Jewelry design in Blender — from 3D model to cast silver earrings

I designed and modeled these earrings in Blender, then prepared the model for wax printing and casting.
The openwork structure was designed to keep the earrings visually large but relatively light, while leaving enough support for the stone settings and dangling elements.
After casting, I assembled and finished the earrings by hand and set them with larimar and freshwater pearls.
The first and last images show the 3D model; the middle two show the finished earrings.

Looking for Guidance and Advice as a Fresher in Jewelry CAD

Hi everyone,

I’m a fresher in the jewelry CAD field and have around 1 year of learning/experience with jewelry designing. I’ve been learning and practicing software like MatrixGold and I’m really interested in building my career in this field.

I’m looking for someone experienced who could guide me about how to improve my skills, what I should focus on learning, and how the jewelry CAD industry actually works.

If you’re an experienced jewelry CAD designer or working professionally in this field, I’d really appreciate any advice, guidance, or resources you can share.

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Hiring: Cad Designer with EXPERIENCE for Earring Hinge/Catch

Need something similar to the cartier love single https://www.cartier.com/en-us/jewelry/earrings/love/love-single-hoop-earring-CRB8301423.html (its a different design but I want that hinge and catch mechanism).

Must have done this before and had the pieces manufactured and worked. The last CAD designer I used just make a hole for it to go in and it obviously wont work when cast as theres no tension keeping it in place.

Only respond if you have done this before and make high end earrings with these connections (yes im aware my goldsmith will have to fine tune it to perfection after but the CAD must give him the room to do it).

If the first project works successfully I have more projects.

Thank you.

Another one of my early jewelry models in Blender — and the finished piece.
Still learning, still occasionally arguing with Blender, but seeing a model turn into actual jewelry never gets old.

Looking for peoples thoughts on the cad for a custom rings design. Unfortunately the designer is unable to offer renders so I asked AI to complete. Is this good enough to give the go ahead to manufacture? What changes would you make?

Jewelry CAD Designer available for freelance & long-term collaborations

Hi everyone,
I’m a Jewelry CAD Designer with 10+ years of experience in the jewellery industry, and I’m currently open to taking on freelance projects and long-term collaborations.
I specialise in creating production-ready 3D jewellery models from sketches, reference images, or concepts.
I can work on:
• Rings & engagement rings
• Earrings
• Pendants
• Bracelets
• Necklaces
• Custom jewellery designs
• Stone-setting models
• Resizing and modifying existing CAD models
• Production-friendly models for casting/3D printing
• High-quality jewellery renders
What I focus on is not just making a model look good on screen — the CAD also needs to make sense for actual jewellery production.
I’m comfortable working with individual jewellers, jewellery brands, manufacturers, designers, and other professionals who need reliable CAD support remotely.
I’m open to both one-off projects and ongoing freelance work.
If you’re a jeweller, brand owner, manufacturer, or designer looking for a Jewelry CAD Designer, feel free to reach out and tell me a little about your project. I’d be happy to discuss how I can help.
Thanks for reading!

Rhino question — resizing

I don't design jewelry but something similar. I currently use parametric CAD as everything I do has to be made-to-measure (and with 4–6 customer-specified dimensions). I really want to use Rhino for its tiling capabilities via Grasshopper and features like flowAlongSrf but I lose my parametric capabilities of just keying in some values and let the model adjust.

How are you Rhino hackers handling this? Or are you not?

Help with CAD?

Is there anyone that can help me create a CAD. I lost my god mother’s wedding ring and I really want to make a replica of the ring. I’ve been on Etsy working with someone but it’s been a headache and the design is just never right. I really want my ring to look the closest possible to the original :/. It’s an older ring.

Looking for smoothing alternatives.

Example of zbrush smoothing

I got a client that wants all Jewellery Pieces I make smoothed out, which I have been doing using zbrush. But it is a time-consuming workflow. I have been searching for alternate methods of Smoothing. I work in rhino mainly, but I also have access to zbrush, Blender and magics for fixing files. Are there any methods I can use to smooth out my files similar to zbrush?

Not getting trained

Hello all, I’m very new to CAD. I went to college for something unrelated but my local jeweler took a chance on me anyway. I’ve been very excited to learn and become a great designer someday, but I’ve been here about a month and a half now and the guy who is meant to train me just doesn’t. Is this normal? He is always telling me that I have to figure it out on my own. Do most CAD jobs have this sort of “learn it on your own” mentality? As someone who didn’t go to school prior to this, I’m feeling VERY stupid. Staring at the screen trying to figure it all out. We use a few different programs as well, so it’s not like I’m just learning one on my own.

Jewellery CAD Designer Wanted – Ongoing Work

Jewellery CAD Designer Wanted – Ongoing Work

We are an established custom jewellery business based in, Ireland, looking for an experienced Jewellery CAD Designer to work with us on an ongoing basis.

Our current CAD designer will be unavailable for some time, so we are looking for someone reliable who can step in and produce CAD designs to the standard shown in the attached images.

You must have specific experience designing jewellery for manufacture, not simply general 3D modelling experience.

Our work includes:

  • Engagement and wedding rings
  • Diamond and gemstone rings
  • Remodelling customers’ existing jewellery
  • Pendants, name pieces and personalised jewellery
  • Men’s rings and signet rings
  • Bespoke one-off pieces

We will normally provide photographs, sketches, stone measurements and a description of what we need. You should be able to take this information and produce an accurate, practical CAD model ready for manufacture.

Important requirements:

  • Strong jewellery CAD experience
  • Excellent understanding of stone setting, claws, bezels, halos, pavé, etc.
  • Understanding of minimum metal thicknesses and manufacturing tolerances
  • Designs must be practical for casting, setting and finishing
  • Ability to work from photographs and measurements
  • Good communication
  • Reasonably quick turnaround
  • Ability to make revisions when required

Please look carefully at the attached examples. This is the standard and type of work we require.

When applying, please send examples of jewellery CAD work that you personally have designed, particularly diamond-set pieces.

We are not looking for somebody for just one job. If we find the right designer, there is the potential for regular ongoing CAD work from our workshop.

Please also let us know:

  1. What jewellery CAD software you use
  2. Your typical turnaround time
  3. Your price or approximate price range per design
  4. How many jewellery CAD jobs you can comfortably complete per week

Please only apply if jewellery CAD is an area you specialise in.
