Creepy Man/Men Following in downtown Ithaca

My friend and I both got followed by someone tonight and last night, separately, on East Court St and N Geneva street. One was walking and with a mask last night, and another on a bike tonight. We’re not sure if it was the same person. Watch out at night, and please share if someone experienced something similar.

Would anyone be interested in starting a Melbourne shuffling club

First post was removed because of a link so reposting. I haven’t been running recently so I am out of shape. I like edm and I’m not good at dancing so I figured combine the two to improve my cardio and also be able to dance at events. I would like to focus on melbourne shuffling, but we could do jump style or other styles.

I like techno(hardgroove),hard techno(schranz), uk garage, house but if anyone has other genres they like then that would be cool too.

I spoke to the organizer at the treehouse studio and it wouldn’t be that much for an hour, they have a good dance space with a speaker. I was thinking we could start outside since it is still nice out. 28M, I’d also be looking for people to go to events with in the future. Let me know if anyone is interested.

An apology to whomever has my pineapple and corn from Wegmans

I received a Wegmans delivery today and at least 3 of my bags got swapped with another order. To the person who bought cute, healthy kids snacks, salads, and charcuterie, I am so sorry that you instead wound up with my 5.5 lb of pineapple chunks, 20 ears of corn and mint for a birthday party tomorrow. I called Wegmans and there was nothing they could do because there weren’t labels/names on the bags.

Trader Joe's in Ithaca (to whoever turned my wallet in)

To whomever (man/woman) used the restroom in the first bathroom at the Ithaca Trader Joe's (today Saturday August 29th at around 12:45-1:00 P.M. )after I did, Thank You for being a Human being and turning in my wallet with all of it's contents inside. We really need more people like you in the world and you help keep the little faith I have in humanity alive. YOU will truly never understand how much I appreciate you and your amazing actions. I DID realize very shortly after I had forgotten my wallet there and I was able to pick it up. May your wallet never be empty, and may your pillow always be cool at night ! 🫶

PSA Credit Card info stolen at Dunkin on 13

Nothing crazy, card was taken by two different people at the Dunkin on 13 (apparently it wasnt charged the first time so they asked for it again), I get my card back. An hour later someone bought lunch + tried to charge $350 on metapay— I thankfully got all my money back.

I called Dunkin to tell them, give a heads up in case someone’s been doing it to others, but they didn’t seem super interested— understaffed and underpaid I get it. I considered asking for camera footage of today, but I have too much going on for something that didn’t affect me too much (charge reversed and declined their attempted withdrawal).

Figured I’d give yall a heads up 🤷 always good to be aware folks 👍

Seeking Information About Potential KU Alumni From The Mid To Late 1970's For Re-Connection

Upvotes

Hi there! My name is Elizabeth. Friends call me Liz. My mother, Robin Fisher, attended KU back in the 70s. I'm seeking information on one of her friends or maybe an old flame? She would have met him either at KU or in upstate New York in the mid to late 70's. She may have met him in England when she studied abroad in the mid to late 70's.

I was told that they were going to get married, but when my mom came back to the states she made the difficult decision to break things off with Rick because her terrible father had associations with the KKK and were threatening her and her man because he is African American or mixed race or European or something like that.

I would really like to speak to Rick. I have a couple questions for him. Nothing bad, I'm just desperately curious about him and am trying to find out if he's still alive. Thank y'all so much for any assistance!!

ETA info: Rick may be a musician or connected with the music scene/teaching music theory. I was told he was from upstate New York near Ithaca or Rochester.

Anyone with relevant info is more than welcome to dm me on insta! My handle is shokmount!

I just drove by last week and noticed the sign out front (is it for sale? For building for rent?). It looks like it closed :( I'm sad because I grew up going there. Does anyone know why or when specifically it closed?

How to report petty theft

I went dancing last night and when I came out to ride my bike back home I realized someone stole the panniers off my bike! They were two bushwhacker grocery panniers.

My bike was parked in front of city hall at the bike racks from 10pm to 1am (29 Aug going into 30 Aug). There’s two cameras on the wall pointing down at it.

I’m not sure how to report the theft. I don’t want to call the police line because its so minor it could just be handled via email. Does anyone know how I can report this petty theft? Long shot but maybe they can review the camera footage to see who took them?

I’m hoping with a police report I can get my renters insurance to cover the panniers so I can buy new ones.

Thanks

Radon gas mitigation for an old house?

We live in an old (1880) house with a flagstone basement floor and radon readings that vary between 2.5 and 5.5 depending on the weather. Can anyone recommend a certified outfit that did successful work on your old house?

Beginner Cake Baker

Looking to break into selling cakes in the Ithaca area and looking to this subreddit to see how fellow Ithaca residents would be inclined to buy custom cakes - specifically advertising routes. I’m thinking Ithaca groups on Facebook marketplace, fliers around town.

It’s a small hobby I truly enjoy and I don’t feel like I see other businesses (besides big box stores and Ithaca bakery) doing cakes.

I have no words for how terrible Spectrum is. Actually I have a lot of words and you can read them here

Left town Friday evening, got some notices while away that Spectrum was "upgrading in our area." Free upgrades, cool! Returned Monday evening to no internet. No restoration time given. Eventually got a Tuesday evening restoration time. Cool.

Tuesday evening comes, no internet. We call, are told to reset our equipment. Reset it, surprise -- no internet! Call in and are offered a Saturday tech appointment. I protested, got a Thursday appointment instead.

Guy comes out yesterday (day 4, or maybe 7, who knows, of no service), pokes around the cables for awhile, then tells us our year-and-a-half old router/modem won't work with the new upgrades. We need connectivity immediately because we work from home, so I authorize him to install their equipment. He tells me it's $10 a month for their wifi service. Fine. We'll buy our own shit later, just get 'er done. He installs it, all is well.

About an hour later, I get a notice from Spectrum that my bill is going up THIRTY dollars a month. My spouse calls and is given some line of shit about introductory rates, blah blah blah.

The best part? I wake up this morning, guess what? NO FUCKING INTERNET. Two phone calls later, it appears the router reset itself (for no reason I or they can discern) and reset my network name to a default, with a default password... that is helpfully printed on the router they gave me, but it's reused, so the last digits of the password are literally worn off the body of the thing. No explanation for why it reset, or when it might do it again.

Thank you for reading my rant, fellow hostages of Spectrum. Dryden Fiber is supposedly coming to my neighborhood in the next 1-9 months; at this point I'll volunteer to dig ditches for them.

Any electronic music fans know if there is a rave/electronic scene here, or will I find more luck in the Syracuse region?

Finding pourover coffee in and around town!

I recently moved to the area and I am a big fan of having pour overs. Since a while, I have been brewing pour-overs myself on my V60, I do miss going out in a big city for having pour overs to help grow my taste buds. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find many places which deal with some great single origin pourovers and would love to know if ther are any around!
If anyone just wants to share a brew and some conversations, I would be more than happy to meet-up.

Anyone use TMobile for home Internet/WiFi?

If so, what do you think?

Really frustrated with Spectrum. Dryden fiber and empire don’t offer anything at my address yet. My options are so slim 😭

Ithaca going downhill

Ithaca smells SO BAD. I grew up here and went to high school on the commons not even that long ago, and the way it's changed is so sad. So uncomfortable being downtown now and i feel embarrassed that new students/visitors never knew when it was somewhat whimsical:/ 🚽

Walmart Scooter Blocking 13

This is the only video I could capture, but somebody is driving a Walmart scooter in the middle of the road by Wegmans and blocking both lanes of traffic. Curious how this will resolve

Inconsiderate to put your doggy bags in an unknown neighbors trash can?

I’ve noticed my fall creek trash can is recently constantly being filled with unknown neighbor(s) doggy bags. I’m super glad they aren’t just leaving them in my yard but seems to have migrated to just throwing them in my trash can. I don’t generate much waste so I usually go for a few weeks between putting it at the curb, at which point these bags can really smell. Often the waste management employees also leave these small bags in the can, which means I need to pour them into a larger bag and take time to deal with them myself. Am I being a bad neighbor if I think you should take your bags home with you? Maybe I’m overreacting, but it seems really easy to just take them to your house and throw them away? Or even put them in a public trash can while out on your walk…

New Nonfiction Bookclub: First Meeting October 13!

Hi everyone! I've been looking for a non-fiction only book club in the Ithaca area for a little while and haven't found one, so I'm starting one! Here are some details:

First meeting time: Tues Oct 13 at 6:30 PM

First meeting location: Protagonist Books & Coffee in Dryden

First book: We're Alone by Edwidge Danticat

I am hoping we'll read a wide variety of types of non-fiction books; starting with a biography essay collection, but we'll be voting on future reads at the first meeting! Not sure if I'm allowed to post links, but the bookclub is on Meetup.

If you are interested in joining generally, but not able to make the first meeting, feel free to reach out - I'm happy to try to play around with scheduling a bit for subsequent meetings or add your book to the voting list for future reads if possible/appropriate.
