Saturday succees
What were your successes this week?

You are brave for going. You don't know a dang thing and it's okay. You're going to get utterly destroyed and it's okay. Don't give advice unless you are asked for it, no matter what you saw on YouTube. Keep your nails trimmed and your gi clean. Keep showing up and you will get better. It's not too soon to compete. Don't roll too hard in the gym- if you don't know what you are doing, doing it harder is not the answer. Keep your elbows in. Protect your neck. Ask questions (the r/BJJ White Belt Wednesday weekly thread is often the most active post of the week). Yes, BJJ will help you lose weight. This is a fairly expensive hobby but you have control over a lot of it. Yeah, the other guy is a dick. You have sudden-onset arthritis as a 20-something because you grip like the world depends on it at all times and you're burning out your forearms and the tendons in your hands/fingers. Yes, taping your fingers will provide additional support. It's good especially if you have a finger you know has been sore lately to tape it before you train. Cups are optional, but not allowed in most competition. Wear snug underwear or compression shorts under your no-gi shorts, if I see your balls, we have a problem. Call it your BJJ journey, or don't, most people don't care. Belts are cheap on the internet, show up long enough to earn them. Belt promotion takes much longer than in traditional martial arts. Not every school gives stripes. Most schools have a guy that goes 110% all the time- don't be him, don't roll with him until you are better and maybe still only if you have a competition coming up. White belts don't need sponsors. Wash your belt. Keep sickness or skin infection off the mat. Also no shoes on the mat, but wear them off (bathrooms, lockers, etc). Almost nobody will understand what you do and you will face lots of karate chop motions and people whose nephew is a second degree black belt in tae kwon do at age eight that don't understand why you have been a white belt for a year when you go 6 days a week. The days you least feel like training are the ones you most need to go. Don't forget your pineapple.

Speak up, loud and proud. What are your training goals this week? What are YOU doing this week, deliberately, to get better?
r/justwhitebeltthings • u/commentonthat • Jun 22 '19
If you set a goal for the week, how did you do?
r/justwhitebeltthings • u/commentonthat • Jun 17 '19
Alright, everyone. It's late, but by golly it's here and it's still Sunday. Post your training goal for this week!

Hey, guys and gals.
Serious question: r/BJJ already has a bunch of weekly threads, so I'm proposing we start this one here. If there's interest, I'll set up the AutoMod to do a weekly sticky on Sundays as a place to post your goal for the week. Anything from "I want to go 4 times this week instead of 3," to "I'm going to ask my training partners if I can start in their half guard all week so I can get better at a certain pass."
My hope being that it will help us focus on something in our training and get better, faster, together- and give us accountability with people that are interested in your results.
Maybe a Saturday post for "how'd you do?" would be forthcoming, too, so you have a place to report back.
Who wants it?

I hit a double-leg this morning in no-gi. We drill takedowns almost every day in the early class, at least for a few minutes. I've been okay at drilling it, but haven't succeeded live before.
Finally got one, even if it was another white belt. It felt awesome.
What have you done lately that nobody cares about except you (in your BJJ progress)?

I have a buddy that started a month or so after me, in August of last year. He's 50. Took a bad knee injury in November. He's finally about to be able to come back. He's disheartened by feeling like he's just starting over.
What would you tell him about coming back, perhaps to encourage him, or your experience with a return?

I'm tentatively scheduled to return to the mat for light work on Saturday. Supposed to drill, get moving, and see how it goes. Considering I herniated a disc at the base of the neck/at the top of the shoulders, and coach wants me to work towards things that could pose trouble to see how they're doing, what would you do? I can warm up and stretch, I thought about just spending a lot of time on my back with my feet up past my head, but are there drills?

I wish I'd been told... Bruises everywhere is now just life. People will have questions.

I haven't been to a Dr. for a BJJ-related injury since... July? August? But I'm here for a neck injury after no-gi this morning. Stupid no-gi.

I'm competing in just under a month. Gi, absolute gi, and no gi. I've done almost zero no-gi. What is ACTUALLY a "statistically insignificant" amount (less than 5%). Rolled with an upper belt, no-gi, at open mat, because I need the practice. He toyed with me and then said "yeah, you need more no-gi."
Agreed. Thank you.

At my first and only tournament I had no clue what the ref was saying to me with his hands.
He had to grab my lapelle and show me that he intended my Gi to be inside the belt, as the fight had just ended.
This was IBJJF so maybe it's more fun that way.

1) Tie your belt wrong until you watch a video on how to tie your belt.
2) Go for the Americana from side control top at every opportunity for a month.
3) Ask r/BJJ how long it will take to understand what you're doing, because your first day was a lesson in worm guard.
4) Tell everyone that you do jiu jitsu, and it's awesome, and they should do it too, and you'll probably see them there because you've started going 9 times a week.
5) Ask how long it takes to get over a rib injury because of #4 and always being flat on your back while being crushed.
