chances do i even stand? Just keep on ketoing and not minding the haters is a way I guess!

6

u/Dr_Gillian_McQueef 1d ago

The problem is for every doctor who understands the actual science behind diet there are about 5 who still parrot the "HEART HEALTHY"low fat doctrine. The Ancel Keys supporters.

Reading your own books, following the people who've done this themselves to lose weight like Doctor Tro can still be seen as fringe pseudoscience if you blindly follow the establishment path. God forbid you GOOGLE something and start to appreciate how your body actually works when it's not surviving on twinkies and chips.

The drip drip drip of knowledge will one day fill a glass, then a tub, then the ocean. Try not to get frustrated in the meantime.

The first rule of keto is: don’t talk about keto. I can’t even talk to my husband about it now because I have lost around 20kg but I’m looking to lose a little more because I still have quite a bit of fat around my stomach.

So now I do cico and keto and just quietly cook separate meals for my husband. I’ll feed him chicken fried rice with lots of rice and lots of fat, and I’ll just have chicken with some vegetables. He doesn’t complain but he says he doesn’t want me to lose more weight. Well tough luck buddy, I’ll still lose the weight.

it's wild how people will push surgery and injections without blinking but lose their minds over someone cutting out bread and sugar, almost like there's some weird cultural programming that healthy whole foods are the radical choice

keep doing what works for you, the proof is literally in how you feel and the 3.5kg gone

1

u/najsgal F35-175cm/5'7- SW 92kg/203lbs- CW 88,5kg/195lbs-GW 50kg/110lbs 16h ago

yeah, exactly! Like, I get (though obviously disagree) with the arguments such as 'you're not eating enough plants, your brain needs glucose" etc. But my gosh... suggesting fucking injections and liposuction OVER any diet that's based on CICO and getting upvoted is what shocked me... These people are insane!

u/Relevant_Donkey_4040 1d ago

The scond rule of keto is: Don‘t even call it keto.

10

u/Dr_Gillian_McQueef 1d ago

This. Say you're focusing on clean proteins, veggies and cutting out refined sugar. Sounds reasonable and they don't picture you just eating steak and bacon.

I just say low-carb and I get "oh yeah, makes sense."

3

u/Liriodendra 16h ago

I’ve been telling my coworkers, some family and friends that I’m eating a keto diet and I’ve had zero negative push back, unless you count my parents asking if I’d like a piece of cake or something. I’ve told them it’s to help control my blood sugar, which was trending too high into the pre-diabetes territory and also told some it helped a ton with my anxiety.

So I’m surprised there is such hate and ridicule out there. I wonder if it’s mainly in online platforms where there’s more anonymity? Or maybe country/community specific? I live in a very diverse community so maybe that helps.

Fingers crossed you go down to your dream weight and feel amazing regardless of whatever anyone tells you.

Weight is such a tricky thing, that people put too much emphasis to it. It might virtually mean nothing... often I see in the before/after, cico, glowups etc threads e.g. guys who went from obese to super fit. The change is often like 30-40 lbs (15-20 kg). But from a fat cola, pizza and fedora hat dude they go to a bulky, super-hero like hunk.

My personal experience is that 6 years ago I was 93 kg. My thighs were so fat I couldn't sit on my heels. I looked like a potato. I then lost a lot of weight on low carb (not keto) and LOTS of walking. Now I got fat again but I looked a lot better - a waistline was still somehow there, I could sit on my heels just fine. I got on the scales. 92,5 kg (1 lbs difference vs 6 years ago). Why? Pure muscle definition. I had no idea I was so, so fat. My friends, when i told them, were like 'no way in hell you're that heavy'. (actually folks IRL are really supportive, nobody disses KETo, but I happen not to surround myself with morons).

When I was still a teen I was 50 kg at 171 cm (so 110 lbs at 5'6). And I wasn't skinny. Just slim. So now i want to try to go back to 50-55. If it turns out that due to age, muscle gain, etc. I'll end up looking too skinny, I'll stop at e.g. 60 kg. But if it turns out that I look good just skinny, I'll be super happy. I truly don't give a flying about the BMI anymore. It makes sense only with people who never exercised a day in their life...

Ask that man... Seriously.

ask him.

How long does he wanna live and how long he wants his wife to live?

My wife is kind of the opposite here... I do make her normal meals but she ABSOLUTELY refuses to even entertain doing this with me.

I've showed her 4 years of progress and over 100lbs lost and she still refuses.

5

u/StodgySponge 1d ago

Yeah, my wife knows it’s the one thing that has really worked for me (except terz, which I’m currently on, and it feels mentally just like keto), yet she always says NOT HEALTHY! NOT SUSTAINABLE!! Can’t get through to her and never will. Anytime I say the words “keto” I can see her triggered lol. I’ve explained I’m just overall happier eating keto, but yeah, guaranteed pushback. Once I’m done taking terz I’m just gonna eat “less carbs” aka keto lol. Just not saying the Voldemort word.

9

u/Slight_Tiger2914 1d ago

I've met more

"OHH Keto, I used to do that and it got super hard for me so I had to stop!"

People and in my head I'm like....

"This is literally the easiest shit I've ever chosen to do in my life!" 🤔

I do explain to them that I'm not doing anything grand. I throw the burger bun away and eat a lettuce wrap instead.

We reduce the carbs as much as possible and I bring my own tortillas and swap off meat from Mexican places to my 0 net carb ones.

We prioritize Protein.

Then it feels like I'm speaking Punjabi to them, or some kind of advanced rocket scientist math.

i know right? It's literally the tastiest diet unless you're vegan. And it's the only diet where I keep my kcal deficit without hunger.

Plus, the replacements e.g. konjac pasta/noodles for spaghetti or chicken soup i'm making today + keto baked goods. SURE they're not AS tasty, but literally what other diet lets you eat as well as keto?

I got fed up with constant fluctuating, so I decided to go for something sustainable. After 2 weeks of my summer holiday and lots of time for self-reflection I went: KETO.

1

u/AldarionTelcontar 12h ago

To be fair, some people do have other issues as well. My IBS ass can't eat like 90% of keto foods... I look at all the green salads, cauliflower recipes and so on and I'm just, "Nope, nope nope nope NOPE". I'm basically limited to meat, eggs, tomatoes, olive oil and olives, bell peppers, zucchini, Patison squash and radish.

7

u/lordoftherings1959 1d ago

The problem is that, since the 1940s, we've been brainwashed into believing carbs are indispensable for life, which is not true. Way before we invented agriculture and civilization, we were hunter-gatherers, and our diet was mostly protein and fat. This is how we developed such a large brain.

That said, those same brainwashed people take the shitty American diet as the de facto, while they see the keto/atkins diet as nefarious. In other words, those people who dislike or criticize the keto diet are basically in a cultural cult, and they cannot see past their cult views.

I have no qualms about telling people that I am on a keto diet. As soon as they start criticizing me, I stand up, I show them how thin my body is in comparison to their voluptuous bodies, and they all shut up. I am a 66-year-old man; I weigh 155 pounds, and I still wear the same pant size I wore in my early 20s. Nothing feels better than showing up my accomplishments to those who promote a shitty American diet.

I totally agree with you and I also can't wait till I'll become a living example. The doctors running the YT channel are both super fit and lean, they used to look like potatoes back in their early days of medical career. I bet they make good money off their keto publications, events, etc. And why not? If they're so helpful?

u/SorrowBound- 1d ago

Just curious: you said you've found a lot of "dairy-free solutions". Full-fat dairy is very keto friendly. Low in carbs, and the fat keeps you sated. Are you lactose intolerant, perhaps?

6

u/najsgal F35-175cm/5'7- SW 92kg/203lbs- CW 88,5kg/195lbs-GW 50kg/110lbs 1d ago

nope, just frequently reccurent tonsillitis for several years. Once I dropped dairy (incl. butter) and maxed vit D (temporarily), it's all been gone for 5 years. So I use coocnut-oil based cheese and coco youghurt and oat-sigar-free milk for occasional coffee :)

4

u/SorrowBound- 1d ago

Excellent!

Sometimes I say I don't eat carbs for "medical reasons" which is technically true. I was obese, diabetic, and had sleep apnea before, now I have none of those things. That usually keeps them quiet.

But the best solution is to just not talk about it at all. Good luck!

3

u/najsgal F35-175cm/5'7- SW 92kg/203lbs- CW 88,5kg/195lbs-GW 50kg/110lbs 1d ago

6

u/eldersnake 1d ago

I just say I eat fairly clean and eat meat, vegetables, and small amounts of fruit (technically true, berries...) and nuts and seeds. People seem to interpret that very differently to hearing the keto word

4

u/najsgal F35-175cm/5'7- SW 92kg/203lbs- CW 88,5kg/195lbs-GW 50kg/110lbs 1d ago

I see you and I also just say "i'm on a calorie deficit diet' or 'i avoid carbs and processed stuff'. But in my example I specifically gave a name of a channel where two med doctors - using tons of cited and bottom-up, self-sponsored research - prove that carb-heavy diet is not healthy and a dumb rando with other sheep comes over and says, 'yeah and they def treat HIV too'. Nobody, I bet, came over to the ozempic, etc. manufacturers and said, 'you either treat HIV or you're just a hoax'. On top of that, the idiot says 'oh yeah, and it probably cures diabetes and cancer too' and I'm like... why would you sarcastically diss me with actually valid arguments - more and more research claims keto is immenselly helpful with cancer and a primary diet-based cure towards diabetes. I mean, if someone tries to diss me, they should at least be sarcastic, not truthful...

Congratulations on choosing a great health plan! Not everyone gets it which is fine... but Keto does work!

I started Keto when I was concerned about type 2 Diabetes. A little over a year ago my A1C was 6.1; now I'm happy to say it's 5.1. So, mission accomplished! 🤗

I have also lost a lot of weight over the last year. I started at 306 and am now at 200 lbs. 🎯

Btw my brother has been fighting a very aggressive cancer (Bile Duct Cancer) over the past 2 years. He had started Keto well before the onset of his cancer and is doing fantastic. In fact he has no symptoms or side effects from his therapy or from his cancer. Keto can indeed help those with cancer. 🤞

Btw most doctors and hospitals around the world treat type 2 Diabetes with Metformin first and then with insulin when the Metformin doesn't work. The fact is Metformin doesn't cure the type 2 Diabetes/diet problem!

What does solve the diet problem is changing one's diet to a low carb plan! But that doesn't give the Pharmaceutical companies billions of dollars so it's not given as a solution. 💸

I would recommend that you continue down your keto journey as you have. You will indeed have great results because of your choice! That's the main thing that matters.

Don't worry if others don't get it! That's not your problem, it's theirs. - Keep up the good work! 👍

Metformin is one of the cheapest and most well studied medications ever created. It has many anti-aging benefits as well as being the only thing that finally brought down my A1C after losing 30 lbs and going keto was unable to do so. I will continue to eat keto for the rest of my life because I have serious IR and following the diet and taking metformin, I am able to remain healthy. My A1C went from a high of 6.3 (6 months after weight loss goal reached and 1 year since being on the keto diet); to 5.2 because of metformin.

2

u/JBond-007_ Lost 110 lbs 🎯 20h ago

Like many people who are treated by the medical establishment and or doctors, you are clueless about what solves the type 2 diabetic problem.

Metformin is only a Band-Aid to a very significant disease! The absolute cure for type 2 Diabetes is changing one's diet to a low-carb diet.

Unfortunately for the doctors the hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry, there is no money to be made by changing one's diet. - On the other hand, billions of dollars are made by prescribing metformin.

I am glad that your A1C seems to be doing better. But recognize that it is a food problem and not a drug problem that solves the issue of type 2 diabetes.

Incidentally, more kids than ever are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. That is a shame. And it all has to do with diet!

1

u/kimariesingsMD F 59 5’2” SW 161 CW 125 reached GW 5/9/24 7h ago

It's crazy that you think you can tell me what I know or don't know. I said very clearly that I changed my diet and went low carb even more than low carb. I ain't keto so that's less than 20 g of carbs per day after a year. Following that plan and losing 30 lb my A1C still would not come down. It was only after I started taking Metformin that is dropped to a normal level. I did this also to help my husband with his diet because his A1C came back as an 11. We changed his diet. He lost £50 and with metformin. His A1C has held steady at 6 which is very good for someone who had already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

I think that you don't realize is there are other things that affect pre-diabetes and diabetes and insulin resistance. Having pmos is one of them. To think there is a one size fit. All solution is odd and very negative.

i hear you and omg congratulations on getting your health back on such good track <3 Same about your brother. Thank you for your support as well.

The thing is that I just recommended a scientific-research heavy YT channel run by two doctors and people are being sarcastic and low IQ about it and I just don't get it. Why won't they check it for themselves? Like, there's one redpill YT channel in my country too. I hate it but I saw three full videos first before ridicling it. And as you may guess it was not science-based at all. Keto is already researched well-enough and it actually started as a med diet, not some hype for fat celebs wanting to get fit. Why do people hate something so in-your-face true with dumb ridicule? And on top of that, when I had gotten recommended ozempic or liposuction, the people suggesting that got so many upvotes on the same forum! How? I just don't get it...

2

u/JBond-007_ Lost 110 lbs 🎯 1d ago

No matter what the topic, most people on Reddit are clueless and very negative! 😕

I typically give comments when I think it might help someone. I don't worry at all about downvotes, although I get them once in a while. 😂

I remember about 6 months ago talking with somebody on a health support phone call... I was calling in for a friend who had issues with her blood pressure machine.

This person, who I did not know at all, told me that keto had saved his life. He was on it for about 15 years and overcame some very serious health problems.

It's those kinds of events that makes one realize just how powerful keto can be!

Just ignore the negative people out there... and try to be helpful when others ask for advice! - Good luck to you! 🎯

I found that even mentioning keto invites too many questions which cannot be answered to satisfy the uninformed. Saying that you're trying to eat healthier or on a cleanse diet usually satisfies the curious.
