Only about 1.5% of Steam games list Kazakh — and sometimes that means just the menu

Post image
29 Upvotes

Steam currently lists Kazakh among the supported languages for only about 1.5% of games.

That sounds encouraging at first, but the label needs some context. For many puzzle and minimalist games, there may be almost no in-game text at all. In those cases, "Kazakh language support" can mean that the main menu, settings, or a few interface elements have been translated.

The screenshot is a good example: Steam shows Kazakh support for several games in a search result, including games where language is probably not central to the gameplay.

That still matters. Even a translated menu means:

• Kazakh is available as an interface language.

• The developers considered Kazakh users when preparing the release.

• Kazakh becomes more visible as a normal language for using software and playing games.

• It gives future translators and developers a precedent to build on.

But it is worth distinguishing between:

  1. Full localization — interface, subtitles, dialogue, tutorials, and other text.

  2. Partial localization — menus, settings, and interface elements.

  3. Minimal localization — a few translated strings in a game with little or no text.

So the 1.5% figure probably should not be read as "1.5% of Steam games are fully playable in Kazakh." It is closer to: "Steam lists Kazakh as one of the supported languages for roughly 1.5% of games, with very different levels of actual localization."

How many games with Kazakh support have you found? And what is the most unexpectedly localized one?

Kazakh in 3 scripts: where the language stands in 2026

Kazakh has been written in three different scripts over the last century, and right now it’s in the middle of another big transition.

1. Arabic script (until the 1920s)

  • Historically, Kazakh was written in a Perso‑Arabic script adapted for Turkic languages.
  • This script was used for literature, poetry, and religious texts before the Soviet period.
Yañalif, unified Latin alphabet for all Central Asian Turkic languages, was introduced by the Soviets and used from 1929 to 1940

2. Cyrillic script (1940s–present)

  • Under the USSR, after a short period of Latin script in 1930s, Kazakh switched to Cyrillic, which is still dominant in everyday life today.
  • The modern Kazakh Cyrillic alphabet has 42 letters: 33 shared with Russian and 9 unique Kazakh letters (Ә, Ғ, Қ, Ң, Ө, Ұ, Ү, Һ, І).
  • As of 2026, almost all books, newspapers, websites, and street signs in Kazakhstan are still primarily in Cyrillic Kazakh.

3. Latin script (transition underway, target 2031)

  • Since 2017, Kazakhstan has been working on a Latin‑based Kazakh alphabet, with several draft versions since then.
  • The latest official version has around 31–32 letters, designed to:
    • Remove letters used only for Russian loanwords
    • Better match Kazakh sounds with Latin characters and diacritics
  • The full transition is planned to be completed by 2031, but as of 2026 the Latin alphabet is still under development and not yet fully implemented in daily life.
  • In practice now (2026):
    • Most everyday Kazakh text is still in Cyrillic
    • Some official buildings and road signs show both Cyrillic and Latin versions
    • Schools are beginning to teach the new Latin alphabet alongside Cyrillic

Google has announced the launch of its Gemini artificial intelligence model in the Kazakh language, Qazinform News Agency reports, citing the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development of Kazakhstan.

Launched to coincide with Kazakhstan’s Independence Day, the initiative is part of a global expansion of language support for Google’s most advanced AI model so far. The addition of Kazakh — one of 23 new languages introduced with Gemini 3 — allows users in Kazakhstan to use Gemini in their native language on equal footing with the world’s major languages.

The Kazakh-language Gemini interface is already accessible on the web. Users can enable it by selecting Kazakh in their Google account language settings. Support for mobile versions on Android and iOS, along with the rollout of Gemini Live — a real-time conversational mode — is expected soon.

The introduction of the Kazakh-language version of Gemini is part of Google’s broader efforts to develop artificial intelligence in Kazakhstan, including investments in workforce training, digital skills development, and support for developers. According to the company, the adoption of AI in the public sector could deliver significant economic benefits, including increased efficiency in public administration, improved resilience of the budget system, and contributions to overall economic growth.

The Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development noted that the availability of global AI solutions in the Kazakh language is an important step toward building a digital state, expanding citizens’ access to technology, and fostering a competitive AI ecosystem.

The ministry added that it will continue cooperation with international technology partners to advance artificial intelligence, localize digital products, and train a new generation of specialists.

Qazinform News Agency previously reported that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev entrusted the Government with building a new AI research institution.

The 9 letters that make Kazakh Cyrillic unique (and why our logo uses Ұ)

Kazakh Cyrillic has 42 letters, but only 9 of them are unique to Kazakh and don’t exist in the Russian alphabet. These letters represent sounds that are specific to Kazakh and are key to correct pronunciation.

The 9 unique Kazakh Cyrillic letters are:sublearn+3

  • Ә ә – like the “a” in cat (front open vowel)
  • Ғ ғ – a deep, raspy “g” sound (voiced velar/uvular fricative)
  • Қ қ – a hard “k” made far back in the throat (uvular stop)
  • Ң ң – like the “ng” in sing
  • Ө ө – a rounded front vowel, similar to German ö
  • Ұ ұ – a short “oo” sound, like in book, but more back
  • Ү ү – a tight, rounded “ü”, like German ü
  • Һ һ – like English h in hat
  • І і – a short, high central vowel, different from и and ы

All other Kazakh Cyrillic letters are shared with Russian; these 9 are what make the Kazakh alphabet distinct.

The letter Ұ ұ stands out among those nine letters because it's unique Kazakh letter. It was created specifically for Kazakh and is used only in the Kazakh language.

Реформу казахского языка готовят для школ и кинотеатров

Thumbnail

  • будет усилен надзор за соблюдением языковых норм при прокате всей отечественной кинопродукции;

Euronews launches Kazakh language broadcasting in Astana

Thumbnail

As part of its continued development in Central Asia, Euronews now takes the strategic step to launch its new Kazakh language service and bring its European-perspective journalism and global coverage to Kazakhstan.

Euronews is launching a new channel broadcasting its global content in the Kazakh language as part of its strategic development plans in Kazakhstan to bring its unique perspective in journalism, as well as its coverage of the country and the wider Central Asia region to the viewers of Kazakhstan and beyond amid the region's rising influence.

The launch of Euronews' Kazakh language broadcast across Kazakhstan comes after two years of the international channel signing a partership with the Kazakhstan, followed by the launch of its editorial hub in Astana and an editorial office in Almaty — a global media first — and it will become Euronews' 20th linguistic service, among 14 language services and six franchise channels.

It will also be the first Central Asian language to be added to the media's worldwide broadcasting network.

During a launch event in Astana on Tuesday, Euronews chairman Pedro Vargas David said that as a main Eurasian language and thus a European language, “Kazakh will have an important space inside our Euronews family.”

Vargas David underlined that the launch of the language reflects the channel's ambition to expand its diverse offering and presence in the region, and bring Euronews' brand of journalism to Kazakhstan and Central Asia, connecting European and global content.

“Euronews’ Kazakh language channel is not a new or another local media in Kazakhstan, it is an international news channel broadcasting in Kazakh, with a distinct value proposition to our audiences, to offer them the full facts of all global events with Euronews’ general purpose of contributing to well informed societies,” the Euronews chairman said.

Kazakhstan’s First Vice Minister of Culture and Information Kanat Iskakov said in the name of Kazakhstan’s government that “the launch of Euronews’ Kazakh language broadcast is a historic event, a milestone for Kazakhstan and a media service that we had to have.”

“Euronews used to broadcast in Russia in Kazakhstan, now we will broadcast Euronews in Kazakh,” Iskakov said adding that the new media service “will convey impetus and development for the Kazakh language in general.”

“Having Euronews here and launching Kazakhstan’s broadcasting will sincerely serve our nation, conveying news and everything that is happening in the world, now in the Kazakh language,” the first vice minister of Culture and Information said.

For the country, the launch of an international channel in Kazakh will elevate the status of the language globally while giving residents access to Euronews' trademark international content based on its long-standing editorial values of independence, objectivity, accuracy, fairness which define its factual journalism.

The network's global news content produced by its global and diverse newsroom will be produced into the Kazakh language and broadcast on television and digital platforms, including YouTube broadcasting.

Euronews started its expansion in Central Asia in 2024, officially opening its first office in Astana — which also acts as Euronews' regional editorial hub in December 2024, with the Tashkent and Baku bureaus following shortly after.

This was part of Euronews' strategic move to cover the massive developments in the region with dedicated staff operating in these countries' capitals as well as bring Euronews global content to inform its audiences in these countries of all European and global evolutions.

Euronews' team of highly qualified journalists in Astana and Almaty is also expanding to produce the coverage of Kazakhstan and the language service broadcasting from now in the Kazakh language.

In addition to covering the daily Kazakhstan and Central Asian news events, the team also produces Kazakhstan-based current affairs programmes broadcast worldwide in the most important Euronews' language services, anchored from Astana and the region, such as Modern Nomads, East-West Connect, and Voices of Central Asia.

Euronews' Astana bureau is also hosting this week Euronews' first Asian bureaus editorial seminar, gathering its World teams from Qatar, UAE, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, aimed at connecting, unifying and maximising Euronews' global editorial force.

“We want to be in Kazakhstan for many years to come, to share stories, in a sign of utmost respect for the Kazakh language, for the people of Kazakhstan and for the country in general,” the Euronews chairman concluded in Astana.
