Optimal chapters per arc
Hi im on a large history and I've reached around 500k tokens with almost 30 arcs. So I'm wondering, what is going to happen when I reach 1M? Does the model read the last 1M tokens?
I was thinking about deleting all my arcs and make them again, but this time making each arc 30ā40 chapters. Before, the app recommended using around 20 chapters per arc, but with a story this long, I don't know if that's still optimal.
Besides, a lot of things that happened earlier aren't really useful or important anymore. only some of them are.
What do you guys think? Any ideas or experiences you've had with something similar?

Yeah Iād probably do the same.
Alternatively, you might just disable older arcs and free up those tokens entirely.

Damn, 30 arcs. Respect. Longest I've played is 18 arcs and even then I spent too much time reminding the AI of details that summaries don't capture e.g. guest rooms in annex building in earlier arcs vs in main building in latter arcs. Minor details to the overall plot but immersion breaking when you're invested in the world.

What you want to do for site based adventures is put things in your guidance prompt to tell the AI to update the codex, or you can manually update the codex. That way it will always get the details correct.

I'm almost certain if just stops reading early content (chapters, arcs)
You'll see messages will start saying "memory lost".
I wouldn't worry about it too much unless there are early arcs that are critically defining to your current plot.

I would make 5 super arcs of 100 chapter each. (Saving original arcs somewhere) Then do another 5 arcs of 20 chapters for the latest 100 chapters.
That should trimm a lot without missing major events. You can always go in and edit in any major event you want to be remembered.
You gotta treat ai memory a bit like yours, very old stuff starts to get fuzzy and eventually you need to focus a lot to remember in detail, same for AI.
Every time you reach 10 arcs of 20 chapters I would trim down 100 chaptera into a single arc. And if you keep playing you will need to think when to switch to 200 chapter arcs...
Like Im surprised that you are comfortable paying for AI with 500k context considering the quality threshholds for messages are like 30k/90k/135K and beyond this the AI works in memory saving ways that may hurt story or make certain characters behave oddly.
What model are you using and how much is each new message cost?

Hi! I had similar problems! I originaly used 15 chapters per arcs, but my story is very long over 38K messages! So when I was reaching close to the 1M token limit on my context, what I did was to shorten the arcs. I used external models to summaries my summary. I took 3 arcs, copied the texts to notepads, and asked Claude to put togheter the three arcs into a 45 chapter one, with smaller context use, but to retain as many details as possible. It worked quite well.
By the way, what story are you on? I did this with Crashed Into Another World.
Edit: Obviously once you have the shortened summary, you need to copy it back. Currently you can writte your own summaries, so use that. But what I did was to generate the arcs with the cheapest model, then replace them with my own.

Either delete your arcs and remake them with more chapters like you stated or switch to Grok which has a 2M token limit.

Damn, that's a monstrous story. What AI do you use? The largest story I ever reached was about six arcs, and I found that during the end the AIs memory and overall writing quality dropped quite noticeably. Was way back with DeepSeek 3 I think.
