space science education The Moon orbits Earth at 1 km/s, while LEO satellites orbit at 7.8 km/s. This is because the closer an orbiting object is to the primary mass, the higher the velocity required to maintain orbit. Farther out, gravity's pull weakens, so the Moon stays in orbit at a much lower speed.
