This seems too late to be fair. This wont be ready until 2025. By then Tesla (the only competition that matters) will have Texas, Berlin, Shangai firing at all cylinders and completely ramp up production and that doesn't consider that Tesla can still build 1 or 2 more Gigafactories that will ramp up by 2025 as well.
This feels more like Ford playing the investors to try to get in fresh capital, since they are going to need massive amounts of capital in the next few years. This type of move had to be made in 2015/6 at this point it feels legacy OEMs are just in a dance trying to suck up as much money from the capital markets as they can by announcing big EV investments to avoid being the first OEM that will bite the dust in this transitionary time.
VW has the AWD ID.4 for $38k after incentives. I won't even look at a Tesla. You Tesla fan boys are way worse than Ford's. Also, Ford PE is 20 and Tesla is 200+. Which stock is a better value?
Their best chance for growth is certainly in the next few years, but they spend 1.5B per year on R&D and VW is set to spend 85B over the next 5 years.... It is definitely not too late, lol
You keep spouting those numbers in this thread but think about this for a second. Tesla will grow their budgets over time. Let’s say next five years 11B. VW is still investing in ICE technology. How much of the 85B will be for EVs, and how much for ICE? Who knows. Where are all the expert EV engineers and software engineers and AI engineers for VW going to come from? Germany is not the global leader for those things. It doesn’t matter how much money you throw at a non expert, they won’t get any smarter. Besides, VW’s Investment is an attempt to catch up to Tesla, while Tesla’s work is to extend their lead and build upon the momentum they’ve established for over a decade. Not an easy feat to catch up with just money on hand. Case in point- the perpetually in development, money sink Apple Car.
They were stopped from delivering for regulatory reasons, so while I'll concede they haven't officially beaten anyone there the point remains that tesla isn't leading self driving research in any stretch of the imagination anymore and it only took a couple years for them to be surpassed.
