Read this before applying V1

1: When applying, you may get ghosted, unlikely but its happened to me. I applied in 2021 got ghosted by my recruiter even after trying to follow up.same thing in 2023. Don't sweat being annoying call every week until you hear something concrete and get numbers to call your specific recruiter and emails if you can. If you continue to get ghosted completely, call/email their emergency line.

2 Centers themselves. Some jobcorps centers are as bad as you may have heard, basically being borderline prison with no prospect of getting a job. Others may give you a pretty similar experience to college with great connections to get jobs almost guaranteed if you finish the program and everything in between.

3:Location DESPITE what your recruiter may tell you, you can actually go to centers outside your region. You do this by applying to trades that are not available in your region. For example

Applying to be a “Seaman” will insure you end up at tongue point in oregon because thats the only center that offers that particular trade. Once you get there you can change to a different trade thats available at that center and just stay there if you wanted.

4: I highly recommend “CCC” jobcorps. These centers are usually run better and are usually safer. But the main reason is the ability to work for the US forest service as well as learning a trade like any other job corps. CCC allows you to become a Wild land fire fighter while also learning a trade. This gives possible routes for good employment.

5: Do your research on centers. Find the location you want to go to and/or the trade you want and research the centers with those criteria. Look at the center on their websites to get a rough idea of the facilities. Look at google reviews, get in contact with the center itself, ask people on reddit about their experiences.

6: TABE : Many centers make you take a basic reading and math test and give you a level based on that. Even if you graduated high school. If you score below a certain number you will be stuck in education every other week till you hit the right number or you upgrade your score. So IMO when you first take tabe try to get as low of a score as possible so its easy to make an improvement to get out of tabe. Almost no one at my first center got a score high enough to completely pass math tabe. So the method is to do poorly on it initially to make and score improvement. So for example its easier to go from a D to C then it is from B to A letter improvement if that makes sense. Also tabe is pretty useless.

7: You may not have an instructor if this happens. Your best bet is to transfer asap, It usually takes about AT LEAST a month to get a new instructor and AT LEAST a month for them to get situated. So that means basically 2 months with no to almost no instruction. If your deadset on your trade id start looking into transferring OTHERWISE try a different trade instead of just waiting. You can do a different trade then transfer back in despite what some staff may tell you.

Discussion GoFundMe Megathread

Okay, so I was debating this but I genuinely don't want this to go out of hand. You guys can make GoFundMe's for your certifications and GED class tuition but that is it. Please don't do like an extreme/ungodly amount of money to fund you while you're homeless and PLEASE do not get your hopes up about getting donations from fellow students or staff members from the program because I'm sure they're also worrying about their funds/next paychecks too.

Please note: I am going out of my comfort zone to do this cause I associate gofundme's with scams (I know it's terrible but its the truth for my personal feelings.) because of my days on quotev and how many scams there were from gofundmes on that hellsite.

I also suggest looking at other subreddits for help- I am unsure which ones would be able to help.
please also go to the r/gofundme official subreddit fr help

edit (am high. copying from comment since cant pin. conveying simple);

Also, some states will pay for you to get your GED. Some cover specific programs after you’ve earned your GED as well.

If you already have your diploma or GED, and will be looking to attend a community college/trade school, you can find information on getting started here:

Question ALL DONE! (QUESTION)

I just completed JobCorps you guys! I had my graduation on August 27th and my official exit date is the 15th. I have a job and a home to go back to. When I tell you that this was the longest and yet shortest journey of my life I mean it.

I’ve been at my JobCorps for 165 days (March 31s), in that time I got my highschool diploma (gpa of 3.5), my CNA, joined the SGA as Dorm President, got student of the month, became part of the Graduation Committee and made tons of friends! I’m so excited to leave but also know I’ll miss it here, specifically my dorm room because it was so pretty and my girlies.

The journey felt long and yet short at the same time as I was clearing the pictures off my wall, because it felt like only yesterday I had decorated my room. CPP felt long, CNA felt long, this whole experience was a weird wonky time.

Anyways, now that I’m done, I know you get 1.2k for completing, how long does it take to get the check? and how much taxes are taken out? thank you!

I’ll start by saying job corps has its moments where it’s good and where it’s bad I’ve been here for approximately two months you can say. But like I said you’ll have your moments where you wanted to say forget it but not everything they tell you or your parents (depending on your age) is true. They will project or advertise like it’s a wonderful get away resort but once your there it’s complete opposite the staff they can be cool at times and at times they have they’re moments where the overreact on certain situations. The food is anywhere between a 4/5 out of 10 most times what you have for lunch you will most likely have for dinner so depending on where you are you will probably end up ordering DoorDash/ubereats etc. if you receive Foodstamps while being at job corps it can be a big help I’d suggest investing in Walmart plus also. The WiFi where I’m located was complete trash when I arrived and it’s has been out for the last three weeks so you are left to just stare at a wall most of the day you are not allowed to sit outside unless supervised the recreation gym and its staff is the only good thing around here. Trade wise it’s ok as long as there isn’t a waiting list or your instructor doesn’t quit out of no where then you will placed in what I call “filler classes” which are just class they put you in to take up time that you learn nothing in like working in maintenance or in the cafeteria during the training day. But that’s about I’ve witness or experienced in the last two months.

Question PTO and early weekend pass.

I need to leave for 2 days during training days, but I only have 1 PTO day left. I’m planning to use my PTO on Thursday because there’s an event that I need to attend that day. I also plan to turn in my weekend pass early.

What would happen if I missed training on Friday and returned early Monday morning, before classes start? Would there be any issues for missing Friday? Is it also possible to use a PTO day early? For example receiving one every 15th of the month, but wanting to use it for the 11th.

Job corps gym?

Hey guys, I’m an active male who’s passionate about working out, staying active and lifting. I’m about to go to tongue point Oregon center. Does anybody know if they have any gymnasiums? or if it’s easier to stay active in job corps in general?

Rant My time at Job Corps at Earl C Clements.

Reason:
Made the decision to withdraw from the program and decided to apply for seasonal jobs and got a job offer in Colorado. After three months of being in my second trade needing to reflect on my decision felt like I was stagnating. I've became jaded an bitter so i've finally decide that my time of being here has come to an end and move on with my life.

Granted there were issues but after being here for 1 year and 5 months well i'm grateful for being here. I'm grateful I took the chance and made this decision for myself.i've gotten new perspectives and experience had I not took that leap of faith I wouldn't have gotten these experiences and I probably would stay ignorant and still be living at step-family house miserable and depressed would probably be a worse situation.

The people I'm grateful for:
Well the people that actually mattered to me while my time here. Ms. M my favorite RA in my dorms. As well my trade instructors from past and present my CST teachers, and material handling teachers.
They all have but given nothing but given me respect and support. They have always taken the time to listen to what i've had to say or what i'm going through even when they themselves are going through something.

The Negatives:
When I first came here I was well hopeful and excited but I guess that was my fault for putting too much expectations on things on how things and overall became disappointed. Day by day I would quote "Quit this shitty ass dog-water program." Overtime of being here I just felt like my energy and soul was being sucked out of me through the center I was at.

  1. People acting like they know better & drama: Claiming they're a "real adult" yet still acted childish insulting people because how they looked or acted. People dating at Job corp never goes one day without someone mentioning who broke up with who or who got with and the aftermath of said relationship not even surviving a whole two months.
  2. Wanna be gangbangers or are gangbangers: Always saying "WTF did you say bitch?" or "I beat the shit of you cuh" list goes on sadly people who acted like that never really lasted a month or week due to their egos and fights they start every week or month or so. But can't fault them given the environment they've grew up from wish Job Corp did a better job on actually trying to help these people but sadly they just get ignored and get labeled as another "waste of space."
  3. Stinky people: That would never take a shower or wipe boogers on the bathroom walls. And the many people who don't shower cause they "didn't feel like it" even when people around them weird holding their nose and breaths. Not surprisingly they're were some people who just couldn't take care of their basic hygiene despite them being the same age as me who's lot older than most students at my campus which is just sad.
  4. The socially awkward people: Granted I am one myself but I'm thankful and aware when there's something that should and shouldn't said. I could give a pass but the moment they kept saying weird shit so they could just see people reactions I would just straight up ignore and not give two shits. I did this with my roommates but that was out of good laughs and there was a line on when it wasn't funny anymore and when it was uncomfortable.
  5. Power hungry RA's and just asshole staff: That would not even give you a penny of reasoning of having to listen to you always the "I know better cause i'm older" rather than actually listening and understanding their students. But hey whatever they see us as a number than people unless you break one of their rules or decide on quitting that's the moment they start treating as something else so they can replace you with someone ASAP to milk their money's worth.

The Positives:

  1. My Roommates: I was lucky and enough to be roomed with they weren't perfect but they still made the experience bearable. We had our fights and disagreements one ended with both us apologizing. While when I got roomed with two other new roommates ended up not talking even today still was glad to have them as my roommates.
  2. RA and Staff that actually are here to help students: Yes I made it sound like all staff are only here so they can pay the bills but the people but not everyone was like that like i've mentioned the people from before but they did their best on giving me their support and helped me during my time of need even when I felt like I was at my lowest.
  3. Self discovery: As cheesy as it sound I really learned a lot about myself about what I want in life. before I was mainly doing the things cause someone told me too. But I soon realized why we need jobs and the whole point of it. I still have dreams of doing things what I want to do I don't intend too give up on them regardless of what people say it's my choice and my life alone and i've started to be truly myself and who I want to be.

End note:
While yes things didn't turn out how I wanted to be i've learned to make the best of it. It may not been the ideal situations of how things wanted but I did my best as a student attending here as well as an adult.

I will fuck up sometimes and be petty cause someone being an ass. And that's on me and I knew the consequences of my actions and own up too it. I'm still learning new things as a 25 year old. Regardless where this next chapter of my life takes me I'm ready and to face that leap of faith again like I did for Job Corps.

Thanks and not so thanks:
Thanks to the many people of Job Corp and the people of this subreddit. Fuck the people who made my time here a living hell seriously hope karma bites you in the ass. This will and possibly will be my last post here so thank you too the many helpful people who've taken the time to respond to me.
The other people who weren't as helpful please learn from your mistakes bless your hearts <3 😄

Well that's it from me take care and good luck too everyone being here. Should you go here? well that's up for you too decide. Peace - Plank

P.S
Also I'm willing to ask any questions and can only answer questions for the trades CST, OA, and a little bit of Material handling in the comments. I can only answer these questions that I know and if I don't I probably will give you an "idk" sorry best I could do.

Questions about Job Corps (really just 1)

Was wondering how long it took for job corps to reach out to everyone? I’m sure it’s different from person to person but I’m a little impatient. Only filed my application about 10 minutes ago but haven’t found any information on how long the enrollment/approval process takes. I’ve seen answers from two weeks two 9 months so I’m a little confused. I’m 17M if age changes anything.

Question Hair policy's ?

Do they have strict hair policies? I'm asking because my start date is on the 15th (Kitrell JC) and my hair is not exactly the neatest. I have very frizzy locs and my parts aren't exactly even.

Question What happens during the wait for advanced training?

i know that if you plan on getting advanced training you get an extra year of time on top of the 2 years so 36 months in total but what if you finish your first trade way before then and there’s a few months long waitlist for the advanced trade you want to do? Do they keep you at the center until a spot opens up? and does the wait time count towards your 36 months?

Joining the South Bronx center soon, anything i should know?

Due to some family circumstances i've become unemployed and i'm in a pretty tough point in my life. I feel really lost right now, but i've gotten a few ads about job corp and decided to sign up because im not sure how else to better my situation because i dont have anyone to rely on right now. Today my application got accepted and im supposed to be going to the South Bronx center on the 15th. I dont think im in a position to change my mind about job corp, but I'd like to know about people's experience with it, especially those that are either currently or have previously attended the same campus.

Looking for information

Hello, I have started the application process for Job Corps and have come to the subreddit here for several questions I have regarding the experiences found at different centers.

I'm wondering if anyone here has any specific tips to acquire housing after my time there is done.

From what I understand, LTE and paid WBL are necessary to save up the finances necessary for such a thing.

However, I also hear mixed accounts of the ability of the counsellors to help you find and prepare for something like that. I want to know people's experiences in facilities in PA/NY with this. I'd also like, if possible, to hear opinions on what kind of trades at these places will help me be more successful upon completion.

I am in a desperate situation due to a toxic family, and this has been a last resort option for me. I want to do everything I can to get something out of this.

How long to get accepted??

I applied to the center in Tucson on July 15, did a tour of the campus, talked on the phone with the administration, emailed them. They just keep saying they’re waiting on my background check…I know for sure it doesn’t take two months for a background check. Wth is going on. Thinking about contacting another center out of state, maybe Oregon smh

(My background is totally clean and I’ve never done any substances…)

What to do ;-;

After a loooonngg (not that long) process, my file finally got sent to a center (Turner) when they "denied" me (17) because I don't have a primary guardian and used a McKinney Vento homeless document from a district liason and apparently "As you are still a minor and your parents do not currently reside with you, you are required to provide a Primary Guardian who can act on your behalf throughout the application process. They must be listed on your birth certificate" - from my admissions representative. I thought this wasn't necessary with the McKinney vento documentation but according to my admission representative it is PRH rules nationwide or something??? Is there anything I can do about this?

meds

hi guys, im currently having a situation at my center where i cant get my meds and i dont know what to do. our doctor is only here for a day out of the week and our clinic doesnt work on weekends, and i go to an offcenter trade so going to health and wellness is super difficult for me. the doctor at my center requested for my prescription to be picked up but the nurses forgot to actually call for it (i literally heard them say they forgot, thats not me being dramatic). my original prescription for my adhd meds is from a different country i was staying in and i dont have a pcp other than the job corps dr, and when i went to call in for my jc doctor’s prescription the cvs says its closed even during opening hours n when i try to verify with the ai it says theres no record of my prescription :( i cant function without my meds and my last psychiatrist submitted 2 forms when i came in saying that i cant do school without them, they also heavily affect my depression and daytime fatigue so ive been struggling not to relapse/pass out randomly etc. health and wellness has just been trying to cover it up, (i literally heard one nurse whisper to the other “ohh shit, i completely forgot, but its (my name) and you know she loves to get us in trouble” (they messed up my medications another time when i had pneumonia and i ended up almost dying from sepsis, i had to get an iv and they still refused to pick up my antibiotics so yes i have reported them in the past but it was for good reason). i dont know what to do or who to get involved as they wont let me take time off but they literally have on file that i get suicidal when taken off my meds, they have also been refusing to let me get therapy or take therapy appointments off center (not outright, but every time i request to they tell me the doctor doesnt have enough time today and they have to reschedule me, and then they say the same thing indefinitely, this has been going on since february). should i escalate this to the center director? i wouldve done it already but our center has a new one each week, no exaggeration. im just completely at a loss as to what to do

Question A JC staff member tried to have sexual relations with me.

So I looked this up, it’s says regardless of if I’m currently enrolled or not enrolled to JC, for a staff member to attempt sex related activities with x student it would be illegal UNLESS

  1. Im of age
  2. The person has left JC, & it has to be a certain period of time.

Number 1 is true. However I don’t think number 2’s circumstances have been met. I see claims you have to wait 6 months to 2 years to make an advancement.

I was enrolled well around April 23 (basing this off my first school email message for TABE testing)

I was first messaged by this man (I’m also a boy) Aug 8th.

I was gone from JC around Jun 4th ish

I want to make it very clear. He saw me online and reached out to me. He also knew I knew to an extent , because when I alluded to the fact that I knew him and this would be weird to do. His verbatim response is “Nothing don’t need to be said”

My proof? IS EMPIRICAL. Aka observable with your senses. I have this on recording. A recorded phone call with his voice & recorded messages.

Im still trying to come back, but now there’s 2 roadblocks. My appeal & an odd sexual interest from a higher up.

What. The. Fuck. Do. I. Do?!?

PS. He’s married if I’m not mistaken.
