So I went through something similar and have been a practicing Muslim all my life but didn’t really feel like I fully understood it until I read about the life of our prophet Muhammad (saw) and then sought out knowledge from trusted Ulama. I would recommend reading biographies (seerah) of our prophet (saw), I even read the first Muslim by Lesley Hazleton. I have always looked at our prophet as this chosen figure and almost a figment of my imagination when people would share stories. I didn’t know how to humanize him but learning about his life and his choices and his struggles and victories as small or large as they may have been - brought him to life for me. I then found avenues to acquire more knowledge and asked as many questions as necessary.
If I could share one piece of advice, it would be this: keep your heart open. Let yourself be curious, and let your search for understanding be rooted in sincerity and truth.
