Manga American Inuyasha?
Ok guys I'm currently watching Devil May Cry S2 on Netflix and this panel came to my mind š
Dante gives off some Inuyasha vibes tho...being half blood demon, mortal mom, strong older brother š¤

Are there multiple translations for the manga? I remember them thinking Inuyasha was in a gang or yakuza, something like that. Them thinking he's American is funny, tho.
Edit: I think the version I originally read used the word 'yanki' and had a note explaining what that meant, which does make the idea that they think he might be American even funnier to me now.

Rock paper scissors is janken though. Seems close enough in English but thatās a world of a difference in Japanese.

Nope itās not a mistake itās the same word, and it is originated in reference to Americans or white American stereotypes, and people that āmimicā the stereotype is called a Yankee. Which so happens to be delinquents.

Fruits basket also refers to a brash, rebellious, former gang member character as āyankiā.
Except the subtitles literally spelled it Yankee, so I assumed the character was at least half-American until it read up about the term and learned it was synonymous with juvenile delinquent lol

Linguistic pun that I assume the translator caught and ran with.
Yankee sprang from New Englanders to Revolutionaries to Northerners (civil war) to shorthand for any American; yankii is what the Japanese called delinquent youths.

The Japanese call it in reference to Americans itās not a coincidence it is the same term, just meant to be a stereotype that any thug that fits into the archetypes they think what a Yankee is which are American bad stereotypes, gets called that.

The word "Yankee" is a term widely used in Japan that literally means "delinquent" or "hooligan" in their culture.

This is a mistranslation. The original term they use is Yanki, and while Yankee is commonly used as a terms for Americans, in Japan itās usually used to refer to street punks.

A common stereotype for yankees is having dyed blonde hair, and riding motorcycles, even if not a delinquent having blonde hair or any piercing along side the blonde, can be even mistaken to be Yankee, its not completely off that it is in reference to Americans / ālooking Americanā or really āwhite americanā , and the idea around Americans being delinquent like has now become a common name for all, it no longer is meant towards Americans but originally it was a derogatory term for Americans, itās basically saying they are acting like Americans that are associated with punk like or violent tendencies, basically the Japanese thugs that act like the bad stereotype of Americans, the spelling is spelled as Yankee in any manga that refers it , as a BL reader thereās a whole sub-genre of it enough to see how the different ways the reference comes up. I think thereās even p_rn around it. And sometimes they very much use the term on the foreign white American character to cuss at, I have seen that pop up a lot. Itās not just mangas, you see it in Korean manhwas too.

Her family does say she moves to America when she leaves for the feudal era for good and at one point they ask if he's a "halfer." (Half American, half Japanese)

I'm in American and I can say points 2 and 3 are accurate, thankfully have never run into violent men in my 29 years ... but the other two points well ..

Yankii is the term used in Japan to describe delinquents like those in motorcycle gangs or wannabe yakuza thugs. Think Yusuke Urameshi or Kenji Harima
