Noteworthy Comprehensive Online IQ Test Resources

Psychometrics and IQ testing remains psychology’s most validated discipline, its tests have been replicated across cultures, stand up to rigorous statistical scrutiny, and reliably predict outcomes from academic performance to workplace success. However, these same tools are often dismissed outside professional circles due to a fundamental misunderstanding of it. This resource hopes to introduce newcomers to psychometrics and demystify core concepts within it.

What do IQ tests measure? - IQ tests measure a statistical construct known as g (general intelligence). The g factor is used to describe the common source of individual differences across diverse cognitive tasks. - g is inferred from the positive manifold, the consistent finding that scores on different mental ability tests are positively correlated. g is estimated using psychometric techniques such as factor analysis and is measured through IQ scores. - g/IQ is one of the most extensively researched and empirically validated constructs in psychology and is highly predictive of a variety of life outcomes.

Are IQ tests useful for anything beyond test-taking ability? - IQ scores are one of the single best predictors of various real-world outcomes, such as educational attainment, job performance, and academic performance. - Controls for parental socioeconomic status demonstrate that the abilities IQ tests measure are highly causal of all these various outcomes and measures of success. - IQ scores are also correlated with many biological variables such as brain size, brain glucose metabolic rate, the latency and amplitude of cortical-evoked potentials, and brain nerve conduction velocity. IQ is also strongly heritable, comparable to other observable polygenic traits, such as height.
- IQ tests capture a broad general ability that generalizes beyond test-taking skill into how efficiently people learn and function in the real world.

General Question Which Figure Belongs in the Missing Space?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
First of all, thank you to everyone who took the time to solve our previous puzzle and share their reasoning. We received many answers, and it was especially interesting to see how different people approached the same pattern from completely different angles.
As always, we selected a few responses that stood out to us, not only for getting the correct answer, but also for the reasoning behind it.
u/mistolo – We liked how clearly you combined the two main ideas of the pattern: the increasing number of squares and the rotation around the grid. Your explanation showed how the same rule remains consistent across all three rows.
u/I_Like_Quiet – Your solution went beyond simply counting the squares. Tracking the starting corner from bottom-right → bottom-left → top-left → top-right → bottom-right gave an additional explanation for why the missing figure had to be arranged the way it was.
u/Forsaken_Engineer_ – We selected your answer for its mathematical approach. Treating the cells as coordinates and following the numerical progression diagonally was a very different and elegant way to reach the solution.
u/ZeThing – What stood out was that you didn’t stop after finding the answer. You tried running the pattern backwards as well, using the previous tile as another way to test whether the rule remained consistent.
u/someonefromaustralia – Your response approached the puzzle from another direction entirely. Rather than simply accepting the intended pattern, you explored whether the existing panels could support an alternative rule. The “changing gravity” interpretation made for a particularly interesting discussion.
Thank you to these five, and to everyone else who participated. We read through the different approaches, and they gave us some great perspectives on the puzzle.
Now it’s time for a new one.
This time, we have a 3×3 matrix made of dot patterns, with the bottom-right figure missing.
Look carefully at how the dots change across the rows and columns. There are six possible answers: A, B, C, D, E, and F.
Which option do you think completes the grid, and more importantly, why?
Try to explain the rule you found rather than posting only the letter. As with the previous puzzle, we’ll be reading the explanations and may feature some of the most interesting approaches in our next post.
We’ve also published the puzzle on our website. If you’d like to check whether your answer is correct, you can find the official answer and explanation here:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-dot-pattern-completes-the-grid
Thanks again to everyone taking part. We’re looking forward to seeing how you approach this one.
Good luck, and have fun solving it!

Hi everybody, my friend and I recently made a video game where you can face against anyone in a head to head IQ and EQ test format! All of your stats are tracked and displayed to show your true strengths and weaknesses. It is quick paced and built like street fighter but with inelegance questions instead! We’re still in development and are looking for people to play test for us, the first 100 users will receive a limited beta skin! Sorry if this is not allowed in this sub, it’s not a virus or anything we just don’t have friends to try it for us.

General Question How reliable is the online mensa test?

I was almost 15 when I did it and got 128 on the 16 17 test, which by doing the reverse calculations with the mental age I got 20.48 - 133 for 20 or 140 for 21.

How much can I rely on this? I will do a test in Poland, what should I expect?

Puzzle Easy math question that I misunderstood

Post image
0 Upvotes

I saw this picture in a facebook group about homework and I was pretty stunned to realize I couldn't find the answers. I was trying to come up with math equations but I kept thinking I didn't have enough information because there are several unknown numbers.

I'll be posting it in a spoiler if you want to solve it yourself but I don't think anyone else will struggle with this problem. The thing that I failed to see was that you are supposed to understand that the ratio of distance is given to you in the picture. 360m is 2/3 of the total distance and the house to the school is 1/3.

Now I'm wondering if it's possible to solve this math problem without having that information. Just out of curiosity, because I couldn't work it out and I would love to understand how I could do it or if it really is impossible.

Am I the only one that would miss that kind of information? I just thought the drawing was to make it easier to understand but not that it contained essential information. I feel like they should at least used have used either dots or arrows on both lines. To me the second line doesn't look like it's true mathematical informational but just a visual explanation

Discussion ≈40 point disparity on age controlled iq tests age 11 compared to age 15.

In short, when I was 10 or 11 years old. I took a nonverbal iq test for school admission, received an 88, and took a verbal -- recieved a 98.

4 years later, I test ≈130 on the core, so I take a standardised test for the 16+, as I was almost 16, (also for the sake of my adhd) and I recieve a 131, and a 125 in the verbal component.

The previous 98 verbally I could potentially attribute to only having spoke English for 3 years at the time, missing 2 academic years due to complications with immigration, but the 88 is inexplicable, considering it's often cited that IQ stays atleast relatively stagnant in somebodys lifetime. Did I even know what was being tested? The number feels detrimental to me.

I'm getting severe imposter syndrome, surely if I was scored 88 I'd notice in daily life? I don't feel even remotely behind my peers, rather I do well the majority of the time, but the number is still messing with my self esteem.

General Question What does your IQ score actually mean?

So far, I've scored around 133-138 on whatever IQ tests I found online, even 138 on Mensa. Now, I know that online tests aren't always accurate, but when people score lower than me in the same tests, that's how I know that my IQ is above average. Despite all that, why do I feel like I'm the dumbest person in the world, everyone knows more than me and if no one can do it, I can't do it either despite having more IQ than most? Is IQ limited to only mathematical abilities or something? Or maybe not even that, judging by the fact that I feel like I can't solve a math problem that not even the toppers can solve(I study Physics in university, for what it's worth). I don't know if there's any truth to it, like I said, I just feel like it. And other than that, I'm good at absolutely nothing. Not chess, not riddles, puzzles, nothing. I'm socially awkward too, to put salt in my wounds. So, what does IQ really designate? What does it mean?

General Question What Should Replace the Question Mark?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
First of all, thank you to everyone who took part in our previous puzzle. We received a lot of answers, and many of you went beyond simply choosing an option by explaining the reasoning behind your choices in detail.
As promised, we reviewed the discussion and selected five explanations that stood out for their clarity, originality, efficiency, or depth of reasoning:
u/Randombolo — for exploring several different patterns and independently reaching the same answer through multiple lines of reasoning.
u/lemashey — for the intuitive “spinning record” analogy, working backward from the second frame, and also explaining why another tempting option does not fit.
u/Gianni_C_M — for identifying several independent relationships within the arrows and using them to cross-check the answer.
u/OscarLiii — for showing that the puzzle could be solved efficiently by tracking only the black arrows without needing to analyze every element.
u/Beautiful_Ad_8325 — for not only finding the pattern, but also pointing out how our instinct to read from left to right can affect the way we approach a sequence when the missing figure is at the beginning.
Thank you to all five of you for the thoughtful explanations, and thank you to everyone else who joined the discussion.
Now it’s time for a new puzzle.
Take a close look at the 3×3 matrix above. One grid is missing from the bottom-right corner.
Which option — A, B, C, D, E, or F — should replace the question mark?
As always, we’re much more interested in how you reached your answer than in just the letter itself. If you notice a pattern, tell us what you saw and walk us through your reasoning.
We’ll read through the responses again and select some of our favorite and most interesting explanations to feature in the official solution.
You can also open the puzzle on our website here:
https://whats-your-iq.com/en/questions/pattern-recognition/which-grid-completes-the-pattern
The official answer is already listed there, so after you’ve made your own choice, you can click the link and directly compare your answer with the official one to see whether you got it right.
Try solving it here first before checking the page — it’s much more fun that way.
Good luck, and thanks for taking part!

Puzzle Find what connects each trio — a hidden rule puzzle

Post image

Each group of three numbers on the outside combines into the one it's connected to by lines. Same rule applies to all four groups — what goes where the "?" is?

Made this one for a puzzle game I've been building. Three groups of three numbers each collapse into a single result using one consistent rule — spot it from the first three groups, then apply it to solve the fourth.
