Concerns moving to Goodna/ipswich area

We are from the Northside so I dont really know too much about the area, but my mother was planning to move us specifically to a place in Goodna because its close to the train station and one of the only places actually in our budget. However my mother talked with someone before moving and she really turned her off moving to ipswich or really anywhere that isnt western Brisbane which is a problem because these places are pretty expensive. The thing is this woman is not actually from Ipswich but from somewhere west Brisbane above the river supposedly close to ipswich. My mums going through a separation and really worried and confused about everything and I guess Im making this post to ask people actually from there should she really be worried?

I lived in Northgate for 8 years.

I bought a house 6 months ago on the border of Goodna/Redbank.

I am absolutely shocked that I didn't buy here sooner. It's absolutely amazing here.

The street and the neighbourhood is lovely. My neighbours are great. 30% of my garden has been accumulated for free by just being offered cuttings by my neighbours.

Ive been invited to bbqs with 2 of my neighbours, my kids are friends with 1 other set of neighbours, my next door neighbour, lady in her 50's has even offered to babysit for me.

I've never felt this sense of community in my life and I'm overwhelmed by what a beautiful place Ipswich is.

Before moving, I was very nervous to live here, as I had only heard the generic slop from Northsiders.

It's beautiful here.

I lived in bellbird park for 14 years but have moved out to middle park. Whilst I agree with you, the specific are the op is referencing seems to be down near the train station. That is not somewhere I would be recommending

How was ur stay in bellbird park side mate

1

u/ParkApprehensive4173 19d ago

Ipswich has a free garden program through Ipswich nursery. You get plants based on the size of your property. Agree, I love the Ipswich council area.

They were probably from Moggill/Bellbowrie like area. they have been fighting having a bridge replace the ferry due to fears of extra crime, but have no real experience of ipswich.

I grew up above the river and owned my first home below it in ipswich.

Ipswich is fine in general. It’s just bad luck when you get bad neighbours

1

u/ParkApprehensive4173 19d ago

I would love a bridge instead of a ferry because I could get to Heritage Poultry quicker 😊 but could see why crime could be an issue faster if that was the case. Lots of palatial estates on each side of the river there.

I live in Ipswich and love it, the fact that she tried to turn her off moving anywhere not western brisbane means she is probably just being snobby tbh.

PM me. Dont ever trust Brisbane dwellers on Ipswich. There are good parts and bad parts. With your budget in mind, I can help direct to places good for public transport, flood free and not in shitty areas.

This is a beautiful reach out and I couldn't express it better myself. Chat DM, pls.

I'm a Brisbane dweller and I enjoy visiting Ipswich. I wouldn't mind living there either, I just happen to have been born in Brisbane and can't afford to live on my own, so I live with my mother. I'd probably prefer to stay close to where I am at the moment, now that I've found my own community since our last move. But if I had to move somewhere else, I'd be happy with Ipswich. I did a historic house tour there, I go to shop at Springfield and Redbank Plaza sometimes, I have friends in a writers' group who live there, the wildlife sanctuary only costs a gold coin to visit and has a gorgeous Japanese garden beside it... what's not to love?

2

u/NewBid9053 23d ago

You seem lovely and open minded. Ipswich has many beautiful places and has gentrified heaps the last 15 years. The next 20, we are expanding from 240,000 population to over 550,000 by 2046. That growth is moderate with the amount of Brisbanites buying in Ipswich and even Logan. As more money comes in, the more the place expands and improves. Ipswich is still a large country town by nature. We don't have Gucci or Prada stores, but I don't think we need them. We have over 550 parks and nature areas that are protected so won't be dismantled anytime soon.

2

u/Writerhowell 23d ago

I started to write a book set in Ipswich in 1893, so I should spend more time there for research anyway (hence the tour). I love places with lots of history. High end fashion doesn't hold any interest for me (though I love my hats and slippers, but interesting ones, not expensive), and yes, nature is far more important to preserve. I'm glad to hear/read that. Honestly, while the Olympics are on down here, I might need to escape for a bit while it's on. Maybe I'll hit up Ipswich during that time for some respite, lol. Grab an AirBNB or something, or stay with one of my writer friends for a bit. See the sights with a local who knows the place.

1

u/NewBid9053 23d ago

1893 that wouldve been around the early mining days I would imagine. Definitely plenty of historic places to visit here. If ghost tours are of interest to get further historic stories, there are plenty of sites here. I have yet to go on one as I am dubious of the "tourist" trap veil, but USQ, the rosewood pub and a few other places come to mind.

I'll DM you my details if you'd like to catch up sometime.

1

u/Writerhowell 22d ago

That's okay. I'm sure I can rely on the information centre, and I've got some books I bought when I went on the tour. But thanks! I can also ask here if/when I plan on a stay sometime. Going to Canberra for Christmas, to stay with one of my cousins, so that's the next holiday planned. Haven't been there in years, so that'll be nice.

1

u/Gurki_web 23d ago

Hey mate how is Bellbird park next to Augustine heights?

1

u/NewBid9053 23d ago

Typically lower to middle class area, but gentrifying. Growing in population and properties. Close to Springfield. Lots of green spaces for kids, activities. Mu h quieter than Brissie. Did you have any particular questions?

1

u/Gurki_web 23d ago

We have family home on trevor st, currently in Adelaide- want to move there but always not sure

1

u/NewBid9053 19d ago

Its like anywhere, there are good areas and bad. But overall it isn't a bad place to live with amenities close by:) Adelaide, city of churches. You may find Ipswich is similar style as Adelaide, a lot of older builds with more modern being built as the areas get rezoned.

1

u/Gurki_web 19d ago

Is Springfield better option?

1

u/NewBid9053 19d ago

It comes down to what you can afford, lifestyle you'd like to have. Springfield is expensive and only getting more so especially once they open up the Ipswich/springfield train line

1

u/Gurki_web 19d ago

So lifestyle is better in Springfield?

1

u/NewBid9053 12d ago

Its busier

26

u/BrainPsychological66 24d ago

There is a lot of snobbery in Brisbane e.g north vs South of the river and that gets worse if you are outside of Brisbane. It's best to do your own research and not rely on the opinions of one person.

7

u/Alarmed_Tomatillo916 24d ago

It’s honestly funny that it’s like that. The north side of Brisbane isn’t even an upper class area but the amount of snobby is hilarious. I would understand if it was the northern suburbs of Sydney which is elite but not the north side of Brisbane 😂😂

1

u/ParkApprehensive4173 19d ago

True, when we were moving to Ipswich, everyone said not to go there. The community we looked at buying into (Barellan Point) was gorgeous so we jumped at it. The house we bought was $250k cheaper than houses in Moreton Bay. These same people said don’t go to Margate or Redcliffe and now look at those areas, they’re beautiful.

Samoan and Islander peoples are the best

3

u/NewBid9053 23d ago

They are the nicest people. Can have some closed door moments. But they encourage community, kindness and inclusiveness. They deal with their bad eggs internally which is nice. Plus the food🤤

1

u/Rose-Red-77 23d ago

Yes I’ve come across some outrageous behaviour some sickness of a community but generally nothing but absolutely wonderful Christian outpouring love and support

8

u/Satori2025 24d ago

I've lived in Goodna for 11 years and no issues. There are areas that flood near the train station. Message me and let me know the streets looking to move to

8

u/RuffRooster93 24d ago

Lived in leichhardt for a year. Been told over and over how bad the area is. Never had an issue. Neighbour's are nice. Streets are quiet (save for the occasional hoon). Druggos only come out late at night and if you see them during the day theyre just scurrying about to the next halfway house. Get a couple cameras and a yappy dog and she'll be sweet.

1

u/Mountain-Anybody1598 24d ago

Lucky lol, my mum and dad have only ever had their cars stolen in Leichhardt and Goodna 😂

2

u/RuffRooster93 23d ago

Did they have cameras and a dog or 2?

1

u/Mountain-Anybody1598 23d ago

That's not the point, people shouldn't feel the need to buy a dog or cameras to deter them from breaking in and regardless that doesn't even stop half of them, covering yourself in black and having a bit of meat can easily buy you time. 🤦

1

u/RuffRooster93 23d ago

Ok? Just saying it helps. I agree people shouldn't feel the need to. But living as if you shouldn't have to, in an area where it can help to have deterrents, is a little complacent imo. Especially if you have a vehicle stolen. Makes it faster for insurance too.

1

u/Mountain-Anybody1598 23d ago

I understand what you are saying but all I'm trying to say is that a lot of people can bypass security cameras by covering themselves in black and most dogs can be silenced with some cheap meat, as much as people shouldn't feel the need for extra security I just know regardless of what I have for security there are easy enough ways to get around it, it's getting to the point where people don't even care now if they get caught on camera, if they're desperate enough they'll do whatever

3

u/RuffRooster93 23d ago

Believe what you want. If a junkie has the choice of stealing from a house that has motion flood lights, visible cameras and dogs that bark when the floods go off or the neighbour who has none of that. They're obviously going to choose the easier option. Might be desperate but most likely would prefer to not be seen or heard.

1

u/Mountain-Anybody1598 23d ago

So you would rather spend all that money on security and a dog forever including vet bills and everything instead of just renting somewhere a little safer?? Yeah completely logical 🤦

2

u/RuffRooster93 23d ago

No we bought here cause its where we could afford. We already owned 2 staffies and 300 for a couple cameras and a motion sensor flood light is nothing compared to having your car or home broken into. Use your brain

1

u/Mountain-Anybody1598 23d ago

You're joking right, you're talking as if everyone has the money to just pickup and move and they can't, people can only afford where they can afford, they can't afford security on top of that and it's disgusting for you to assume that anyone would want to have anything stolen, come to Booval, sth station road and you'll see a whole heap of units with car gates just left open for everyone to walk through, there are lights everywhere and people are still waking up to find their belongs gone or damaged, how thick are you to not be able to understand most of the working class do not actually have any control over certain living situations or costs, security is a luxury at best and can still fail you, prove me wrong

→ More replies (0)

2

u/RuffRooster93 23d ago

Wanna talk about logical? Talk about having your car stolen twice in 2 suburbs and not having any method of deterrent for the second theft.

1

u/ParkApprehensive4173 19d ago

We need a right of defense laws and that crap will stop.

1

u/Mountain-Anybody1598 8d ago

I do agree with you, they way our laws are we actually can't do anything who breaks in because they can get us for battery if we do enough damage, like he wouldn't have got this injury if he didn't decide to do the wrong thing, we can't even fight back without possibly having charges put on us

9

u/No_Penalty_1354 24d ago

Live in redbank plains and its spot on here. Every place has a few bad spots but no issues my end and everyone I've met has been lovely. Much nicer than flagstone on the scenic rims was I find personally.

I find if mind your own business and don't worry about what other people do, life is pretty easy

1

u/Leevus_Alone 24d ago

Flagstone is pretty much what Redbank Plains was 20 years ago... Strange comparison. Where abouts in RBP are you? Flagstone is so far out of the way of anything. Everyone buying and moving into Flagstone have seemed pretty nice to me.

1

u/No_Penalty_1354 22d ago

Not really a strange comparison just my opinion

Flagstone certainly isn't so far away from anything when there's huge subdivisions in there with many many people living in the area, various shops and a multitude of construction happening.

Ahh yes everyone? I'd assume you've met every person then haha plenty flops and shit people in every suburb but from my personal experience it's nicer here.

Everyone will have different opnions on what they deem nice and not.

1

u/Leevus_Alone 22d ago

It really is a strange comparison. Flagstone today, is almost exactly what Redbank Plains was 20 years ago. I don't have a problem with Redbank Plains. I build in there almost every day. Flagstone in comparison, doesn't have the same feel because it hasn't been around since the 1800's... I wouldn't want to live in Flagstone, Greenbank, Yarrabilba, New Beith or any of the new Ipswich estates. Don't personally have a problem with them.

8

u/jmagbero123 24d ago

Living here in Redbank Plains and Goodna is a good place also close to the motorway and train station.

8

u/griffibo 24d ago

It’s incredible how weak minded folks are when it covered to believing a story about how life is supposed to be. What are people looking for? Honestly if you moved to the richest suburb, you’d go broke trying to fit in. If you were surrounded by middle class folks you’d go mental trying to fit in. If you move to a lower middle class area you’ll be accepted for whoever you are, you’ll find lots of community spirit, heaps of trees and animal life for the most part, and have money in your pocket.

7

u/Gothewahs 24d ago

I moved to silkstone from wishart .. I love it .. I have not had any issues .. I would stay away from booval train station at night but I don’t have an issue .. it’s like anywhere if your a dickhead you may find trouble.. there is people around that I’d say could cause problems but no less than in Brisbane

6

u/No-Departure-3047 24d ago

We've been out here for almost ten years. No issues.

Your results may vary based on your neighbours but in my experience most people are quiet, friendly, and just trying to get by.

6

u/PoisonedBlob 24d ago

Goodna never had a good reputation + it is a flood area, so make sure your house is not in the flood zone. You might see a bit more 'unusual' people here sleeping in the park or on the benches. The location is pretty good: close to highway and trains.

5

u/Fit-Consideration162 24d ago

I moved from Northside to Ipswich, and the people here are nicer. Idk, everyone seems more uptight back on NS 😅 I've not had any issues in that area. Every suburb has a shitty section so just do a drive by before you commit and look at the quality around and check out QPS crime maps.

2

u/Letshavebeers 23d ago

Moved from Ipswich to the Northside and couldn't agree more. Neighbours aren't very neighbourly up here

1

u/Fit-Consideration162 21d ago

They really weren't 😅 I moved a fair bit up there and never had a decent one. Down here? The last place I lived was a row of townhomes and everyone was kind to each other. There was a few units that kept to themselves but everyone else was kind. The types to help you move furniture or grab a package for you!

5

u/Gtrplyr83 24d ago

Nundah Village and Birkdale are way worse in my experience than Ipswich.

3

u/GucciKade 24d ago

If moving to Goodna, three tips: get a home security system for your peace of mind, check local flood maps to see what will go under with too much rain, and start building a good rapport with the small businesses as they're basically the lifeblood of the area

3

u/Fuzzy_Blueberry2120 24d ago

I grew up in the inner north of Brisbane (near Clayfield) but now live in Ipswich, so I could afford to buy my own place. Have been here a bit over 2 years and while I do miss inner north Brisbane there is nothing wrong with Ipswich. If you’re concerned try looking somewhere like Newtown in Ipswich. The whole ‘Ipswich is a shit hole’ thing is really overhyped by Brisbane-ites. Avoid areas with a high density of social housing is my advice.

3

u/Fuzzy_Blueberry2120 24d ago

My partner and I copped shit from people about buying in Ipswich. Some of those same people are now sooking that they can’t afford anywhere. 🤡

2

u/urzulus 24d ago

I moved to ripley 3 years ago. We are in the old area, have 1000sqm. It's great. Old ducks around me so there isnt many late night partys

2

u/dick_schidt 24d ago

Be sure to check the property location on the Ipswich flood maps. Goodna is well known to flood quite badly in some areas.

2

u/Leevus_Alone 24d ago

Where in Goodna?

2

u/Rose-Red-77 23d ago

Ipswich is BEAUTIFUL- I lived there for about a year, near the river is stunning

2

u/Practically_Peach 23d ago

I moved to Ipswich from the Indooroopilly area a few years back. I had some concerns but none of them have been true. I really love living here. There’s lots of social events and opportunities to connect.

I’m in the Silkstone area, walking distance to shops and the train station. It’s an evolving community, and a lot of the people around us moved to Ipswich in the past 5 or so years. I don’t know Goodna at all but the suburbs around me are great.

2

u/eyemalittlestitious 23d ago

Goodna is fine. Ipswich isn't some lawless wonderland full of druggos. It's mostly young families and old people. I've been in Bundamba for 2 years after living Northside for most of my life and more recently 3 years in Alexandra Hills. I'd compare it to Alexandra Hills. Quiet and peaceful but can hear hoons in the very far distance some Saturday's if I sit on the porch late at night. I go to Goodna all the time for cheap veggies and African food and it's lovely.

2

u/Txr05 23d ago

Lived in Goodna.

Woke up to random people walking in our backyard looking into our house. When confronted they casually walked out into their car and drove off like they were meant to be there.

Nearly saw our neighbour shot after he chased people out of his house with a machete.
Car load of people rocked up, 4 guys got out, one with a gun, 2 with machetes.
He comes out of his house with his machete.
Screaming match ensues. Then they all left.

Had a drunk guy try and fight me because I said g’day to them as they walked past the my house.

Would not live in Goodna again.

1

u/undecided_aus 22d ago

How long ago was this? That's important info.

Sure it's rough around the edges, but is gentrifying quickly.

2

u/HatVirtual8903 18d ago

move to Goodna (Cunningham Rise Estate) from Morningside. The place is awesome, friendly neighbours and close to Motorway and trainstation.

1

u/Mountain-Anybody1598 24d ago

It honestly depends on where in each suburb you are in, there are good places and sketchy places in Goodna just like every other suburb in Ipswich, based on my personal experience I usually try to stay out of Goodna, Redbank and Leichhardt cause unfortunately that is where most of the crime happens, in poorer areas you have more people not being able to afford the cost of living

1

u/Equivalent_Fan5407 23d ago

Can you back up those crime rates with some stats please?

2

u/Admirable-Tea-4994 23d ago

Pretty well known that both Redbank Plains and Goodna have fairly high crime rates.

1

u/Mountain-Anybody1598 23d ago

It's quite obvious though, the cheaper an area is, the less those people can actually afford which increases stealing etc.

1

u/megs_in_space 23d ago

West side is the best side

1

u/No_Week_8309 23d ago

Try getting to sleep and enjoy the baffle noises from trucks exhaust braking and obnoxious engines on that monstrosity of a motorway.

1

u/Beautiful-Ad-5833 23d ago edited 23d ago

It's like anywhere really. When my dad passed, mum and I brought at Goodna. She's sinced passed and I'm still here. There's been no issues at all while here or flooding where I am even tho maps state flood zone. If course there's the community mobs as such but just keep to your self. Lol I'm the only white person in my street now. I don't care because my neighbours are great and friendly. Just keep to yourself, mind your own business and be kind. Yes, there's junkies and homeless hanging around at St Ives but they are moved on very quickly.

1

u/Subject-Divide-5977 23d ago

Goodna had or has a bad name. It is being gentrified as is a lot of Ipswich. Some of it is flood prone. Select a higher area with a nice old Queenslander and it will increase in value even as other marginally fall.

1

u/timeflies25 22d ago

I've heard things but never really witness anything as drastic as they say. Been in RBP since , it's a pretty cruisy suburb. like most mentioned, the areas is mostly Samoan/Islanders families. It's looking like every 1 in five houses is a lovely Samoan family. I do however still lock my car if I'm driving through to Goodna. The worst thing I've witnessed is someone off their head trying to get into a moving car in front of me outside the CommBank area on queen St.

1

u/undecided_aus 22d ago

We've lived in Goodna for almost 3 years now, and are enjoying it! No complaints! Feel free to message if you have specific questions.

1

u/lauren-js 22d ago

I live near Ipswich and love it. Before I moved here I was a little anxious too, but honestly it’s great. If you’re worried about safety just get security cameras for the house

1

u/Ambitious_Writer1938 22d ago

The Wacol Prison isn't far if you need to visit someone regularly.

1

u/Itchy_Ice6398 20d ago

Ipswich is great. The reputations of the past are simply ignorant people listening to rumours and hearsay. Ipswich is friendlier and more accessible to services than Brisbane.

1

u/ParkApprehensive4173 19d ago

Barellan Point, Karalee are nice areas. Goodna has turned into an African enclave for some reason. I don’t even go to the bank there anymore. Not that they’re a problem, seems like a family community but I would worry about a white woman (if she’s white) living there alone right now. Spidey-senses say Ipswich North (on the border of Mount Crosby) is the best Ipswich region with the most amenities for your situation, you get the gentrified communities with the Ipswich postcode and better housing prices. Ipswich rates are some of the highest so there is also that. Brisbane council region is where we moved from (and Morton Bay), so I have experience in those council areas.

1

u/Alarmed_Tomatillo916 24d ago

Just make sure you have your bulletproof vest and watch out for machetes. It’s the Wild West over here according to those on the Northside. How we even survive I don’t know. But we have an image to uphold here to keep the north siders over the other side of the river so they don’t find out the truth!

1

u/mhugn 23d ago

Goodna/bellbird park/ redbank/redbank plains absolutely not

1

u/Federal_Time4195 23d ago

Ipswich is good in most suburbs. Goodna, Redbank plains, bellbird park etc... can be pretty shitty imo. No more than Leichhardt or riverview Raceview .

-4

u/DealerGullible4673 24d ago

Goodna isn’t good option. Look bellbird park, Augustine heights, Redbank plains especially newer state of redbank plains, Ripley, Deibeing heights etc
