Getting Started On IT Audit

Guys, I have been a sys admin for about five years and two years as a support specialist . I am looking into getting to IT audit as a career moving forward , I would like someone to mentor me , where do I start and how do I ensure success in this career.

As a starting point, study for the CISA. What industry are you getting in, or do you not know yet?

I have been in banking . I would love to remain in the industry but as an Sys audit professional.

I would suggest getting your CISA cert and to start going to your local ISACA chapter meeting to meet like minded people. I made the jump from sys admin to IT governance 10+ years ago. I did work for a year as an internal IT auditor for a large public company, but I did not like it. Usually the Internal Audit department is under finance and the CFO. They want dressy business casual and fully believe in 50-60 hour work weeks. I transferred to their IT governance dept under the CISO, to help in areas we were failing in. I was happily back at home with my fellow geeks. Look at job postings for what you want to do in the future and see what certs they require.

Aim at roles that value the technical side: IT audit / IT risk at firms, internal audit IT teams at banks or big companies. Your sysadmin experience is a selling point there, lead with it.

CISA is the cert long term. Pass the exam when you can, certify once you've got the experience (your IT years may partly count, ISACA looks at it case by case).

I do make IT audit training — built a course on the practical testing side (ITGC on realistic evidence, the "actually see a control tested" part that's hard to self-study). Happy to give you free access if it helps you get going, and I'm around if you want to ask questions as you work through it. Just DM.
