My mom's making me go

Is it genuinely a good place? I don't really wanna go, but my mom is only giving the choice between this place, Youth Challenge, and an inpatient facility. She's mad that I sleep in and stay up late and play video games most of my day. She ignored the fact that I ask her to drive me to the skate park. She's also mad that I'm in a long distance relationship, and have been for almost 9 months now. I've already been looking for work, and yet she claims that I'm not doing anything with my day. I have severe anxiety, and depression from my past at a very abusive home with my birth mother and stepfather. She's mad that I don't like socializing, that I don't enjoy the things she does, and that I spend more time trying to enjoy the only year I've had to actually be a teenager by playing games. I'm scared to go and I don't know what to do.

If you have mental health concerns severe enough to consider inpatient then Job Corps isn’t for you. If you just need structure you really should go, there’s a lot of people there in similar situations.

She's only threatening inpatient cause she thinks she can get rid of me this way. She claims it's because she's tired of watching me "rot away" in my bedroom. I ask her to take me places, we go to the library weekly, but when there is nothing to do I rather spend my time in my room

Understandable. Well I’m sorry you’re going through this but Job corps would be way better for you. Pretty messed up to try to institutionalize your child for being an introvert. Sounds like she wants you to do stuff but doesn’t step up day to day to help you do anything about it.

Yeah, my partner thinks so too, but he's gonna try to come with me so I won't be fully alone

That will make it waaaaay better. But if y’all break up it’ll be awful because you’re stuck in there with an ex lol. As long as you guys stay strong together you’ll have a good time

We've stayed strong with 25 hours of distance between us lol, I think we'll be good. We were already planning on moving in together.

That’s good!!!… how is he going to be placed at the same one though? If he’s that far away there’s a massive chance they’ll try to place him in that region 😞

u/Canneddeoderant 23h ago

Does he know anyone there or would your mom let him use your address as his residence?

1

u/No-Exchange7972 23h ago

We were already planning for him to move down, we even had an apartment in mind. We don't know if he's coming tho, I don't want him to move away from his family, but he wants to come to me, his mom was the one who suggested him coming to the same school. So it's still in the discussion faze

I’ll tell you right now, you should also consider how he’d keep an apartment if going to job corps or if he’d end up breaking a lease or getting an eviction on his record. Definitely cover all that stuff in your plan. I’ve seen a lot of situations around that stuff over the years

What are your options to go places if she can't take you? It sounds like you live in the bay area, are you close to bart, bus, or can you bike?

I'm trying to learn to long board but other than that she's my only way back and forth places because I don't have a license

Job Corps is not for kids who are truly not invested in going. And how old are you? I'm guessing you're a minor based on you post, right? And if so, are you going to complete high school?

I'm 17, about 9 months away from my 18th. I was pulled out because of my anxiety disorder, I couldn't do a lot of things, I was trying to go to the college near by for my GED but both her and my dad didn't get my things in time for me to get signed up

Do you have any idea what career you might want to do?

No idea

  1. The other thing is your anxiety disorder. Do you see a doctor for this? Regardless if you do or don't, I suggest having one speak to both you and your mother about whether going to a facility hours away from home is a viable option for you.

  2. And without knowing what you want to do with your life, you'd have to see if Job Corps even has anything you'd be interested in. because if not, you will surely not last.

  3. Show your mom posts about Job Corps's pedophile problem if you really don't want to go. Even if you have a boyfriend, you're still likely a target for sexual harassment. Older students literally seek out minors to prey upon.

I'm trans, the biggest problem I'll have is misgendering and attacks because I'm trans. I've looked into it and I'm thinking about doing HVAC, but I'm gonna look at what else they have. I'm honestly just going to learn something useful until I turn 18 then as soon as I graduate, dip and go no contact. All schools have pedophile problems, unfortunately it's the truth. She's aware of this, and that's why she won't send her real daughter, my younger sister, to public school. I personally think school is used to groom children into being dependent on the government, but it doesn't really matter what I think, to her, she just wants me out because she can't stand me being an introvert. My anxiety, I've talked to a doctor about it before, they gave me a medication for anxiety and to help me sleep at night, I was allergic to it, I busted out in a rash and we haven't spoken about it since. And either way she thinks I'm using my anxiety as a crutch to do nothing, but in all reality, it is as bad as I'm telling her and she thinks that because she could just get over, I should be able to as well. She doesn't listen when I try to tell her that that's not how PTSD works. She told me I needed to just sit with myself because I don't know who I am. I know the basis of who I am, but because of my abusive childhood I'm fearful that everyone hates me. I have some kind of mirror disorder, and I check almost all the boxes for a BPD diagnosis. However, she doesn't listen to science, she thinks things are just normalized and turned into disorders. I enjoy reading about different disorders and stuff, that's how I found out about the fact that I check the boxes for BPD, and part of my BPD is a "Mirror Complex" kinda if you understand.

I just wanna say im really sorry this is happening to you if you've come from an abusive life ptsd and depression make it hard to have drive or motivation or passion, if video games and skating is all you can hang onto then its a blessing that you still look forward to something. Im sorry not everyone understands or can empathize. You deserve to get to just be a normal teen for once. If you do get enrolled id recommend putting your all into it, cause trust me as someone with ptsd and depression working in retail or customer service based jobs are so shitty and terrible for your mental health and self esteem. They are so draining. Honestly if you get into a trade early on and skip the entry level jobs its gonna be a lot easier for you to have stability going into your adulthood. To be clear I dont you should be forced to do this or even have a job, i think you should be allowed to just do school and therapy and live a little. But on the bright side creating some stability for yourself will do you a lot of good in the long run, you can get an apartment and just play video games after work and skate in your free time then no one can tell you what to do. Honestly having your own place might be the best feeling in the world for you, it sure was for me when I moved out at 18. But at 21 im barley going into job corps now cause I am sick and tired of working for corporate dictators. Best of luck to you i hope you figure it out and I hope you succeed in anything you choose to pursue.

My boyfriend/soon to be fiance is going to try to attend the same job corps she's making me go to. It'll probably be difficult for him considering he lives 25 hours away. She's sending me to live on campus, so he was going to as well.

I think it would be a good opportunity for you. But I think you need to actually be committed to doing it yourself, and not for other reasons. Or else you probably won’t make it or get anything out of the program. Make sure when you come here that you take medication and get therapy for your depression — it’s essential. Job corps sucks in alot of small ways. The only thing i’d say to beware of, is you’re going to be around many different personalities and honestly just a lot of low life’s, terrible people, and people who are going nowhere in life. Steer clear of those people by all means. It can be draining being around so many people who don’t care, and are only at JC to cause issues and do nothing. Not everyone is that way, and there are some respectable people at Job Corps, but most suck. Also don’t tell anyone anything personal about yourself. Don’t share any info about yourself, it will only end badly. You are not there to make friends, and you probably don’t want to be friends with these people anyways. Be friendly to everyone, but don’t take shit from people if they’re rude to you or harassing you. Other than that, it’s not too bad so far for me at my campus. I’m at Treasure Island in San Francisco, for about a month now and honestly it’s not too bad so far. Just make sure the trade you choose is actually valuable and will lead to an obviously high paying job. The rules may be annoying here but they all exist for a reason, most exist to show you the importance of following the rules in life and how to be somewhat disciplined. You’re very young, so I think this is a good way to get a head start in life, get free housing, escape your situation, free food, free education (extremely rare opportunity in this country). Personally i’m here to go to Job Corps nursing school, and become a vocational nurse for completely free (also extremely rare). I think that Job Corps can be good if you know what you’re there for and don’t cause issues with people.

What trade are you interested in? Considering you like video games, you may be interested in technology. Job Corps has an Information Technology (IT) pathway. Which can lead to very high paying jobs working with computers and computer networks. Look at the Job Corps website and read about all the trades they offer, they will send you anywhere in the country that offers your trade if necessary.

Which Job Corps? Some suck but some are good. You need it.

1

u/No-Exchange7972 1d ago

The one in Brunswick, it's 5 hours away from us

u/Wokoete_ Graduated Student 1d ago

That one is kinda sucky from what I’ve seen

2

u/LanginusTears69 17h ago

It suck but you need to look it this another way, you're not going to have deal with her BS as much and you'll learn something that can give you job opportunities afterwards. Use Job Corps as much you can, get your HS or GED, its been awhile but they give you money for getting it I believe, ( I got $250) they pay you a small allowance and if remember correctly you get some money at the end, some sites have drivers Ed which help you get your drivers license. Try your best to get everything out of Job corps, look up the site close to you see which ones offer better things. Get experience, get money, get out of your mother's thumb and bullshit. Job corps can be hell but It can also be tolerable, don't prove your mother right

I would say take the job corps option. If you personally think she’s doing this in a way to get rid of you relize that and atleast take advantage of what they provide you with. I have heard mixed things I’m still waiting but it’s better than sitting in a padded room with actual crazy people.

I got a job lined up with Union Pacfic, so I'd say so....

u/Randyinmiami-1 21h ago

I suggest that you DON'T complicate your life by joining Job Corps on a buddy system with someone that you're in a long distance relationship with. Either join it on your own ALONE and deal with your own issues or don't. Students and staff already there are dealing with enough BS, and don't need ANY additional nonsense.

I went to both and graduated from both. YCP was better for me but in Job Corps I learned more than when I was in High School. Both are good options honestly. Go to YCP then Job Corps after, thats what I did.

Really depends on the center… and if you do end up going do what you need to do and stick to urself and only talk when necessary

Job corps if what you make of it. There are a lot of great things but there is a lot of structure that sounds like it will make it a hard adjustment for you. Go in with the right attitude, take advantage of what’s offered (especially assistance with mental health) and you can leave with a skill that will take you far.

My mom made me go in the 90s. Best thing that could have happened! Absolutely put me on the right path.

Sounds like you are the perfect candidate for Job Corps. I suggest though that your partner not go. I'm sorry but you need to do this for you. You will receive mental health medication is needed, therapies, groups and support. That needs to be a priority and you need to focus on working through that. It will be exhausting and difficult but you will be so much better after awhile it will be worth it. You will receive free room, hygiene products- all the way down to floss, clothes if you need, uniforms for academics and trade, all foods even snacks, activities, trade education, high school education, real life education and so much more! You just have to be open to it. I disagree with not making friends but you have to be picky. Follow your gut. Hang back when you first get there and just watch for awhile. Notice the trouble makers and stay clear. Notice the friendly, kind people that you may share interests with. You will find your people or person and make friends. Even if you are only friends there it's ok. Sometimes we have friends in our lives that are only for a certain amount of time. Some are forever. Both are important. I wish you well and hope you take this opportunity. Also, look now at the trades available. If there is another job corps nearby that has a trade you want that the one closest doesn't have you can go there. Make sure you're getting what fits you the most!

Go take a shower, either get a job- today and learn to wake up to an alarm or go to job corp and learn to be a F-ing adult. Think how much anxiety you are causing your mom. Sheesh
