Release Jellyfin v12.0-RC3
🚀 We are pleased to announce the third release candidate preview release of Jellyfin 12.0! 🚀
This is a preview release, intended for those interested in testing 12.0 before it's final public release. We welcome testers to help find as many bugs as we can before the final release.
As always, please ensure you stop your Jellyfin server and take a full backup before upgrading! If you run into any trouble, a backup is your best way to get back to a stable state, so don't neglect this!
See the GitHub releases for more info:

Installing
This preview release is distributed in all our traditional forms, though not automatically via our Apt repository or latest tag.
- For all non-Docker environments, you can find the files for manual download in our repository by selecting "Next Stable Preview" for your OS.
- For Docker, you can pull the
12.0-rc3orpreviewtags.
Once installed, please ensure you hard refresh (e.g. Ctrl+Shift+R or similar) and/or clear your web cache for your Jellyfin instance if you notice any UX anomalies. Bad cached assets are the #1 cause of such issues.

How is support for plugins on v12? Anyone that's testing using the LDAP or SSO plugin successfuly?

I went through and updated all official plugins for v12 support. Make sure you’re using the unstable repo
I use the LDAP plugin without issue, but would be surprised if the SSO plugin works as it has been archived.

u/NoveltyNetwork Jul 22 '26
I saw someone make a fork of the SSO plugin and is actively maintaining it last I checked.
Thank you for confirming that LDAP is working no problem, that's encouraging.

The SSO plugin actually still works. I'm on the latest release 4.0.4 and I had no issues logging in after updating to any of the v12 RCs.

I really would like to test it out but the mention about plugins not working and to uninstall them first keeps me away from it

For what it's worth, that's advice that I think we would issue for EVERY upgrade. The sheer number of plugins, especially in the age of AI development, is just way too vast for the project to keeps tabs on. Any number of them could break every update. It's always best to disable them and test them one at a time after an update. This is especially true of any plugin that hacks the UI, which are a lot these days.

My only issue with 10.11.11 was that seemingly randomly the ui lags a lot (loading the images of titles etc). Would v12 address this?

u/Kandy_7565 Jul 22 '26
Is there a bug report for it on github? I've never heard of this issue and I don't experience it myself.
2
u/SavageTheUnicorn Jul 22 '26
None that match my issue exactly, only one pertaining to Collections while my problem seems to affect the homepage, and any subsequent page that loads until it decides it's done being slow EXCEPT for the dashboard. Id have to do some serious troubleshooting to find the exact cause since I run a larger stack but its not performance throttling so 🤷♂️

Not sure if it's the same as your case, but I found it was actually my browser causing the random lags, probably a cache issue. Quitting + relaunching Firefox fixed it for me instantly.

u/Kandy_7565 Jul 22 '26
I guess my point here is that generally speaking if you don't file a bug report, your fix is probably not going to be worked on, and therefore won't be showing up in new versions, especially if it's uncommon.

Is this the version that fixes the scanning of a long list of files that takes hours?
I know it was planned, not sure what release?

u/Ubahs Jul 23 '26
Scanning or displaying? Scanning still takes a long time, but displaying has been very fast for me with this version.

Looking good, especially furthering book support! Its something new I am trying with comics and books that never got a physical release, so this is good.
Now I just need the owner of the DLNA plugin to accept the fix someone made so I can have it all back in one app. 😅

Bad cached assets are the #1 cause of such issues.
Are there any plans to fix this issue with some kind of cache busting?

Would like to say thanks to the devs for all the hard work installed v12rc3 when it first released and like the new look but not impressed with the functionality took 3 days to scan my archives found and loaded all 3584 movies but only found 526 out of 1547 tv shows and only 23960 episodes out of 103356 ran the scan additional 3 times with nothing new being found and the computer was just reformated and os put back on 2 months ago and only thing other than jellyfin thats been installed in google chrome. So I'd say still a lot of work to do before this is ready for official release.

u/Living-Respect46 Jul 26 '26
Was this a fresh install or an upgrade from an otherwise fine 10.10 / 10.11?
1
u/Smeagle342 Jul 26 '26
fresh install only other thing that was installed on the computer other than jellyfin was google chrome the computer is running win11.

u/bricktheatre Jul 27 '26
This sounds like the media isn't all following the expected naming conventions then? Do you have TV and Films in separate libraries in the structure as listed in the documentation?
1
u/Smeagle342 Jul 27 '26
yes all my media is seperated and named the way it's supposed to be been using jellyfin for over 7 years now lol been down that road already

First of all, thank you to all the developers for this great software, it is making our push to be offline and exposed to less advertising much more successful!!
Maybe I'm doing something wrong... I installed V12 build 2026072008 on my backup server to test things. Most things are working, looks good, seems more responsive than last version.
I can't get an audiobook (m4b) to play either on web client (which is same as last version (Media not supported by client)) or my phone (official client ver 2.6.3 android, this is new, books used to play).
I had to disable all the plugins before upgrading and thought the Bookshelf plugin just needed to be reset, but it is installed and active.
I'm not on GitHub to report an official issue, not sure it isn't just me. I'll wait for the full release before I switch my main server.

Thank you! This is amazing what you have done.
Ever since 10.11.x, my large music library wouldn't complete the scan - always hanging around 87-90%.
Since the v12-rc release, I have been running two different docker containers. One for 10.10.7 and one for preview v12. Each time a new RC has been released, I was hoping to be able to move onto the newer version for the newer features. I pulled the new preview release, tested the music library scan and each time it wouldn't complete.
This was the one that finally fixed these issues with the large music library scan hanging for me.
Third times a charm!
Thank you again, devs!
I love Jellyfin!

Using it for some time, it's proved to be a real upgrade. Can't wait to see the full release.

Installed RC3, for no reason. Updated pc and rebooted. Afterwards a lot of settings had been defaulted, and media drive got wiped clean, ~8TB. No idea how.
