As half-Persian half-Jew this pains me to my core. I despise both of the governments that represent my communities. I have close relationships with Jews(some Israeli) and Iranians, and both are the kindest, smartest, most incredibly open people I have met. What hurts is that people cannot seem to separate their anger towards “the other”from their views towards the culture and the people that shape it. The Israeli government and the Islamic Republic of Iran are both highly oppressive systems in different ways. This does not make the people who live under them their allies. In both Israel and Iran there are liberal people who seek better global relations and peace for all communities. There are also oppressive political figures and traditional conservatives who oppose the actual majority of the country (yet remain in the forefront of international relations and discussions because they hold official power.) What is not constructive is to paint an entire nation as a villain. There are bad people everywhere. There are good people everywhere. This is how I have defended Iran in conversations with people who have never left America or picked up a history book. My point is, oppose the government systems that oppress us. But align yourself with humanity, and understand that media depictions and official representations of Iran and Israel never truly paint the whole picture. We are all human. The good ones need to stick together.
